ur Januar y issue is always highly-
anticipated because this is when we share
with you exactly what you need to do to
take care of the changing energies. Feng
shui is a science centered on harnessing
good fortune luck and directing the energies so they work
for rather than against you, and while these energies are

of each New Year. Lillian Too’s great expertise lies in

his truly is an amazing young man indeed. Ever since we watched his
mesmerizing performance in Les Miserable’s with Anne Hathaway a couple of
years ago, we have been rooting for this Eton and Oxford graduated actor.
his Brit is deinitely going places. He bagged his irst Oscar last year playing
Stephen Hawking in he heory of Everything, but this should not stop him from
winning again because he truly has turned in another amazing performance
if the trailer is anything to go by. In he Danish Girl, he plays a Danish artist
who undergoes the irst known gender-change surgery in the 1930’s.
hese days, the transgender theme has come out of the closet and it can sway
sentiments to favour his movie. While he won last year, Eddie Redmayne is a
Metal Rooster, and Roosters have everything going for them in the coming year
of the Monkey. hey enjoy the incredible presence of the three Big Auspicious
stars brought by the year’s 24 mountain stars. he Academy Awards roll around
Feb 28th, which puts the event irmly within the Monkey Year; is this strong

original material. 2015 saw her top the Highest
Paid Actress list, with earnings over US$ 52
million. Will she win this year? She has won
before, in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook;
and at just 25 years old, two Oscars may be
excessive. Joy premieres December 25th and the
movie sees her teaming up with Bradley Cooper
again, with whom she played her Oscar-
winning Silver Linings role. She is a Metal
Horse, and in 2016, she enjoys blessings from

The newcomer about to make it really big, she
caught our eye playing the impossibly beautiful AI
robot in Ex-Machina. Swedish by birth, English is
not her irst language, but she has slipped into her
English-speaking ilm roles like a ish to water. Her
English accent is British and she possesses an ethereal
quality the Americans seem to love so much. She
has Golden Globe nominations in two categories,
for Best Actress in he Danish Girl and for Best
Supporting Actress playing Ava in Ex Machina. So
not exactly a dark horse but surely a massively new
talent who is sure to get everyone excited. For her part
opposite Eddie Redmayne in he Danish Girl, she
plays his wife Gerda who struggles with the loss of
her husband as he becomes a woman – not an easy
role but one absolutely perfect for showcasing new
talent! So she has been lucky indeed.

The Martian
Deinitely one of Hollywood most bankable
stars. He has already won an Oscar for
the ilm that put him on the map, Good
Will Hunting. But that win was for Best
Screenplay. For acting, he has been Oscar-
nominated twice but has never won; he
has been Globes-nominated six times, and
again, has never won. his year, besides
being fantastic in he Martian – few actors
can pull of acting in isolation (only Tom
Hanks has really managed it before in
Castaway), there doesn’t look to be any
other serious contenders in the Globe’s
comedy category. Perhaps Christian Bale
for he Big Short, but chances are good
for Matt to claim his Globe this time
around. He is a Metal Dog, which brings
him both Big and Small Auspicious luck in
2016. For Oscar glory however, some stifer
competition is likely.

CATE BLANCHETT for Carol

We adore Cate Blachett! Who does not? She is not a
newcomer to Oscar glory and indeed can be regarded as a
veteran of sorts, having won twice before for Blue Jasmine
and for he Aviator. Cate is not just chasing Oscar; no
indeed, she is aiming much higher as she looks to match
the legendary Meryl Streep, who holds the record having
won three Academy Awards and seven Golden Globes. Cate
Blanchett is an Earth Rooster, so the coming year holds
out some BIG huge opportunities. In the Globes, she faces
of co-star Rooney Mara for Best Actress in Todd Haynes’
Carol, a haunting movie based on Patricia Highsmith’s
novel chronicling the relationship between a young aspiring
photographer and an older woman going through a diicult
divorce. The film’s producers campaigned for Rooney
Mara to compete for Supporting Actress honors, but the
Hollywood Foreign Press didn’t buy Rooney’s role as a
supporting one. Might work against both in their campaign
for a win; but we love Cate; we are strongly rooting for her!

After months of anticipation, Star Wars Episode
VII finally arrived Dec 17th and it delivered on
every front. Director JJ Abrams did the biggest
galactic saga more than justice, matching -
and dare we say it - even improving on all the
previous Starwars films. But while fans may have
flocked to movie theaters nostalgic about their
old-time heroes Han Solo, Princess Leia and
Luke Skywalker, they will come away huge fans
of the new set, and in particular Rey, played by
newcomer Daisy Ridley. This Water Monkey lady

would come up. She had
no Wikipedia description, no Facebook
fan page, not even an IMDB bio. Her
internet presence was limited to several

