From: Communities Under Threat (CUT)
A new group that aims to
campaign for the social, environmental and economic regeneration
of Central Middlesbrough
was established in Middlesbrough today (14 th December 2006).
The Group will be known as:
Communities Under Threat (CUT)
The ultimate goal of CUT is
to retain and defend an existing thriving and sustainable multi
cultural, multi racial community in central Middlesbrough and to
seek measures to improve it.
The group agreed that mass demolition is not the way to achieve
any of these goals.
Regeneration is best achieved by community driven initiatives and
that much can be achieved by improving the existing structural
sound housing stock.
A leading charity
Empty Homes Agency (EHA)
agreed to help the group formulate regeneration plans and ideas.

Verbatim:
Campaigners fighting to save their homes and their community
formed a new group
Communities Under Threat (abbreviation ‘CUT’)
and received the backing of a highly respected independent charity
this week.
John Earnshaw, a project manager for the Empty Homes Agency,
met with members of the Communities Under Threat (CUT) a
new grouping battling to give residents a united voice in the
regeneration process.
The Empty Homes Agency (EHA) is an independent campaigning
charity which seeks to highlight the waste of empty properties in
England and promotes solutions to bring buildings back into use.
John Earnshaw, from EHA, attended the inaugural meeting of
Communities Under Threat (CUT) held at Linthorpe Rd
Community Resource Centre on Thursday 14 th December. He
spent the day talking with residents and investigating the
neighbourhood.
He said: ‘I will be advising community groups on the courses of
action available and how they can move forward. What I find in a
lot of situations, with no disrespect to residents who are doing an
excellent job, is that they lack leadership and resources and
sometimes end up going round in circles’
Mr Earnshaw will now assess the situation in coordination with the
new local group CUT to offer advice and formulate plans for
regeneration.
Mr Earnshaw added that EHA had enjoyed success all over the
country in reducing the final number of demolitions and pointed to
Hull as an example. From a target of between 30005000
demolitions proposed in 200203 only a couple of hundred are
being pulled down.
His expertise was welcomed by the new chair of CUT Mr Peter Birt
saying that ‘he was very encouraged to have somebody of Mr
Earnshaw’s experience and qualifications onboard.
Adding: "I really feel this is the defining moment in the campaign
to preserve our much loved homes and community’.
