 ST MATTHEW RESSURECTS A DEAD MAN

One day at the men's monastery, the Monks were

discussing the miracles of St. Matthew. An older man said
that the saint had resurrected a farmer who was working in
the fields of the women's Monastery, the name of him was
George. As Father Ioannikios (Mendiatis +2012) listen to
this miracle, he wanted to talk to George himself. So he
went and sought him at the women's Monastery and
eventually he found him. He asked him to tell details of his
resurrection, and he told Father Ioannikios, "I was in the
fields, I was working as always, and suddenly I fell silent, I
do not remember how. Only something dark, dark forms I
remember getting close and I was scared too. He was a
glamorous young man and he did not let them hurt me.
When I opened my eyes again, over the top of me was the
Despot Matthew, other Monks and Nuns. I asked what had
happened and they told me, "You died in the middle of the
field, we ran to shout the holy father and told us to bring
you to him. We went to you and after hour of prayer, you
opened your eyes. Neither did you inhale, nor did you feel
your heart. After George's story, Father Ioannikios
understood even more that they had a saint among them.

ARCHBISHOP OF CONSTANTINOPLE

He was born in 329 in Arianzus, a village of the second district

of Cappadocia, not far from Nazianzus. His father, who later
became Bishop of Nazianzus, was named Gregory (com-
memorated Jan.1), and his mother was amed Nonna (Aug. 5);
both are among the saints, and so are his brother Caesarius
(Mar. 9) and his sister Gorgonia (Feb. 23).

At first he studied in Caesarea of Palestine, then in Alexandria,

and finally in Athens. As he was sailing from Alexandria to
Athens, a violent sea storm put in peril not only his life but also
his salvation, since he had not yet been baptized. With tears
and fervor he besought God to spare him, vowing to dedicate
his whole self to Him, and the tempest gave way to calm. At
Athens St. Gregory was later joined by St. Basil the Great,
whom he already knew, but now their acquaintanceship grew
into a lifelong brotherly love. Another fellow student of theirs
in Athens was the young Prince Julian, who later as emperor
was called the Apostate because he denied Christ and did all in
his power to restore paganism. Even in Athens, before Julian
had thrown off the mask of piety, St. Gregory saw what an
unsettled mind he had, and said, "What an evil the Roman
State is nourishing" (Orat. V, 24, PG 35:693).

After their studies at Athens, Gregory became Basil's

fellow ascetic, living the monastic life together with him for a
time in the hermitages of Pontus. His father ordained
him presbyter of the Church of Nazianzus, and St. Basil
consecrated him Bishop of Sasima (or Zansima), which was in
the archdiocese of Caesarea. This consecration was a source of
great sorrow to Gregory and a cause of misunderstanding
between him and Basil, but his love for Basil remained
unchanged, as can be plainly seen from his Funeral Oration on
Saint Basil (Orat. XLIII).

About the year 379, St. Gregory came to the assistance of

the Church of Constantinople, which had already been troubled
for forty years by the Arians; by his supremely wise words and
many labors he freed it from the corruption of heresy. He was
elected archbishop of that city by the Second Ecumenical
Council, which assembled there in 381, and condemned
Macedonius, Archbishop of Constantinople, as an enemy of
the Holy Spirit. When St. Gregory came to Constantinople, the
Arians had taken all the churches, and he was forced to serve in
a house chapel dedicated to St. Anastasia the Martyr. From
there he began to preach his famous five sermons on the Holy
Trinity, called the Triadica. When he left Constantinople two
years later, the Arians did not have one church left to them in
the city. St. Meletius of Antioch (see Feb. 12), who was
presiding over the Second Ecumenical Council, died in the
course of it, and St. Gregory was chosen in his stead; there he
distinguished himself in his expositions of dogmatic theology.

