Weighing electronics
Introduction
General characteristics Weighing electronics

Nowadays, in areas of automation and process technology that

involve measurement of forces or weights, state-of-the-art
weighing systems are used to monitor and control a wide variety
of production processes.
Their use extends from simple applications, such as the monitor-
ing of belt tension or filling level measurement of containers and
bins, to complex proportioning tasks, such as making of mix-
tures based on specified recipes.
Weighing systems are particularly suitable for measuring tasks
requiring high accuracy or verification and for applications for ■ Weighing and proportioning

The highlight: SIWAREX modules are integrated into the automa-
tion system with the same engineering tools as all other automa-
tion components. This is an excellent solution which reduces
engineering costs and training expenses.
The advantages of direct integration at a glance:
7 Low-cost system integration because no additional cou-
pling modules are required due to direct integration
7 Low configuration costs due to the uniform system concept
7 System-compatible module response

7 High plant availability
7 Easy installation due to snap-on technique
7 Low space requirements due to compact design

High plant availability – to ensure that production does not The faceplates can be used to monitor the weight values and
come to a halt control the scales.
Apart from the advantage that required configuration know-how
is limited to a single system, there are also enormous advan-
tages in terms of plant availability.
In the SIMATIC S7 for example, faults (measuring range
exceeded, etc.) are reported to the automation system via diag-
nostic interrupts without writing a single line of programming
code.

and, if necessary, replace the defective module.
When "active bus modules" are used, the SIWAREX U, M and A
electronic weighing systems can even be replaced under
power. A replaced module is automatically detected by the pro-
grammable controller. Due to transparent data management, the
scales parameters saved in the automation system can then be
transferred to the new weighing module. The scales become
immediately available for weighing tasks again – readjustment
with calibration weights is not necessary (except in applications
requiring verification).
Since SIWAREX weighing systems consist exclusively of stan-
dard components (e.g. SIWAREX weighing modules, SIMATIC
digital input/outputs, etc.), spare parts inventories are very easy
to handle.

■ Application
The JB junction and distribution box is required for parallel con- LC: load cell JB: junction box
nection of load cells, and as a connection or extension for diffe-
rent or special measuring cables. Four load cells can be con-
8 load cells
nected in parallel in one junction box.
If more than 4 load cells are to be connected, a second junction
box must be connected in parallel via a cross connection. The
junction box can be used in potentially explosive areas (groun-
ded, intrinsically-safe circuits).

■ Design
The junction and distribution box made of die-cast aluminum
consists of a base section and a cover. The housing is sealed
against penetration of dust and splashed water in accordance
with IP 66 degree of protection. The cables enter the casing via
metric cable glands. In the housing, there are 28 terminals with
spring-mounted contacts. The spring-mounted system results in
vibration-resistant, maintenance-free connections.
The internal resistance, characteristic value and nominal load of
all load cells connected in parallel must be identical. The values
of these variables are not limited by the junction box. Load cells
can be connected using a four-wire or six-wire system.
With the four-wire system, two jumpers must be set in addition.

necessary to load the scale parameters from the replaced mod-

Apart from the function for calibrating SIWAREX U with an
applied calibration weight, theoretical calibration is also possi-
ble via the characteristic value and rated load of the load cells.

Zero setting time consuming setting of DIP switches or plug-in jumpers.

The zero point of the weighing system can shift (e.g. due to soil-

point is applicable to all subsequent weighing operations until
zero setting is performed again.
Limits
SIWAREX U has 2 parameterizable limits per measuring channel
which can be parameterized as the minimum or maximum value.
The magnitude of the hysteresis is defined indirectly via the
switch-on point and switch-off points (see Fig.). The hysteresis is
used to prevent the limit status from switching repeatedly while
the weight value is hovering around the specified limit.

■ Parameterization and commissioning of SIWAREX M

SIWAREX M can be commissioned quickly and easily using the
Windows parameterization software SIWATOOL. The PC is
directly connected to SIWAREX M via the RS 232 or TTY inter-
face.
Even users with no knowledge of programming will find it easy to
specify all settable parameters of the weighing electronics via
input screens, store them on diskette and print them out on a
printer for system documentation. There is no need for tedious
setting of DIP switches or plug-in jumpers.

