Airport Engineering Lecture - 1

Determination of Facility requirements:

1.  Airfield capacity – rate of an aircraft movement on
the runway/taxiway system that results in a given
level of delay.
2.  Terminal area capacity – the ability of the terminal
area to accept the passengers, cargo, and aircraft
that the airfield accommodates.
3.  Airspace capacity – the maximum number of
aircraft operations which can be safely handled within
limited airspace during a given time period.
4.  Airport access capacity – the passenger and vehicle
capacity of the existing and planned highways and
mass transit systems to and from the airport.

Master Plan (DOTC, 2013)

Airside facilities
Exist primarily for aircraft take-off and landing operations.
•  The most important element is the runway.
•  Other components include: taxiways, holding pad,
aprons, etc.
!  These are developed in association with runways to
permit the aircraft to move efficiently while on the
ground

Airport Engineering Lecture - 18

Factors affecting runway configuration and
orientation
1.  Wind
2.  Neighboring airports and airways
3.  Obstructions
4.  Topography
5.  Restricted areas
6.  Bird hazards
7.  Control tower visibility
8.  Jet blast and wing tip vortices (turbulence)
9.  Runway length
10. Environmental factors

Obstructions – Imaginary Surfaces
1.  Primary surface – longitudinally centered on a runway
(extends 60.96 meters from each end);
2.  Horizontal surface – horizontal plane above the established
airport elevation (45.72 meters);
3.  Conical surface – surface extending outward and upward
from the periphery of the horizontal surface at a slope of 20:1
for a horizontal distance of 1,219.20 m;
4.  Approach surface – longitudinally centered on the extended
runway centerline and extending outward and upward from
each end of the primary surface
5.  Transitional surfaces – extend outward and upward at right
angles to the runway centerline plus the runway centerline
extended at a slope of 7:1 from the sides of the primary
surface and approach surfaces

Factors affecting runway length

1.  Type of aircraft (aircraft performance)
2.  Maximum weight of aircraft (heavier " longer)
3.  Aircraft trip length (more fuel " heavier)
4.  Airport elevation (thin air " less lift " longer runways)
5.  Airport temperature (higher temps " longer runways)
6.  Surface winds (headwinds decrease length, tailwinds
increase length)
7.  Runway gradient (ascending grade " longer runways
for take-off, descending grade " longer runways for
landings)