Having governed the Church until 382, he delivered his farewell

speech-the Syntacterion, in which he demonstrated the Divinity
of the Son—before 150 bishops and the Emperor Theodosius
the Great. Also in this speech he requested, and received from
all, permission to retire from the See of Constantinople. He
returned to Nazianzus, where he lived to the end of his life. He
reposed in the Lord in 391, having lived some sixty-two years.

His extant writings, both prose and poems in every type of

meter, demonstrate his lofty eloquence and his wondrous
breadth of learning. In the beauty of his writings, he is
considered to have surpassed the Greek writers of antiquity,
and because of his God-inspired theological thought, he
received the surname "Theologian." Although he is sometimes
called Gregory of Nazianzus, this title belongs properly to his
father; he himself is known by the Church only as Gregory the
Theologian. He is especially called "Trinitarian Theologian,"
since in virtually every homily he refers to the Trinity and the
one essence and nature of the Godhead.

GREGORY ROUSSIS (+2009)

The Confessor of the Orthodoxy

Late Metropolitan of Messinia, GREGORIOS (name in world

George Roussis) was born in 1923 in Piraeus but his native was
from Dodecanese islands. Since his childhood he has been
working for his survival while later he was studying at a
nocturnal department of the Commercial School of Piraeus. He
then studied at the School of Journalism and Hagiography.
At an early age, he abandoned the mundane and was
introduced to the historic Holy Despotic Monastery of the
Tranfugiration of the Lord in Kouvaras, having as his partner the
later Metropolitan of Thebes and Levadia Avramios Baltsakis
(+2005) and later he was ordained Deacon and Hieromonk by
the then Bishop of Vresthena and later Archbishop of Athens
Saint Matthew. Archbishop Gregory said that from the moment
that Saint Matthew called him (the Metropolitan especially
honored Matthew the Holy Confessor, who was also his
successor to the Archdiocese Throne) to join the clergy, he felt
a flame and love for the Church of Christ without he is now
interested in the mundane, even his parents.

On the Sunday of the "Akathist Hymn" of the year 1958, he

was ordained as Metropolitan of Messenia by the Holy
Hierarches of the Orthodox Church of Greece and the President
of the Holy Synod, Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, Dimitrios
(+1976), in the Holy Chapel of the Holy 99 Fathers of Crete.

When he arrived at his Metropolis there was an inconvenience

due to the 10-year persecution of the Orthodox. He was
imprisoned but eventually he was rightfully condemned. As
friend of the Monasticism, he reorganized the monasteries and
founded new ones. His great faith, his asceticism and his
insistence on the teaching of the spiritual life of the faithful
resulted in the spiritual acne and progress of the local Church of
Messinia.
In 2008 he completed 50 years of godly pastoral work in the
Holy Metropolis of Messinia, of which 15 as Archbishop of the
GOC. Since 1995 (after the removal of the Archbishop of Athens
and all Greece Andreas (+2005) from the Apostolic Throne of
Athens due to his involvement in the neo-iconoclastic schism)
he presided over the Holy Synod of the Church of the Orthodox
Christians of Greece as a First- Hierarch and served as Locum
Teenens of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens.

He was (and is) a great spiritual chapter for the Church of

Christ, as in great and historical moments of the Church of
Christ there he was, in joys and sorrows, keeping Orthodoxy
intact and genuine, preserving, as far as possible, the Church of
Christ from scandals and schisms of the Devil, preserving the
Genuine Apostolic Succession of the Church of Christ. A sample
of the humiliation that distinguished him, his repeated years of
denial of proclaiming him as Archbishop of Athens and all of
Greece because he "did not want prices" as he humbly said. A
sample of the Love of the Messinian people, the coverage of
the message to the Lord from all Messinian media (and all over
Greece) and the attendance of not only Orthodox Messenians
but also New Calendarists.

He was known for his great and extensive writing work (in the
context of indoctrination of the faithful and the inner mission)
and his iconographic talent in hagiography. He was simple,
ascetic and humble as a simple monk, fulfilling his monastic
duties despite his age and his heavy health. His last words were
to his Deacon, his spiritual relic: "HUMILIATION! HUMILIATION!
HUMILIATION!" He was indeed a Hierarch" in place and in type
of Christ".

