Scenario 03: Cranston Plains/Siege

Introduction

This was the first game in my campaign where I introduced an overarching plot. Jediah was
a character I planned to used as a major antagonist, but he died so I ended up using Nora
anyway, which worked out fine. Many characters from this campaign became recurring ones
from the Territorial Authority storyline.

This game is an introduction of the TA and Faithful’s relationship if you play these games in
order, so it is important to use it to set the tone between the two organizations. In my game
they coexisted and even were symbiotic, but there was great friction as they pushed farther
apart while moving West.

Notes On Play
● This is a good full adventure for a party of three to four Dogs.
● Every character that survived this adventure became an important recurring
character.
● Jediah is a character who leverages the Faith to work in his favour. I played him as a
sort of apocalyptic street preacher who promised people salvation, and used the TA
as his “Great Satan” corrupting the West and the Faith. I had Jediah refrain from
violence against the Dogs at all cost, which added legitimacy to his cause and made
the Dogs hesitant to attack or harm him.
● Having the TA stuck outside the hostile town of Faithful doesn’t necessarily need any
more elements, but to ratchet up the intensity you can add a time-sensitive reason for
them to storm the town violently; terrible weather, arrival of a new commanding
officer, hostages, and so on.
● If you use the wolves as an avatar for evil characters or intentions later on, you need
to make their function clear here and then refrain from using them for other things
later. While DitV is best when dealing with human conflict, sometimes a game with
elements of external danger like the movie “The Edge” and so on is fun too. If the
wolves end up as a stand-in for supernatural evil, you kind of lose that option.
● Cassie’s role here as a member of a trading company is something I added to
leverage another character’s background. You can change what she does to
anything, really, or you could make the trading company an important fixture in your
game as well.
● I had Brooks execute a caravan trader who violated his blockade of Cranston, but he
clearly regretted the decision and felt he was over his head. This can be played many
ways; another fun option would be to have the Dogs come across the trail/execution
in process and intervene.
Cranston Plains/Siege

Pride
Brother Norman, the Steward of Cranston Plains, refuses to surrender one of his
townspeople to the Territorial Authority despite their demands.

Injustice
The people of Cranston Plains are being besieged and subjected to hardship.
Nora is being denied justice for her husband.

Sin
Captain Brooks is punishing the whole town for Jediah’s actions.
Jediah killed some Faithful while deserting Brooks’ military unit, then framed him for it.

Demonic Attacks
The demons are making it difficult to exit or enter town by revealing people’s positions to the
TA garrison, who have isolated it and supplies are running low.
A wolfpack skirts the edge of town, also preying on stray people and TA soldiers alike.

False Doctrine
Jediah: “The King of Life has provided me a higher calling, and my responsibilities are now
void.”
Norman: “Now I am called upon to protect the Faith from the East’s degeneracy.”

Corrupt Worship
Jediah believes the King of Life speaks to him in dreams, and is inspiring him to lead a fight
against the TA to free the Faithful from oppression.

False Priesthood
Jediah has a following of aggrieved townsfolk, including the ear of Norman.

Sorcery
Jediah consorts with demons to fight with the TA.

Hate & Murder

Brooks executed a caravan trader trying to enter the town, enraging the people.
Jediah killed two Faithful and claimed Brooks did it trying to find him.

Who’s Who?
Br. Jediah is an angry young man who sees visions of a future battle between the TA and
Faith. He deserted the military, killing several Faithful, and blamed Brooks.
● He wants to lead a fight with the Faithful against the TA.
Br. Norman is an old, iron-willed Warden who wants to protect the Faithful.
● He wants the TA to leave his student and town alone and restore trade.
Sr. Nora is the wife & sister of the Faithful murdered by Jediah; she has been wrapped up in
his teachings. Nora is seething with rage over the killings.
● She wants revenge for her husband.
Captain Homer Brooks is Jediah’s unit leader. He is reserved, thoughtful, but pedantic.
● He wants to bring Jediah to justice for his murders and clear his own name.
Sr. Cassie is a caravan company representative being detained who was trying to enter
town. She is crude but friendly.
● She wants to go free to tell the company what is happening.

The Demons Want:

If Jediah’s influence can escape town, there could be a bloodbath as the Faithful fight the
TA.

If the Dogs Never Appeared?

Jediah would eventually escape town and begin spreading his false dogma to the faithful.