Force Awakens, and overnight she has
become a sensation and truly the new

her current fame and popularity to her

exactly within the axis of the Trinity of
White Stars – 168.
he coming year thus holds out a
lot of promise for this talented young
actress. She has already started ilming
Episode VIII, due out in 2017. In the
meantime, her co-star John Boyega
who plays ex-Stormtrooper Finn is
also a Water Monkey, as is Oscar
Isaac who plays Poe Dameron, the star
ighter pilot of the Resistance. From
he Force Awakens, it looks like Poe
Dameron could be the younger version
of our roguish favourite Han Solo, and
Finn will most deinitely carry on as
the counter balance to Ridley’s Rey.
Surrounded by company that looks
blessed in terms of success luck should
ensure no hitches going forward as the
Starwars story continues to unfold.
Episode VIII unfortunately will
not feature JJ Abrams, who hands over
the reins to Rian Johnson, who will
both write and direct. Daisy Ridley has
read the whole script and she says, “It’s
very, very good.” She cannot say any
more, but with the mammoth Disney
and Lucasilm machinery behind the
production, it cannot go so far wrong.
As for other projects, for now, she
seems fully focused on the rest of the
Star Wars trilogy, the next one set for
a May 2017 release.
Star Wars has launched many
names, including of course Harrison
Ford, who acknowledges it was Star
Wars that really got him started in the
industry. For now, Daisy is getting
used to her fame while sharing her
incredible journey on Instagram along
the way (@daisyridley). We wish her
every success because we want to see
a lot more from this fresh-faced and

the spirituality of Bodhgaya
where the Buddha Shakyamuni
attained enlightenment, the cosmic
energy of Vulture’s Peak where the
Compassionate Buddha taught the
Heart Sutra, and the special magic
of wind currents that carry a million
Windhorse prayer flags into the
highest skies at Mussoorie.
Going to holy places is an uplifting
experience that opens the heart and
mind to a diferent dimension, one
that unlocks the spirituality within us
irrespective of what or who we may
be. hose who come on pilgrimage
with me and my MAFIA dharma
friends join me in many holy practices
that are so good for the soul; and so
calming to the spirit simply because
we engage in prayers and practices
under the expert guidance of our
so fully qualified Buddhist lama,
Khenpo Delek Rinpoche who speaks

water bowls and food. All logistics
including hotel and meals, transport
and bookings have also been quietly
organized by Connie and Hanni so

pilgrimage party feels out of place,

their private feeling, allowing their
senses to soar with joyousness as their

COME TO INDIA WITH ME
Nothing brings me as great a “high” as when I connect deeply with my students and
this has been the case for so many years. I feel truly blessed to be able to do the
kind of work I do. Many of those who fly to Kuala Lumpur to study feng shui with
me end up becoming my very special friends. This is one of the reasons I organize
pilgrimages and tours to holy lands and will continue to do so in the future, as these
are the times when our hearts and souls touch at some transcendental level, making
us all friends for life. Here I share some amazing images of just a few of them who
came with me on my recent pilgrimage.

(to charge the jewel, she tells us)
and next to her is a very special
lady, the one and only Snezhana
from Yakutzia, which is Siberia in
Northern Russia.

Here is our darling Faina who also

hails from Kalmykia, Russia. This
stunning lady graduated top of the
class at my recent MCC and is a
serious student of Buddhism. Here she
is photographed inside Shariputra’s
cave at Vulture Peak mountain. You
can see the beautiful glow on her
face reflecting the bliss she feels as
she poses inside this meditation cave
of an ancient yogi. To really practise
feng shui and be genuinely great at
it requires an awakening of the good
heart bringing forth the spiritual
within us all, and Ferne’s sweet smile
reflects this beautifully.

 his is the kind Ollay who runs and owns a highly successful
Bikram Yoga studio in Manila, Phillipines. She came to teach
me yoga for ten days in Kuala Lumpur and has become one
of those incredible souls sent to help me add another twenty
years to my life. I love her dearly and am so grateful that she
made even diicult yoga so easy and fun to practise!
At our urging, she sportingly demonstrates the triangle
pose on the top of Vulture Peak mountain. Ollay and her
lovely mother Caroline live and breathe a healthy lifestyle and
indeed, good feng shui requires a healthy mind and body. It
was genuinely fabulous having them both with us in India.

Mauritcio and Carolina Rodriguez came all the way from

Miami in Florida USA to join us in India. Originally
from Columbia, they are inance people who run their
own successful inancial venture companies and they also
believe strongly in our style of feng shui practice – easy,
laid back and highly potent. hey found the Bodhgaya
experience life changing! I know we shall be friends
forever because they really are so very special. Perhaps
one day I shall visit Columbia, land of emeralds, where
they originally come from.

his is Yenni (on the right) who is with her PA,

Tiffany. She comes from Indonesia and this is
her second trip with us. Yenni is a powerful but
extremely understated business lady who helps
manage her family’s multi-million dollar coalmining
business. But despite this formidable background,
Yenni exudes an air of gentleness I ind incredibly
endearing. here is a wondrous softness to Yenni’s
personality that endears her to everyone. She goes
seamlessly with the flow as she enjoys the flowering
of the spiritual within her.

Ray is from Hong Kong. Here he is with Khenpo Delek and

me during a tea break in our Bodhgaya prayer “gompa”. Ray
must have been a Buddhist in many past lives because he
blended so seamlessly into our prayer sessions, enthusiastically
embracing the chanting of mantras and praises at our pujas.
Ray is presently rearranging the feng shui of his home and
oice after graduating from our MPC program. Everyone
loves this handsome hunk, who has been nicknamed our
very own Richard Gere!