NOW METROPOLITAN G.O.C. OF MESSINIA

Saint Hierarches, Fathers and brothers, dear brothers in Christ.

I do not know if I will be able to speech. I will try. I am not good
in speeches. Our spiritual father is ahead of us and he is not
talking anymore. Not only Father of the monastery and
Messenia, but of our entire Church, clergy and people. Now he
does not answer to give us advices, to solve our problems, with
a few words to give us a little spiritual food. Brothers ask me
now that we are alone “What do we do, now, that we are left
orphans?”. What to say? Where to ask? I have to answer, me a
sinner: “Please observe the instructions that he gave us, the
wise teaching and especially we have to remember the
example of his life”.

I remember one of the many commands that my Father gave

us. He said when you pronounce, be careful your speech not to
be wordy and too theology. You should speak in a simple
manner that could benefit souls. So I will try to speak a few
words about the life of our Father, who can benefit all of us.

The Holy Father had three great virtues. First great virtue was
his zeal for the monastic life. Second it was his love for the
world (of God) and the people. And thirdly it was the accurate
observance of Orthodoxy. The zeal which he had for monastic
life began with a spark. And what was this spark? He then goes
as a cosmic layman with a friend in Keratea. And his friend was
an Orthodox and he said him “Come here to see George the
monastery”. And as they walked there, in the monastery, they
see in a balcony Saint Father Matthew. And his friend says:
“Look up there is the Holy Father Matthew”. He put up his eyes,
he was watching the Holy Father and he throws down one little
komposchini (“Rosario”). This was in his hands, and
Metropolitan of Messenia told us, “Since Saint father Matthew
threw this komposchoini, I sense a flame in my soul, a flame to
become a monk, a flame to leave the Mother and my Father, to
leave my job, all the cosmic care and then nothing could stop
me”.

This torch was a great fire that burned trees and intact forests.
In the monastic life, which he was inherited from the Holy
Father, we hear everything and he told us his teachings. When I
was entering in the cell, I was seeing him to read the Bible and
other books and I say: “Your Eminence, what are you doing?”
“Oh Father Jacob, he said, the Holy Father had put as my canon
to read these things when I was a priest and I do so until today,
as a Metropololitan” And so he was! Always he was getting up
at 2 o'clock alone, to make the canon (monastic obligations)
and the spiritual tasks. And then he was coming at 3 o’ clock am
to start the Liturgy. Many times, we monks were asleep, we
were forgetting to strike the bell, but our Elder has always light
when he raised in his cell. I was always looking him doing his
komposchoinia (pray with Rosario), reading his prayer books.
Even he was ill and he was doing so. Always he was rising up to
do what he received from the Saint Father.

Once I came to the cell abruptly, he scared and he sat in the

chair. His breaths were short and steep. He could not speak and
I understand it that the older Gregory, while he was too old,
was doing genuflections (“metanihes” in greek) and I did not
know it my brothers. He did it secretly, and he sat in the chair
to avoid that I will understand his holy activity, but I see that he
could not breathe but he had not stopped ever what he
received, the zeal of monastic life.

[...] The komposchoini (Rosario) always, he had in his hand, my

brothers, was something like a third hand, he never lacked
from his hand. We went to his cell, he was doing komposchoini.
He walked outside he had a komposchoini in his hands. And
finally, his last complaint was, when we were in the hospital,
was: «Ah goodness! I cannot do my komposchoini. Oh Father
Jacob, bring me the komposchoini”. I went to Kalamata and I
brought the komposchini to the hospital. I Put in his hands, he
was trying, trying, but he could not because he was too ill ... His
cell was a Paradise. It was the sky. He was not coming often
outside. He was indeed a monk, yes, monk and more than a
monk. He was seating inside, in the cell to read and to make the
prayers.

