Section 2: Providing Evidence you have the Skills

COMMUNICATION

Communication may be formal or informal, personal or impersonal, creative or factual. Messages may be delivered
verbally, in writing or non-verbally. There are many areas where examples of each communication approach may have been
successfully applied, at university, at work, at home, etc
Written - Ability to express self well in writing

I have done this in college as written communication can be writing an essay or report at school or an opening letter when
applying for a job. Another way I have used written communication is through writing a letter. Emails are also another way
of written communication. Written communication is also used when writing a personal statement, which is used when
applying for university.
Verbal:
Informal – ability to network easily with other people

Informal communication is when an individual speaks to their friends or when they want to make friends. People may
also speak informally to their work colleagues. I do this when talking to friends or family.

Formal –
I speak formally to college tutors and also when I have been for an Interview at a job.
Non-verbal:

Listening is one of the main skills that is needed in any job or at college. This is because if a person is an employee of a
business they will have to listen and follow orders and if not they could lose their jobs. I have used listening skills as
they are needed in college because if you do not listen in college you will not know what to do when it comes to
assignments.
Body Language – ability to match body language appropriately to what is being said verbally
Body language is very important when working for example if your job involves speaking to people you will have to be
professional for example in a meeting keeping eye contact whilst being spoken to and also in presentations. This is being
able to match your body language appropriately to how you speak.

WORKING WITH OTHERS


Working with others is a skill highly valued by employers. Suitable evidence for this skill need not be limited to work
experience. You should think of all aspects of your work, studies and social life.

Cooperation - Ability to collaborate effectively within a team


I am able to cooperate with people and have done this when doing teamwork activities in the centre of excellence and
also when I used to work with a group of waiters.

Negotiation - Ability to reach a mutually satisfactory outcome through compromise

I have done this when buying a car I had to negotiate with the seller to lower the price so I could get it cheaper and save
some money. I have also negotiated with people when playing football if they have fouled any of the other teams
players.

Sensitivity- Ability to respond appropriately to individual differences, e.g., age, gender, etc.

I have the ability to respond appropriately to different types of people and have done this when I have done this at work
experience as it is in a community centre where different types of people come in for advice and help. i have also done
this at work when dealing with customers complaints.

Leadership - Ability to encourage and motivate others

I have developed leaderships skills at work where my manager has left me incharge to watch over the other waiters and
ensure that they are doing the work and not messing about and i have had to give them jobs to do. i am also the captain of
my cricket team and I tell people what to do and make sure that we strive to win.

I am able to use a calculator or a PC to make calculations and I have been doing this since I was 6 years old from primary
school all through high school and now also in college in core maths. I am also able to find percentages and standard
deviation through a calculator and I am able to find the mean.

Application -Ability to organize and present numerical data in an appropriate manner

I have a high level of numeric and mathematical ability and I am able to demonstrate this skill and I have a GCSE in maths
and I have worked with money at my workplace.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

File Management Techniques - Ability to create, store and retrieve files

I have done this in college and in upper school I am able to save files to desktop and also to the computer and I am able to
print files out. I am able to get to my work easily through google drive and I know how to use it.
Word Processing - Ability to use a word processing package to produce a variety of formats of documents

I have made myself a CV and also have made posters and leaflets for my college work and in my work placement I was
asked to make leaflets. i am able to use excel and I have a qualification called ECDL to support this.

Spreadsheets - Ability to use a spreadsheet to record and manipulate different sets of data

I am able to use spreadsheet and I have used this when doing my assignments. I have a qualification called ECDL which
shows that I am able to use spreadsheet.

Databases - Ability to retrieve information from a database/ Ability to create a database


I can retrieve information from a database that I need and also I am able to create a database and report and I have done
this when doing college assignments and also assignments in school.

Presentations - Ability to create and display a PowerPoint presentation

I have the ability to use powerpoint and I have used powerpoint when doing a presentation in college and I am able to
create a range of different powerpoints for different images from powerpoints with graphics and moving images to
normal boring powerpoints and i have an ECDL qualification to show this.

Information and Communication - Ability to send and receive email

I am able to use email and I have received emails on my phone and also on computer I get regular emails from college
and also have a windows based email which is Outlook. i have used email to send my cv to employers and also received
emails from employers and I have used Gmail to send my coursework to my tutors

Ability to use an internet browser e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape, AOL


● I have used the internet and I do use it regularly. I am able to use the internet to look for information for my coursework.
I also use the internet to go on to news websites such as bbc news and dailymail.

Ability to download files from the internet and transfer to WP

I am able to download files from the internet as I have downloaded stuff from online for college assignments and I have
also been able to download by CV from my online drive. I have also downloaded past exam papers for core maths. I
have downloaded applications for jobs and filled them in.
Ability to use a search engine e.g. Altavista, Google

I have the ability to use a search engine and I use search engines when doing coursework and also doing other research.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Creativity - Ability to generate new ideas or conceive existing ideas in a new way
I have used creativity whilst playing football by making new ways to try and win by changing the positions of the team
footballers I have also used creativity by taking a new approach to my coursework by doing the one which is the hardest
first.

Organisation and Planning - Ability to set down a systematic sequence of activities and carry them through in an effective
manner
I have organised the football games and the teams and I also phone to book the football pitch. I will ensure that everyone is
going to play by messaging them on a group chat via whatsapp.

I have done this when completing college assignments I am able to gather information from online sources and also use
Harvard referencing to show where the information came from.

Initiative - Ability to initiate, take decisions and act resourcefully

I do this at work many times when there is no manager to answer the phone I will take the call and if I can help anymore I
will. However I do feel that I need to improve on this further by making my own decisions.
IMPROVE OWN LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE

Self Management

Self-awareness – ability to identify and reflect on own strengths and weaknesses in relation to:
I feel that i am comfortable with expressing myself in front of others and I am a very confident person and do not feel
nervous when doing presentations in front of others.
I feel that I need to spend more time on doing assignments rather than doing a bit at a time I should finish them all at
one time that way i will not rush at the last minute and that is what I have improved on.
Career Development: I Have a 5 year career plan and also an up to date cv that shows my strengths and I am currently doing
work placement at the Windhill community centre, which is helping me develop my employability skills.

Effective learning – ability to learn from a range of situations and apply learning in a variety of contexts
A skill that I have developed from football is to remain patient and i have taken this with me to college as I am more patient
than I was before.
Reasoning skills – ability to defend argument using logical and systematic thinking based on sound evidence

I am not very skilled at this point however I feel that if I do more research before an argument it will be beneficial for
me.

Reflection – ability to reflect on and critique own performance

I take the feedback that is given to me when I get a resubmission and I will work on that and it helps me on my
assignment and i will try not to make the same mistake twice.

given in before the deadline. I can use the library to find books and journal activities and I am in the library at college
regularly. I can take notes down in lesson and I use them when doing my assignment. I have started to use harvard
referencing this year in my assignments