Living with good feng shui

ensures worldly success and
a great life in terms of having
it all in a worldly sense, but it
is nothing compared to living
with good karma. Positive
karma brings peace of mind,
bliss of spiritual comfort and
a continuing manifestation
of happiness vibrations
that make even the most
meager of worldly success
happenings appear awesome.
I think it must be my good
karma that enabled me to
embark with my beloved niece
Hanni Lim on an amazing six-
day journey driving the hills of
the Southern Himalayas.

W
e are travelling with
Khenpo Delek
Rinpoche our
Guru-je and also
our dearest friend
and his wonderful brother Lama
Kunchok. he journey seemed very
surreal as we spent six days travelling
from one small town to the next,
driving along winding mountain roads,
many parts of which were muddy and
dusty and perched precariously on the
sides of steep mountains.
But we keep seeing many
auspicious signs – we see elephants
and camels, and we experience
wondrous manifestations of magical
visions in the skies – eagles and
amazing cloud formations alongside
some pretty powerful transformations
taking place inside our minds.
Most fabulous of all were the
unbelievably dreamlike conversations
we have with the usually reserved
Khenpo Delek and his brother – in the
car, inside roadside restaurants, along
wayside rocks and river views. Let me
try and ofer you my readers a little of
the flavour of those magical six days…
Ostensibly, the purpose of our
journey is to visit the meditation
cave of PADMASAMBHAVA, the
second Buddha, the lotus-born Guru
Rinpoche in Tso Pema near the town
of Mandi. We had previously visited
the place in March last year, but since
then, something inside me had been
nagging me to go again!
Last year’s visit, we went with a
bus load of 30 others and that trip
had been illed with one disaster after
another. It had rained through the trip
then, making it unbelievably diicult
for us. here were so many obstacles
that journey. Since then I have been
wanting to go back, but privately
rather than with a group. Alas, it is not
something easy to arrange… we need
to go with Khenpo Delek and we need
to go by car.
These Ling brothers are very
busy lamas; it is not always easy to
ind a window of opportunity when
our schedules allow us time to make
this kind of journey. It also does not
seem very safe to go by bus and the
place is also near the Pakistan Border.
Potentially then it is quite an arduous
journey to embark on, but in early
December just after my Pilgrimage to
Bodhgaya and Mussoorie, we found
ourselves actually waving goodbye to
the rest of the Pilgrimage group we
had taken there, while the four of us
set out on our own very private journey
to Mandi. It is awesome just thinking
about it.
Our route takes us via
CHANDIGARH, which Khenpo
describes as one of the more beautiful
cities of India. his is a Sikh city in
the State of Punjab. Stopping here will

as it will be daylight when we arrive.
We have no pre-booked hotels, so it
is a matter of driving to a place and
then looking for a hotel. So we enter
Chandigarh with no pre-booked place
to stay.
Here’s the thing. Neither of the
brothers have a clue about hotels in

take pictures!
Chandigarh. he idea is to drive and
see which hotel catches our eye. One
such hotel did. It was located along
the Highway and it was a big building,
at least 10 levels high. It looked clean
and reasonably modern, and it caught
all our attention at the same time. We
drive to the entrance, which is quite
small considering the size of the hotel.

welcomes us.
Khenpo tells me to go in to investigate,
which I do with Hanni.
I am charmed by the hotel.
The receptionist is a pleasant
looking man who passes me a sheet
that details out the rates and room
type. We are taken to the 5th floor by
another pleasant-looking fellow and
he shows us a room I thought was
very nice indeed. So we register and
ask for two rooms, and without any

the amazing river. he young man carrying the
kavadi says something in Hindi to Khenpo,
pointing to me. Khenpo says under his breath,
“He is very greedy, better get into the car...”I
notice that surreptitiously several more young
men have materialized from nowhere and they
are suddenly surrounding our car using the
kavadi to block our vehicle from moving. We
are inside the car.
hat is when Khenpo opens the door, walks
resolutely round the car to where the kavadi
with the local deity is blocking our car. Without
saying a word, he pushes it aside thereby freeing
the way for the car to move forward. He then
gets into the car and tells the driver to move on.
I am holding my breath as I realize the whole
thing can get ugly, but Khenpo is calm. He does
not say anything but I think he was really brave!
He never referred to the incident again. But I
realize that there must have been something in
the way he caused the young men to move aside
and refrain from trying to rob us.
Soon it is time to make our way to the cave
at Tso pema. For this we climb higher to the
very top of the mountain, and it is on the way
there that the skies manifest some exceptional
signs for us to see. First come the eagles, who are
in reality the Dakinis welcoming us, and then
there appear in the vast skies an exceptionally
long katvanga, the powerful implement of

he Tso Pema cave is where Guru
Rinpoche meditated with Mandarava.
We think it is she who is welcoming
us to the cave, because the enormous
trident is pointing straight in the
direction of the cave.
Even Khenpo Delek expresses
astonishment at the enormous sign in
the skies. Usually reticent and rarely
responding to the oohs and ahhs we
express each time we see something
magical, this time Khenpo shook his
head in wonder. And indeed, the skies
that morning with the early rising sun
was truly magical! he Trident is clearly
evident…and the cloud formations are
beautiful! And every now and again,
an eagle would glide close to us saying
hello. he whole sky looks amazingly
extraordinary!
When we arrive at the cave a few
minutes later, we ind we are early birds
indeed. We are the only ones there at
this early time of the morning. We are
greeted by more eagles and there is a
tree directly facing the cave entrance,
and as soon as we arrive, tiny birds
of diferent hues fly to perch on the
branches of what we realize must be a
wish-granting tree. More good signs as
we are also greeted by three old nuns
aged 87, 88 and 89 years of age. hey
appear bright-eyed and their peerless
complexion is a sight to behold. he