Data block DB-SIWAREX (user interface)

DB-SIWAREX consists of two parts – the job mailboxes and the
parameter area (see Fig. below). The parameter area contains
the scales parameters and is divided into individual data records
(DR). A data record can contain a single scales parameter (e.g.
DR22: setpoint) or a number of scales parameters (e.g. DR23:
proportioning data).
The job mailboxes of DB-SIWAREX specify whether a data
record is to be written to SIWAREX M or read from SIWAREX M.
Read or write jobs are defined by specifying the numbers of the
data records to be transferred.
Several data records which are to be read or written can be
defined in the job mailboxes at the same time (see example:

In conjunction with "active bus modules," SIWAREX M supports
hot swapping of the module.
When a defective module has been replaced, the scales param-
eters can be transferred to the OS (operator station) by pressing
a button, or automatically (if configured in the CFC) to the new
module. The new weighing module is then immediately available
for weighing tasks.

The SIWAREX Batch software package contains all standard
functions which are required independent of the sector.
SIWAREX Batch is designed such that application-specific

are open for the user.
SIWAREX Batch comprises a kernel for batch control, and sev-
eral subroutines for functions such as proportioning with
SIWAREX M, mixing, emptying, etc.
In order to use SIWAREX Batch for several production lines, it is
only necessary to repeatedly call the corresponding parts of the
program in the automation system. It is possible for proportion-
ing operations to execute simultaneously in several scales, or to
control a production line with offset recipes. The software open-
ness and flexibility means that mixed operation of SIWAREX M
and proportioning pumps is possible for solving the proportion-
ing task.
The required hardware – whether a small CPU 314 or a powerful
CPU 417 – is selected depending on the complexity of the con-
trolled process. SIWAREX Batch can be used for small batching
scales (e.g. one scale with mixer and a few recipes and compo-

nals for coarse and fine flows with a precision of 1 ms.
During proportioning, the coarse flow and fine flow switch-off
points are continuously optimized. Optimization of both switch-
off points not only ensures filling that can be precisely verified
but also a rapid proportioning process and therefore high plant
throughput.
Several self-adjusting controllers are available for optimization of
the switch-off points. These allow fluctuations in material flow as
well as variations in material densities to be detected and com-
pensated.
Irregularities in proportioning are evaluated using statistical
techniques and therefore do not have a negative effect on sub-
sequent proportioning procedures.
The universal proportioning control can handle special operat-
ing conditions such as the use of hammers or vibrators just as

easily as the dynamic transient response of the scales or a sack
breakage. Parameterization can be performed on-line and off-line. In off-
line mode, entered parameters can be used later and trans-
ferred to the modules in on-line mode. The diagnostic functions
in on-line mode facilitate reliable fault localization (i.e. fast com-
missioning of SIWAREX A).
Within the SIMATIC automation system, the scales parameters
(i.e. data records) for the scales are available to the CPU (see
"Configuring in SIMATIC").
This means that when operator control and monitoring systems
are used (e.g. SIMATIC HMI operator panels OP7, OP17 etc., or

■ Configuration explosive atmosphere.
It is available in a version with metal housing and degree of pro-
tection IP 54 for installation outside the switchgear cabinet, and
in two further versions for installation inside the cabinet. The low-
current version must be selected if temperature class T6 is to be
achieved for the Ex protection. The reduced current output of the
Ex interface must be taken into consideration when selecting the
type and number of load cells.

Process I/Os in the Ex zone

Appropriate SIMATIC modules are available for digital and ana-
log inputs and outputs in the potentially explosive atmosphere.
The Ex modules are implemented for the automation of chemical
plants and can be used in instrumentation and control applicati-
ons. The primary task of the Ex modules is to isolate the intrinsi-
cally-safe circuits in the potentially explosive atmosphere and
the non-intrinsically-safe internal circuits of the programmable
controller.
If the digital inputs and outputs of SIWAREX M are routed into the
Ex zone, generally available Ex isolators can be implemented
(24 V).

