Argumentative writing
Components of an argument:
Claim- The statement being argued (a thesis) your position, stand or opinion
Data- The facts or evidence used to prove the argument. It is the basis of your claim.
Warrant- The general, hypothetical (and often implicit) logical statements that serve as bridges
between the claim and the data. Explanation that connects the claim and data
Backing: Statements that serve to support the warrants (i.e., arguments that don't necessarily
prove the main point being argued, but which do prove the warrants are true.)
Qualifier- : Statements that limit the strength of the argument or statements that propose the
conditions under which the argument is true. It makes the argument more specific.
Rebuttal- Counter-arguments or statements indicating circumstances when the general
argument does not hold true.

Argumentative essay pattern

Introduction- must contain the thesis statement, claim, and data. The first sentence must be interesting.
Body- must contain three sets of warrant and backing. The body must be divided into three paragraphs. Every
paragraph must present a new set of explanation and evidence.
This part may also contain the rebuttal.
Conclusion- may contain the strongest argument of the essay and a paraphrased version of the thesis
statement.