is all set for us to ofer lights to the
Buddhas.
hat morning we have the prayer
cave and the meditation cave all to
ourselves, enabling Khenpo to do
many auspicious prayers and pujas,
and also for us to do some fabulous
meditations benefitting from the
special energy of the cave.
I feel a sense of liberation sitting
inside the cave – it really is rather
special being able to come here to do
prayers for my family, my friends and
also for my country and the world. I
pray that 2016 will see the harsh anger
energy of the previous year recede, that
somehow there will be a lessening of
the killings and the natural disasters
we witnessed in 2015.
We depart the cave after bidding
farewell to the nuns who are caretakers
of the place. hey present us bracelet
malas as personal gifts, which is
awesome considering they have been
saying prayers with those malas for well
over forty years! We feel very blessed.
Later, we make our way into the
massive Guru Rinpoche statue by the
holy Tso Pema lake, which legend
tells us was magically created by
Guru Rinpoche. his time we have
plenty of time to feast our eyes on the
incredible Tibetan monastic wall art
within the statue. Truly these must
have been executed by master artists,
for they are breathtaking. he colours
are vibrant and sharp, and the images
look so life-like they are almost three
dimensional. We had missed seeing
this on our previous trip here, but this

time Hanni and I spent a full hour
inside. here was no one else, just us.
Khenpo diligently explained every
protector and deity painted, and the
signiicance of many of the images
within.
The central image features
Amitabha Buddha, the glorious
Buddha of boundless light who is
also the head of the Padma or Lotus
family. It is widely believed that
Guru Rinpoche is a manifestation
of Amitabha Buddha. hus is Guru
Rinpoche known as the Lotus-born
Guru and in all his manifestations is
always referred to this way.
Our Himalayan journey also took
us to Mandi, and along the road to
Manali, where we go to drink the
waters of King Gesar, before we return
once again via Chandigarh. We did not
see the irst hotel where we had stayed
on our inward journey; we stayed by a
hotel adjacent to the Chandigarh Rose
Gardens.
It was a treat, for these gardens
are the largest, most magniicent rose
parks in Asia. We spend hours walking
the park, making mandala oferings
of rose blooms to the Buddhas and
Bodhisattvas, surely an amazing inale
to a grand tour?
Hanni even discovered a very
special WINDCHIME TREE in the
park, complete with birds and metal
rods making beautiful music!

Hidden Gem of Portugal

I
t is raining and dark as we try to
negotiate our way out of Lisbon
airport in heavy traffic in a
rented car. But once we cross the
17.2 km long Vasco Da Gama
bridge that links the north to the south
of Portugal, we are on a home-run to
our destination in Alentejo. Situated
in southern central Portugal, it covers
about a third of the country with vast
rolling plains punctuated with wheat
ields, olive groves, vineyards and cork
oaks that are grown on a commercial
scale.
his region is the world’s largest
producer of corks, an industry dating
back 300 years. he fertile plains and
favourable weather contribute to its
reputation as the “bread basket of
Portugal” famed for its bread, cheese,
smoked ham, wine and olive oil. On

this premise, we set out to explore this
hidden gem of Portugal.
The Castle of Alcácer do Sal
Our irst night is spent at the Pousada
de Alcácer do Sal (pousadas are the
iconic brand of inns housed in restored
ancient heritage buildings and castles
in Portugal). After getting lost in the
dark, there in the inky night sky, the
outline of a medieval castle looms in
sight against the light of the pousada. It
is a wonderful boutique hotel skilfully
marrying antiquity with modern
comfort for guests in the splendid
grounds of the castle. At daybreak, I
look out of my window and am thrilled
to see the castle wall right outside my
room. How cool is it to sleep in a
medieval castle!

is stunning with a stretch of ochre-
ploughed ield nestled by the River
Sado against a blue sky. he pousada
is built within the rampart of the
castle on the ruins of the Convent of
Aracoelli, the most recent restoration
of the fortress. Perched high on a
strategic defence position on a hill
overlooking the river, the castle was
built by the Moors over a Roman
ruin and remnants of civilisation in
the Iron Age. If walls could speak,
it would tell of the many battles and
conquests between the Christian and
Islamic rulers over the centuries, each
adding a tower here or a rampart there
to further fortify the castle. Its last
incarnation was the convent with parts
of the building and chapel beautifully
restored, which forms the hotel today.
There is an amazing museum
underneath the castle at the
Archaeological Crypt, where remains
of ancient civilisation including the
Neolithic and Iron Age periods were
discovered. It is a timeline of the
various periods of civilisations from
the Romans, and the Moors to the
Christian settlements, and there
are many artefacts from jewellery,
pottery and stonework among other
fascinating objects.
A Living Museum
We continue our journey to the capital
of Alentejo, the citadel city of Evora
and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Every inch of this fascinating city
is steeped in history, with remains