[...] He was a simple monk, as all the monks, and our despot
had handiwork. We stopped and admired. We sometimes were
tired and did nothing. Despotas each day will make a sampler.
He was doing hagiographies, or wrote, or did wood sculptures.
Not only he had handiwork, but subsequently, my brothers, he
wrote books, he copied by the Holy Fathers various passages, to
give the benefits to the world. And he continued until the deep
old age, and he did not ever let the commitment. And he left
two endless projects. One contains an index for the “Holy
Rudder”, book of Saint Nicodemus, the canon law, work for us
Priests and Hierarches that will help us in our tasks. Another
includes excerpts from various sources and it is intended as a
dictionary to write a device from A to Z for the mentally and
physically diseased.

As a monk, who was, he had always the memory of death, my

brothers. Always he remembered the death. We were looking
at these last years him walking at the cemetery. When he was
coming out from the cell, first he was going to the cemetery, he
was looking at the memory and he said: “Oh, this one old lady,
this old one, we will go there”. And any time he said: “Where
will you put me (in which grave)?” I stood and left, I did not let
him finish.

A book that he loved and he put it in his soul is the “scale”

(“Klimaka”) of ascetic Saint John the Klimakos. He read the
book that he followed, it helps us to rule all fathers here and
we read every day, as a guide for the monks. How many times
have he read it, it is unknown. The last step of “Scale”, as you
know, is love. And brothers there, we read in the “Scale” and
we try to do all what it says, and he reached the last step of
love.

The second was the virtue of love, it could not be hidden.

When somebody came into him and only he saw his face, was
saying: What is he? They saw a holy person. His smile wins you.
By the sweet way that he was talking, like a magnet he was
pulling you that you cannot be separated. By his love, he had
great respect for all faithful, even for the New-calendarists,
even for atheists. All the region of Messenia, everyone, old,
young, said the best words for our Despot, and all loved him.

Although, brothers, despite the smile that had the sweetest in

his speech, where the matter was on faith, then he put out
sword and fire. Then, brothers, he spoke afterwards. Not for
Orthodoxy, but the genuine Orthodoxy. Which had its roots in
the Holy Father (Matthew), they continued, the Holy Father's
roots, he continued the exact Orthodoxy until his end, despite
the persecution that he suffered at times, which dragged him to
court and forced him to leave Athens. In his speech on matters
of Orthodoxy, was always in mind this; Minutes of the Seventh
Ecumenical Council: "Whosoever does not accept any of the
ecclesiastical traditions, written or unwritten, Anathema,
Anathema, Anathema."

[...] All these virtues, that he had as a monk, love, genuine

Orthodoxy, and others had but they lost them. But our despot
had one last virtue, without which, the first three it is nothing.
He had humiliation, brothers. He had a real humiliation. In the
Hospital that he was, he said the last words to his deacon.
What were the last words? What were his last words?
«Humiliation, humiliation, humiliation!». As humble Hierarch,
he did not want to wear a luxury. The nuns made him
vestments, good vestments and he did not wear them. He
worked as a sample monk, the buttons were elsewhere, lime
was here, colors were there, he had not care of clothing. He put
always his Eggolpio inside his clothes because he did not want
to know that he was a Bishop. He walked outside and everyone
wondering who this monk is“. I was saying, he is not a monk, he
is the Bishop”. The nuns and other people had given him as gift
various vestments. There were at least 12-15 uniforms. He did
not wear them. “What to do them?” he said. And he was
wearing only a vestment below and a second vestment which
was “good”. The first vestment is “melted” (because it was too
old). The nuns sew, darn but he wore this one, my brothers.
The same humble, he was in front of Priests and Bishops who
visited our monastery. «Tell you the sermon” he urged them.
He did not want to be first, or to show. And another, the last
that you have to know, brothers is that this humility was that
made him stubbornly refuse the office of the Archbishop,
although many people appreciate him: «Despota, come to
Athens to be our Archbishop, as Holy Father Matthew was. But
he answered: “No, I am good in my cell, in the exercise here,
here in my lovely Monastery».

