Online learning vs. Face to face learning

Every day in schools everywhere kids are struggling to learn in ways that other are flourishing

and being greatly successful. Kids everywhere around the world struggle daily in schools or doing

schooling online. In this essay it will discuss the similarities to both face to face schooling and online

schooling. Although there are options for learning, the success of online or face to face education

depends on the type of person the student is, while mixing the two styles of education has proven to be

most effective.

To start with there is a large variety of people who go to an actual school and a large variety that

get an online education. Online and face to face schooling may not seem like they would have anything

in common, but they actually do. Both online and face to face schooling include a mix of verbal and non-

verbal communication. For example, online schooling includes videos which would be considered verbal

communication and online schooling also includes textbook learning which is non-verbal learning. In

public schools students have textbook learning which as stated already is non-verbal learning and in

public schools students also have teachers that actually stand in front of the class and teach them, which

is considered verbal communication. Another thing that online schooling and face to face schooling have

in common is they both use the same essentials which is textbooks, quizzes, studying, etc. No matter

option online schooling and face to face schooling students have the same exact things. The last

comparison is the costs of them both students and or parents pay a lot of money for public schooling

from school supplies yearly, gas costs to get to and from school daily, and just normal expenses like

school clothes. Online schooling is costly also because students and or parents have to fork out money
Hahn2

to buy electronics like laptops, iPad, books, etc. those are all costly things. Those are some of the many

reasons that online schooling and face to face schooling are very similar.

Next, everyone is different no one person is the same, so everyone’s preferred learning type is

going to be different. Most of the intake of knowledge depend on the type of student. According to

research, studies, and experiments that have been conducted rather than doing one or the other like

face to face learning or online learning blending the two of them together has been proven to be a

better style than just doing one of them. Many gifted students have stated that they prefer and do

better with online learning because they could go at their own pace and complete work at a pace that

work of them. Researchers have stated that group interaction and collaborative activities help people to

learn things that they never knew. According to John Watson “The blended approach of the Chicago

Virtual Charter School and Odyssey Charter Schools has students spending a large majority of their time

working with established online curriculum at home, supporting that virtual instruction with face-to-face

instruction in a physical location (Watson 1).” Therefor all student no matter if they’re gifted or just a

regular non-scholar student should go through blended learning and attempt both face to face learning

and online learning it will help them to exceed even more and become a better person all around. An

experiment was done on grades 3-12 and college student and it was proven that there is no difference

between the two both of the modes were applicable. A study was done on a mathematics class and

where a group of students were randomly separated in to two groups and one group was online the

other was face to face in the classroom learning. The results were random very person dependent, but

there was a major point that the in the classroom face to face learning experience influenced the

learning experience the most because of the actual protraction in front of students and online helped to

make successful changes to help with kids learning. There are other effects to the both of these. For

example, some kids would rather do online learning because of bullying in public schools and some kids

do online because their families move all the time. Some kids do public school because they don’t have
Hahn3

the money to afford the computer, textbooks, internet, etc. they go to public school where there isn’t as

much of an expense. ”Additional cost for online is hardware and software upgrades, and for face to face

is fuel, clothes, and supplies (SACOB 2).” Also, kids do face to face schooling because they are tactile

learner, which is hands on learning, and they like to have a teacher standing in front of them to ask

questions if they are needed.

Above all teachers now a days have the feeling that can do what they want because they’re the

teachers which is true but thinking about it they should take in to consideration their students. For

example, many children do not have access to the internet, computers, phones, etc and 90% of the time

teachers expect students to do the work that is unable to completed in school at home. For some kids

that is not an option. Online schooling is an option for some kids and some kids choose it an prefer, but

what would happen if a public-school student is assigned an online homework assignment and are not

given time to complete it and they don’t have the access to complete it at home. Teacher don’t consider

that more than half of the time I know form a personal experience that I don’t have the internet access

at home and don’t have the access to a computer at home, and that puts a huge damper on my school

work for classes. To put this in perspective teacher should consider their students in the end and either

give them more time to complete their work in class or be more lenient on the kids that are in my

situation because I know my grade lag majorly from this. That’s why face to face schooling is huge

helpful thing for families and students.

Although there are options for learning, the success of online and face to face education

depends on the type of student the person is, while mixing the two styles have been proven most

effective. Therefor there is many factors as to which online education or face to face education is better

for students like student type, age, learning style, home life, and many more.