city limit and a Roman Temple ruin
in the historic centre. Evora is a
living museum, showcasing its rich
architectural heritage that ranges
from Roman to neo-classical, Gothic,
Manueline, Renaissance and Baroque
aesthetics.
Located at a strategic position in
ancient times, it flourished as a city
and was occupied by various foreign
invaders including the Romans and
notably the Moors from 715 till 1165
until it was reconquered by King
Afonso I in 1166. Its many beautiful
churches, cathedrals and magniicent
patrician buildings reflect the historical
wealth and importance of the city,
especially in the 15th century during
the “Age of Discoveries” of Portugal
at the height of its navigational power
that brought great wealth to the
country.
A labyrinth of narrow cobbled
streets and squares criss-cross the
city and at every corner there would
be a splendid ecclesiastical edifice,
an impressive monument or a grand
residence. Praca do Giraldo, the
bustling main square, has a gruesome
history of public execution, especially
during the inquisition period; but

A Rural Sanctuary
On the inal leg of our journey, we
drive through the countryside and
call briefly at the town of Arraiolos, a
hilly medieval town famous for their
hand-woven rugs. We stop for lunch
at the Pousada de Arraiolos, a tranquil
hotel in a country setting converted
from a former 16th century convent,
complete with a beautiful chapel
decorated with azulejos hand-painted
tiles. From a vantage point from one
of the bedrooms, the beauty of the
Alentejo landscape manifests itself

We leave Portugal with reluctance
and fond memories of Alentejo.

untouristy, it is a great destination

graced with castles, palaces, convents
and ancient monuments, all indelible
legacies left behind by the Romans,
Moors and Portuguese kings of yore.

Childhood Memories
As a little girl, I remember following my
mother around the house as she cooked and
cleaned and found little ways of making our
family life more comfortable. Being with
her was precious bonding time and I kept
busy in the kitchen helping to pound sambal
in a lesung batu or to scrape coconut on the
old kukur. It was here that I picked up the
Malay housewife’s petua or household tips
to perfect a recipe and make food taste more
delicious - one of which is cooking with
irewood or sabut (coconut husk).
Indeed, my mother’s cooking was done
over open ire fed with irewood from the
rubber estate behind the doctor’s quarters
where we lived. I remember how happy
we were collecting twigs and branches and
helping to saw fallen trees after a storm.
The rainy season brought the family
good tidings as plenty of edible herbs and
mushrooms growing in the clearing were
picked and a month’s supply of irewood
was cut, dried and stored in the shed behind
the kitchen. hus, in her own resourceful
way, my mother contributed a great deal to
the smooth-running of our home.
During the weekends, my doctor father
was no less enthusiastic about putting food
on the table for his seven hungry children
and several relatives who stayed with us.
he fruit season was an inviting time to
drive twenty miles to Kampung Linggi to
visit his 80 year old mother and to partake
of the wonderful fruits - rambutan, manggis,

langsat, durian - from the trees that grew
abundantly in the grounds of the Bugis
ancestral home. My grandmother, whom
my siblings and I called Tok, would potter
around the kitchen blowing into the
embers and cooking my father’s favourite
dishes despite being bent double with
osteoporosis.
Always, hanging above the kitchen ire,
there would be rows of lempuk wrapped in
pinang bark and left to smoke and mature
until her brood descended upon her to
devour them. he Malay delicacy made
from durian, flour and sugar would then be
sliced and served on a bed of freshly grated
coconut. My father and brother would
return in the early afternoon with their
spoils of wild fowl and forest pheasants after
a little hunting with their air rifles. hey
would also have picked up udang galah and
pucuk paku from a relative’s stall nearby.
Heading back to Seremban after a late
lunch cum tea, we would be gluttonously
full and the car would be groaning with
food to last the family a few wonderful
meals. We were frugal then and eating out
was a rarity.
A Time And A Place
For Everything
Every culture has its own concept of
time influenced not only by the physical
environment in which the people live but
also by their activities and occupations.
People who live in a temperate climate
and experience the four distinct seasons
– Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter -
organise their lives around them. Summer
would be a good time for outdoor sports
and activities, while during the cold, winter
months, bad weather would keep them
indoors for more sedentary occupations.
he clothes they wear would be very much
determined by changes in the weather and
climate.
In tropical countries where the sun is
ablaze throughout the year and temperatures
do not vary much, people dress in lighter
clothes for day and night. hey can indulge
in the same outdoor activities throughout
the year.
By their very nature, day and night
forebode contrasting things, especially
among primitive societies in remote areas
with no access to modern amenities such as
electricity which urbanites take for granted.
hus, in some cultures it is believed that
night and darkness invite ghosts and spirits
that lurk in the shadows waiting to pounce