Remote displays in the Ex zone

For the potentially explosive atmosphere, remote displays with
analog interfaces can be used for example which are connected
via an Ex isolator to the analog output of SIWAREX M or via an
intrinsically-safe analog output of SIMATIC. Alternatively, remote
displays in pressurized housings can be used (manufactured by
Siebert Industrieelektronik GmbH).

Operator control and monitoring in the Ex zone

For applications in potentially explosive atmospheres of zones 1
and 2, special intrinsically-safe operator panels are offered by
various manufacturers. These operator panels can, for example,

Unloaded bending beam ■ Application

SG SG SIWAREX R load cells are equipped with strain gauges (SG).
They are used for static and dynamic weight measurements.

■ Design and principle of operation

SG SG Load cells are sensors that convert a mechanical variable (i.e.
weight) into an electrical signal.
The basic element is a special type of spring body to which

friction-locked strain gauges are attached. Strain gauges are
F Stretched made of thin insulation material in which a resistance film has
Compressed SG been integrated.

Under the influence of a weight force F, the spring body is
deformed (see schematic presentation) and as a result the strain
gauge deforms elastically. Due to the change in the external
shape of the strain gauge, the ohmic resistance of its conductor
Compressed also changes. The top left and bottom right strain gauges are

compressed, their resistance films are shortened and the ohmic
resistance is reduced accordingly. The top right and bottom left
strain gauges are stretched, their resistance films are extended
Principle of a bending load cell and the ohmic resistance is increased.
For each load cell, at least 4 strain gauges are connected
EXC + together to form a complete Wheatstone bridge. The stretched
or compressed strain gauges are connected so that the positive
SENSE + or negative resistance changes are added together to form a
total imbalance in the bridge.

SG (stretched) SG (compressed) On one bridge diagonal, the power voltage is applied (with
6-conductor technique, also the sensor voltage, SENSE) and on
the other diagonal, the measured voltage is tapped.
With a constant power voltage (EXC), the measured voltage
(SIG) changes proportionally to the introduced load.

Elastomer bearing
■ Application
The self-centering elastomer bearing for load cells of series BB
is the ideal load introduction element for scales without guide

■ Design and principle of operation

Elastomer bearings are rubber-metal composites made of neo-
prene and stainless steel. Even with small dimensions, they
ensure large spring excursion and therefore a high degree of
damping.
If the load support is displaced by more than 4 mm in the hori-
zontal direction, measures for restricting sideways play (e.g.
stops) must be implemented in the construction of the load bear-

Combination mounting unit ■ Application
The self-aligning combination mounting unit for load cells of
series BB is particularly suitable for implementation in small-
scale container, platform and roller table scales.

■ Design and principle of operation

The combination mounting unit consists of a self-aligning bolt,
oscillation limit, protection against raising up, a top plate and a
base plate.
The self-aligning bolt allows the top plate (and thus the load
bearing implement) to follow horizontal displacements (e.g. due
to temperature fluctuations) with a swivel movement. Due to the
design of the self-aligning bolt, a restoring force is created
based on the amount of displacement and the applied load.
The oscillation limit prevents excessive sideways displacements
and reliably protects the load cell from damage. It can absorb a
maximum horizontal force of Fh = 5 kN.
Protection against raising up prevents the load bearing imple-
ment from raising up, up to a maximum vertical force of
Fv = 6 kN.
The integral overload protection ensures that the load cell is not
damaged by static overloading with vertical forces of up to 5 kN.
The rated measuring path of the load cell is 0.3 ± 0.03 mm at

Configuration example 1

■ Configuration ■ Description
Example 1: Container weighing
The upright container has a total center of gravity S which lies
above the level of the load cells.
It is supported on 4 brackets (specified by the container manu-
facturer), has an empty weight (i.e. dead load) of 1.2 t and a
maximum capacity of 1.8 t. The load is evenly distributed over all
4 load cells.
The scales are used in intrinsically-safe areas.

Note
A three-point bearing of the container is static and represents a
stable state (see page 4/42).

