Multisemiotic long dense noun group

This problem is tricky because it is multisemiotic and contains a long dense noun group. It is multisemiotic because
it contains a visual representation, symbols and written language. This requires the person solving the problem to
integrate three semiotic systems in order to solve. The line plot helps students to visualize the fractions to add
instead of looking at them in a list. If they were not displayed visually it could be confusing for younger students and
they may forget to add fractions if they well organized.

This problem is represented symbolically because of the vinculum, or the horizontal line that separates the
numerator and the denominator. It is extremely important to what those numbers represent as a dividend and a
divisor. If there was not a symbolic line between them they would be integers.

It is a long dense noun group because it has a head noun weight in pounds preceded by a post modifier of all the
soccer balls coach bought.

Solve:

The student would have to add all the fractions together. First, list the weights so you can cross them out as you add
them together that way you do not miss any or add any twice.
¾, ¾, ¾, 7/8, 7/8, 7/8, 1, 1

It is easiest to start with the two soccer balls that weigh one ounce.
1 + 1 = 2.
Then I would decide on a common denominator for the remainder of the fractions so that I could add them together
easier. Since 4 is a multiple of 8, I can multiple by 2/2 to get a common denominator. ¾ x 2/2 = 6/8.

The new equation would be 7/8 + 7/8 + 7/8 + 6/8 + 6/8 + 6/8 + 2 or simplified as (3x7) + (3x6) + 2