on their human victims. Daytime and
bright sunlight would somehow make
these fears and superstitions go away.
The family I grew up in was
traditional and modern at the
same time. Having been mentored
by dedicated English teachers, my
father was a great believer in a sound
English education with the virtues of
etiquette and manners thrown into the
curriculum, while my mother never
ceased to remind us of our roots and
the Malay sopan santun, budi bahasa and
adab which gave the people their soul.
“Without our customs and traditions,
who are we?” she would rhetorically
ask, but she also understood very well
the democratic values of freedom and
equality, the very principles that the
religion of Islam espouses.
And so we children were allowed to
play our outdoor games – guli, gasing,
kunda-kandi - with friends of both sexes
until sunset, when she would herd us in
to wash up. We would be reminded to
be quiet for fear of disturbing the spirits
that would now roam the area. A visible
and audible sign would be the chirping
of a formation of tiny birds, which my
mother warned were the spirits taking
their place in the high heavens till
daylight.
Dusk would also be the time to
prepare ourselves for the maghrib
prayers after doing the ablution or
cleansing ritual. Once cleaned, cleansed
and in supplication to receive blessings
from the Almighty, we would settle
down to have the evening meal and
observe some quiet time, reading or
doing our homework around the dining
table.
Roots of Malay Culture
Indigenous Malay society had its roots
in the kampung or village where the
main occupation was rice farming on
the land and ishing in the river and
sea. he traditional Malay concept of
time was very much determined by the
daily prayers and rituals of Islam and the
seasonal cycle of rice farming. here was
preparation of the land and allowing it
to fallow, followed by planting of the
padi seeds and waiting for them to grow
to maturity and inally, the harvesting
of the ripened grain.
An essential component of farming
was a sympathetic climate which
balanced the wet season of monsoon
rains and a short dry season. Accordingly,
Allah’s blessings were sought through
prayer and doa’. Feasts and celebrations
such as weddings and thanksgiving were
planned around the good times. When
an unusually wet monsoon over-flooded
the rice ields or a long season of drought
resulted in a poor harvest, celebrations
would be postponed until times changed
for the better.
I remember accompanying my mother
on seemingly endless trips to the remote
village of Nyalas in Melaka to see for
ourselves the damage caused to the rice
ields by the merciless torrential rain or
scorching sun. hen the harvest would be
poor and the rice grains inferior. However,
the kampung folk were never short of
rice as they would have saved some for a
rainy day in a huge tempayan. On visits
to see my mother’s father, Tok Manan the
village penghulu, we would always have
the season’s rice with chicken, vegetables
and herbs from his own backyard.
Coming from remote villages in
Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, my father
and mother brought many of the values
and practices they grew up with into their
marital home. Raised to be disciplined
and frugal by his widowed mother,
assisted by caring uncles who were learned
in the Sui tradition of Islam, my father
imbibed these values, in his life. My
mother’s Minangkabau values instilled
by a doting father, made her a strong
woman who raised her six daughters to
be self-reliant and conident members of
the weaker sex.
It is amazing how these same family
values are transmitted from generation
to generation to sustain us in handling
the vicissitude of challenges in our lives.
It is wonderful how they are ingeniously
adapted to modern living to become
contemporary and relevant. he lessons
learned from our mothers and fathers
will be recycled to emerge as values that
we ourselves instill in our children and
grandchildren.

So we organised a charity dinner
called ‘Dynasty Women’,” explains
Caroline Wong. “Calvin Lee is
Malaysia’s most famous impersonator
of Anita Mui and has organised many
singing contests. He invited previous
winners to sing in homage to the
Emperor.”

for hair and make-up and got 40 of
her students to participate and pay
for their own costumes and headgear,
which cost RM500 to RM1,000 each.

table at low prices at RM1,000 so we

Most know Empress Wu Mei Niang
as Wu Zetian. How this came about
is the stuff of legend.
After her sickly husband Emperor
Gaozong died, Empress Wu became
Dowager Empress and tried to
rule. Her eldest son took a swipe at
the throne but was derailed by his
mother who sent him into exile. She
installed her second son, knowing he
was not Emperor material, nor did he
want to rule, so Empress Wu cited
his speech impediment as an excuse
and announced herself Emperor of
China.
In Chinese, ‘Emperor’ was
interchangeable with ‘Empress’,
‘Empress Consort’ or ‘Empress
Regnant’ but as she had no husband,
this meant she was effectively
Emperor.
This caused a mega sensation.
Not only was she a woman (and a
bossy one at that), she entered court
life as a lowly 5th ranked concubine,
though she rose to become the
consort of Emperor Taizong, the
father of Emperor Gaozong! She had
slept with father and son! A scenario
never seen before!
After Emperor Taizong died, by
custom Wu was sent to be a nun in a
temple for the rest of her life. It was
her great good luck the new Emperor
Gaozong had secretly been in love
with her since he was a teenager and
promptly brought her back to the
palace.
Upon her self-declaration as
Emperor/Empress, many courtiers
revolted, declaring the ruler had to
be a Son of Heaven, not a daughter,
as this was the Mandate of Heaven.
In front of everyone, Empress Wu Mei
Niang uttered the immortal words,
“Heaven? I (Wu) am Heaven!”
‘Tian’ means ‘heaven’ and ‘ze’ is ‘am’
so ‘I am Heaven’ became ‘Wu Zetian’
or ‘Wu is Heaven’!
A thousand years later, French
King Louis XIV did a Wu Zetian.
When his courtiers asked him to

girl to sort it all out – which she did,
very eiciently! Anthony and I now

into assets and liabilities, and most
importantly, what happens if one or
both of us dies or falls sick.
The Estate Planner also has
another qualiication, one that allows
her to provide advice about and sell
insurance products. Aha! And I was
wondering how much money she
could make by being an administrative