Selection of load cells and mounting components

The rated load is determined (as described on page 4/42) as 1 t.
For the above example, four SIWAREX R load cells of the RN
series with a rated load of 1 t were used because the high-quality
Container on RN series load cells and combination mounting unit precision RN load cell features an extremely low constructional
height.
Self-aligning combination mounting units were used as the
mounting components because, apart from the self-alignment
function and oscillation limitation, they also provide protection
against raising up. Protection against raising up can absorb a
vertical force of up to 10 kN. If larger "raising up" forces occur
(e.g. due to high winds), the container must also be equipped
with an additional natural disaster protection system.

■ Configuration ■ Description
Example 2: Container weighing
The suspended container has a total center of gravity S which
lies below the level of the load cells.
It is supported on 3 brackets, has an empty weight (i.e. dead
load) of 1.2 t and a maximum capacity of 1.8 t. The container has
a diameter of 1 m. While the individual components are being
weighed, a chemical reaction occurs which raises the tempera-
ture of the container and its contents from 18 °C to 55 °C.

Selection of load cells and mounting components

It is recommended that three SIWAREX R load cells of the RN
series with a rated load of 2 t be used (rated load is determined
as described on page 4/42). The load cells of the RN series were
selected due to their low constructional height.
Self-aligning bearings are used as the mounting components
because the container is suspended and cannot raise up off the
self-aligning bearing.
The container diameter will increase by 0.4 mm due to the tem-
perature increase of 37 K.
Since the self-aligning bearing permits a maximum oscillating
Container weighing with RN series load cells and self-aligning bearing movement of ± 4 mm, it is able to absorb the temperature
increase of the container.
Oscillation limitation is not necessary because there is a small
gap of b = 3 mm in width between the container and the plat-
form. In this case, the platform acts as the oscillation limitation.
If the width of the gap is larger in other applications, you must
decide whether to use combination mounting units instead of the
self-aligning bearing or whether an external means of oscillation
limitation should be implemented (see page 4/46).

Example 3: Mixer weighing
The suspended container has a total center of gravity S which
lies below the level of the load cells.
It is supported on three brackets, has an empty weight (i.e. dead
load) of 2.8 t and a maximum capacity of 4.5 t.
To improve mixing of the individual components, an agitator is
mounted on the container which also operates during the weigh-
ing process.

Selection of load cells and mounting components

It is recommended that three SIWAREX R load cells of the RN
series with a rated load of 3.5 t be used because the high-quality
precision RN load cell has an extremely low constructional
height (the rated load is determined as described on page 4/42).
Self-centering elastomer bearings are used as the mounting
components to minimize vibrations caused by the mixer.
The elastomer bearing permits a maximum oscillation path of
± 4 mm.
Oscillation limitation is not necessary because there is a small
gap of 3 mm in width between the container and the platform.
If the width of the gap is larger in other applications, stops or

■ Configuration ■ Description
Example 4: Roller table weighing
The roller table is supported on 4 load cells (as specified by the
equipment manufacturer), has a weight of 500 kg (i.e. dead
load) and weighs containers of up to 1000 kg.
The dead load is equally distributed over the 4 load cells. In a
worst case scenario, the weight of the container is distributed
over only 2 load cells.
For production reasons, the container cannot be halted on the
Roller table weighing on SB series load cell and combination mounting
unit with guide conveyor for the weighing process.

Note
A three-point bearing of the container is static and represents a
stable state (see remark on page 4/42).

Selection of load cells and mounting components

It is recommended that four SIWAREX R load cells of the SB
series with a rated load of 1 t be used because the load cells of
the SB series are capable of absorbing high lateral forces in the
preferred direction (rated load is determined as described on
page 4/42).
Self-aligning combination mounting units (only of stainless steel)
with additive guide elements which transfer lateral forces of up
to 1.7 kN are used as the mounting components.
The guide elements can deflect the lateral forces, caused when
the container hits each roller, directly to the foundation. This pro-
tects the load cells from interference and the accuracy and reli-
ability of the components are maintained.
The combination mounting unit also offers protection against
raising up for vertical forces of up to 10 kN.
