Coveral Internal Floating Deck For Storage Tank

Coveral is a custom built internal floating deck, designed for installation in existing or new fixed roof
storage tanks. Coveral decks are sandwiched between sheets of high purity aluminium.
Coveral deck prevent losses of valuable volatile petroleum fractions by evaporation and during the
filling and emptying cycles of the storage tanks.

Additionally, Coveral decks prevent contamination of stored products by water vapour and dust.
Oxidation of product is also reduced be elimination of the liquid vapour interface.
The shallow structure of Coveral, which floats in full contact with the liquid surface causes virtually no
reduction of the storage capacity of the storage tank.

GENERAL
Normally Coveral panels can be introduced into an
existing tank through clean-out doors or manholes. If
these are not suitable, a slot can be cut in the roof
and subsequently repaired. Cutting the storage tank
shell is not recommended.

Before installation work can be started in an existing

tank, it must be gas-free and have any sludge build-
up removed. Dangerous contamination such as TEL
must be removed. Where an anti-rotation cable
needs to be fined, an anchoring device must be fined
externally to the roof plating, a further anchor is
welded to the bottom plates internally.

Roof / shell vents meeting the recommendations of

BS2654 Appendix F and other tank design codes amy
be fitted. Where filling/discharge rates are high and
extension may be necessary to the inlet pipe to
restrict turbulence in the seat area.
Anti-static and degassing trapdoor cables are suspended from an eyebolt bolted through the neck of
the roof manhole. Where mixers are installed, they must not be operated unless adequate clearance
exists between the blades and the deck supports or deck bottom. It is recommended that the tank
should be at least 2,3 lull before mixers are run.
If thestorage tank tank bottom has a protective lining or coating, this should be covered during
construction to avoid mechanical damage. Where distortion of tank shell or bottom has taken place,
Coveral decks can be specially modified to overcome this. A float test after construction completion is
unnecessary.

Coveral decks are modular in construction the panels are 2500mw long x 500mw wide, 4Omm thick.
The panels are joined by extruded aluminium H section and built in an interlocking herringbone pattern.
When decks are being fitted to existing tankage, the panels are normally introduced through manholes
or cleanout doors.

On-site construction is simple and does not require specialist labour. The decks are normally built on
acrow-prop supported falsework which is moved as the root becomes self supporting on its built
support legs. The deck is rigid, both during construction and when completed and will adequately
support maintenance or inspection personnel both when floating and in the on-support condition.

Polyether foam contained in a nylon-based polyurethane

envelope forms the seal which matches the curvature of the
tanks wall. The seal is fitted slightly above the liquid surface
and designed for products with 100% aromatics content;
specialised seals can be supplied for other applications.
The support legs are arranged in a circular pattern with the
outer ring of the legs not more than 700mw from the tank
wall and not more than 3500mw apart. Support legs supplied as standard are 1100mw in height though
adjustable legs giving variable landing heights to a maximum of 1800mw can be supplied. Coveral decks
can be installed in tanks with column supported roofs.

Safety

The aluminium surface of Coveral decks is electrically conductive and ensures sale removal of any build-
up or static electricity. The deck and tanks form a Faraday cage which gives protection during electrical
storms. Vapour build-up between Coveral and the tank roof is negligible under normal operation
conditions it is recommended that air vents around the root edge are provided in conversion of existing
storage tanks, in accordance with the recommendations of BS2654 Appendix E. Coveral decks float in
full contact with the liquid surface and are not liable to corrosion damage . The deck cannot be
submerged by accidental overflows though fining of an inlet extension to the filling line is suggested to
minimise turbulence in the seal area.