and I hated everything – the fact that
Anthony and I were always broke and
that our parents did not give us money
and that our Bosses paid us a measly
salary for long working hours. I was
so depressed that I quarrelled with my
sweet-tempered husband everyday, and
at times, I think I sunk into depression.
But we had one desire, and I think
it is the main reason why we have
made it today! Anthony and I wanted
to get out of our misery. We wanted
so desperately to have a better life! As
I wrote in my irst article, I attended
your talk, and at that time, you planted
the SEED OF HOPE in my brain and
more importantly, in my heart!
Here’s what I think of Lillian Too
and feng shui today. hat feng shui
is something I can pin my hopes
on. Lillian Too is someone like a
motivational speaker, and she teaches
you how to focus on what you want
in your life. he feng shui enhancers
and cures that I buy and display in
my home are items that I look at every
day, and it re-affirms my desire to
work hard and achieve what I want. I
channel all my brain energy into the
feng shui items. Zoom, zoom, zoom,
focus, focus, focus! I hear it and I am
sure the cosmic forces hear it also.
I am reminded of a friend who
asked my advice on feng shui way
back. He hated to be an employee and
wanted to be his own boss. He quit
his job without consulting his wife
and set up an advertising company.
Alas, business was very poor. Not
even 1 client – zilch! It is hard to be
a start-up. Big brand advertisers like
WPP, Omnicom and Publicis have
access to world class teams of creative

people sprinkled in branches all over
the world, as well as savvy media
people who can get the best rates and
advertising spaces. Together, they can
market the clients’ products world-
wide! Of course they can!
My friend was so desperate to buy
milk powder for his kid, so I went to
his home and advised him to activate
his North and Southeast rooms. hen
we went shopping for a few feng shui
items (imitation, as he was not willing
to buy authentic WOFS products)
which he discreetly blue-tacked under
his desks and hid in storage boxes. His
wife was against such practices and it
would be very bad if he got caught.
A few weeks later, I asked him how
things were. His reply was, “I thought
I had already bought the feng shui
cure, why do I still need to solicit for
business? If I still need to send emails
or make cold-calls, then why should I
buy the feng shui item?” I was baled
by his reply, truly I was! We are not
talking about a young boy who had
just graduated from university, but
a mature man who had worked in
a corporate setting for many years!
Surely I did not have to tell him how
the world works!
Anyway I digressed.
Anthony was very clear-headed
back then. He knew that if he wanted
to be a somebody, he would need to
further his studies. But we had no
money, so he could only take a small
loan at a time, and sign up for studies
as and when he could aford to. He
had to clear of the loan before the
bank was willing to lend him another.
It was a terrible time. He would hunch
over his books at midnight and slept
only a couple of hours every night for
those few years (years!!!). I did all the
housework and as I ironed our work
clothes at midnight, I wondered if I
should have stayed single. At least I
would only have to iron 5 shirts instead
of 10!

was the small 5-element pagoda,
which worked marvelously! Anthony
got a good bonus that year, and the
LILLIAN TOO BRAND won my
heart and loyalty. He used the money
to study some more. We both also had
to pay our parents back for our study
loans, which left me very little money
to buy WOFS products. I knew I had
to cure the feng shui of my flat irst
before I could enhance it. I started out
buying only keychain WOFS products,
the little trinklets and the tiny crystal
balls. I could only aford those. But
I knew that I wanted to follow your
teachings, and I believed in you.
We never gave up. Life was
hard, it was tough, but we did
what we had to do. We did not
have quality sleep, he mugged over
his books and I slaved over the ironing.
We grumbled, we quarrelled, we yelled
at each other, but we persisted. he
only alternative was to really go ahead
and divorce, but divorce was a word
not commonly used in our society in
those days, and anyway, it would cost
another bomb to get divorced! We
probably needed to take a loan to pay
the lawyers to get us divorced!
As our collection of feng shui
cures and enhancers grew, so did the
list of Certiicates my hubby earned
under his belt. I know of people who
fail to complete their studies when
they have to do it after a long day at
work. Eventually they give up, after
struggling and failing the exam year
after year. I’d like to think that feng
shui helped Anthony, in some way,
academically.
hen came his irst break! Earlier
in that year, I had bought your little

not be slack about it as I was already
not buying (could not aford) your
recommended cures. His company
wanted to set up a new department
and his Boss asked if Anthony would
like to transfer.
Even though there was no budget for
a promotion or a pay increment for the
additional job role and responsibilities,
the Boss assured Anthony that it will
be a good place to learn. Anthony said
yes. It was one of the best decisions
Anthony has ever made! He was so
lucky to have been given a choice about
his future! here were other colleagues
but the Boss asked him!
And although it was very tough
setting up a department from scratch,
Anthony learnt a lot and very quickly.
Some nights he did not sleep, mugging
over his laptop. He had to make it
work! He was tasked to do it, and do
it he will!
It was the start of a career path
that today has brought him to scale
new heights in the field of Risk
Management. He also found the

and CFA. I sent these Certiicates to

wanted Anthony to know that I was
proud of him, and I treasured his hard
work and dedication.
Today, the Certiicates are displayed
on the South wall of his study room
(yes, today we both have our own study
rooms!) I am so happy and proud to see
his Certiicates all over the wall. Every
night, I turn on the lights that shine
brightly on them!
We paid for part-time help with
the household chores when our jobs
stabilized. Today, I have gone back to
ironing my hubby’s work shirts. I only
need to iron 5 of his, as I no longer
have to work! When I iron his shirt, I
repeat in my mind, “My hubby will be
wearing this shirt tomorrow. He will
look so smart and handsome wearing
this shirt that I iron with love. He will
continue to be very successful because
I am focusing my good energy into
ironing his shirt!”
I hope you publish this letter too,

To all the readers who are
struggling, don’t give up! hink of the
bigger picture – where is it that you
want to go? You will get there. You can
do it, really you can! To the readers
who are yelling and screaming at your
spouse or kids, please buy the cure for

life and persist.

A few months ago, I met a fella
at the temple who was very down on
his luck. He had fallen out with his
family, friends and worse of all, he
had no job! He conided in the monks
there and the monks advised him to
come to the temple every day to do
volunteer work. He could sweep the
floor or wash the toilets or help in the
kitchen. Anything he wished - as long
as he did something.
I had the good karma to meet
up with Rinpoche in Taichung a few
months ago as well. I was lucky - the
time and place and setting was right,
and so Rinpoche taught me how
to pray to Mother Tara. Before he
began teaching me, Rinpoche told
me, “just pray, if you can, everyday. If
you cannot, then pray when you can.
Do not think or worry if you do not
get your wish, just keep praying and
continue on.”
So you see, my dearest Lillian, you
were right! You already taught me this
10 years ago! I will keep doing what
I need to do – today, tomorrow, and
forever. Feng shui will help me, it will
bring me opportunities, and I will get
to be where I want to go. As always.

are done in confidence. I have done
consultations for temples and large
buildings as well. I also practice yin feng
shui; however, this is for speciic clients
only.
FSW: Do you discuss your feng shui
cases with other practitioners?
I do discuss some of diicult cases with
my masters; however they are very old
so it is hard to get them sometimes. But
I do not discuss the cases with other feng
shui masters as I ind that they are not
forthcoming on sharing information and
the formulas that they use to solve any
issues.
FSW: What are some of the most

Most of the consultations I have worked
on so far have been quite easy. But there
was one case where I found that his BaZi
and house were totally mismatched.
From the client’s side, he was not able
to aford to move out of the house as
I had proposed. In this case, I found
that I could not help him at all. I did
the best I could, but the client had to
encounter a loss of a family member in
order to overcome the bad period before
he could rise again.
It was a very hard decision to accept
this case, but when one asks for help, I
will do the best I can. Some people just
don’t have the luck; but if I can, I will
help them improve it.

and do a basic reading before I give any
advice. I believe that when heaven luck

what I can do is to maximise the feng

I believe in BaZi because even if the
feng shui of the property is bad, but the
person’s BaZi is very strong, the person
has the ability to turn the bad feng shui
property into one with good feng shui.
Similarly, if the luck is not strong, then
even if the feng shui of the property is
very good, once the person moves into
the property, he will end up destroying

FSW: In your opinion, which
animal sign is the luckiest and
which are worse in 2016?
What can they do to enhance the luck or
to help cure the bad luck?
Firstly, it is hard to deine the luck
of the animal signs alone, as each animal
sign has 5 diferent element tags to it. For
instance, there is the Wood Snake, the
Water Snake, the Metal Snake, the Earth
Snake and the Fire Snake. Each of the
Snakes will interact diferently with the
elements of the year. However if you ask
me in general, the Snake and the Boar’s
luck is weak in 2016. hese animal signs
should avoid going to funerals or hospitals
as bad energies can afect them. If they
have to go to such places, it’s best to visit
a shopping mall before going home to
help lift their energies and brush of any
bad energies. If they want, they can carry
a black tourmaline stone to help absorb
and deflect the inauspicious energies.
he absolute most unlucky sign is the
Tiger as it is confronting the Grand Duke.
As for the lucky signs, the Dragon
and Rat are the luckiest. hey should

A Don’t worry about it. It’s not advisable to wear
amulets when sleeping but it’s OK to wear
it if you’re taking a shower. However some
TARA pendants are coated with enamel or set with
crystals. Taking showers with them might cause the
enamel to come out… so better not to wear it while
showering.

Q We just rented a new place and discovered
that the toilet is in the centre of the house!
And also the toilet shared the same wall with
kitchen stove on the other side. I’ve heard that this is
very bad for wealth. What can we do?
A Oh dear….It’s always a good idea to check
these things before you rent a place! But now
that you are already there, then there is very
little you can do especially since you do not own this
property and renovation is probably not an option.
You could try and put in a request to your landlord
to have the stove moved away to another part of
the kitchen, as sharing it with a toilet wall is definitely
not a good idea. If you can’t do this, then other way
is to buy a portable stove and cook all your food in
another location in the kitchen. As for the toilet being
in the centre of the house, unless you move the
toilet elsewhere you can’t really do much about this.
Suggest you strengthen the centre location of all your
living areas with good energizers. For 2016 the best
is to place the Medicine Buddha Stupa in the centre
of your living room and the Golden Garuda Wulou in
the centre of your dining rooms. This will really help.