This humiliation, brothers raised him. He did not like many

things, but he was raised. As you know, here in the parish is (a
faithful sister) Panayota who says various words in church and
shouting; “Patriarch Gregory”. Other laugh at her, others told
her to close her mouth, (but) she never closed it. Indeed, he
was Patriarch brothers. He deputizes all Patriarchates, brothers.
He was raised (by God) too much, brothers, despite the
humiliation that he wanted no publicity and no visibility he was
receiving letters from around the world and dozens of people
communicated with him by phone. He was known throughout
the world. He always wanted peace, brothers. And finally we as
children, when he reposed, did not mincing any, we called only
our three Metropolitans and all the priests and the sad news
was learned throughout Greece. They came from all parts of
Cyprus, Crete and from America. Not only Orthodox, but
subsequently New Calendar priests, nuns and secular came
from Kalamata (in hospital an in Holy Monastery). Until we
have reached the point to say them to go. All local, four
channels come (for the Gregory’s repose in monastery). How
they found it? We did not invited them, but man who always
humiliated, will raise. Newspapers’ journalists came to write for
our Despot. They put his repose in the first page. Buses came
from everywhere, the Mayor of Kalamata’s City, which is next
to us. We did not call, but he came, brothers, because late
Metropolitan Gregory’s grace had spread throughout the
Messenia.

I would like to say, brothers, that our despot who came

through the humiliation of being a small child died after having
finished his work on earth. He supported Orthodoxy, overtook
the schism, fighting the heresies, ordainment Hierarches, and
now it was the fullness of time and the Lord called him. Two
logisms always come to my mind; “What a gaud we have! What
a prostate! What a driver have! What joy we have!” But always,
when I read the Gospel, passage I remember this passage in
which Pharisees asked Christ, why your Apostles do not you
fast?” And Christ said: “Because is even here the Bridegroom”
(Christ). And I thought when our Bridegroom leave us we will
need prayer and fasting. Indeed, the Bridegroom left us our
brothers. And when he left? He has gone on Thursday, finishing
the first three days of Holy Fest. He left us in the fasting. The
Bridegroom our brothers, left the entire city of Kalamata sank
on Thursday in dense fog and heavy atmosphere. The sun is
dark. It did not happen an earthquake when he died, but the
next day, on Friday, began to rain and strong wind blows. The
stones are not broke, but broke our hearts.

We will continue with the wishes of his work and everything

that he left incomplete, we will finish. We will follow his
example. We observe his teachings and instructions. And we
will keep the line of the Holy Apostles, Holy Fathers, the Holy
Father Matthew’s line, the line that followed our Bishop untill
the end. And if we observe these brothers, he will not leave us
and his grace will cover us. Our Saint Father, we ask your
forgiveness for what we did, we are asking to pray for us, we
ask your blessing on us, always to cover and never leave us. I
thank everyone who helped Hierarches, priests, monks, and the
relatives in the world.

 Miracle of the Holy Cross to the mother of Gregory

Metropolitan of Messnia Gregory, when he was a layman,

met Holy Father Matthew (then Bishop of Vresthena) and
joined with fiery zeal in the Genuine Orthodox Church. After
the return of the young man, then George (his name in world)
from the Monastery of Keratea, met with his late mother. It
was the period of the German occupation, and the hunger had
dominated the Greek population, especially the cities. Gregory
found his desperate mother trying to brew bread, but the
dough did not bloom and the woman was overwhelmed. Many
people were dying of hunger at the time. She began to talk to
her about the Genuine Orthodoxy and the Patristic calendar,
but she interrupted him with indignation with her misfortune.
Then the late Gregory did not indignate, nor did he mute in the
face of their mother's lacklusterity, but he took out a Cross that
St. Matthew gave him and blessed the dough that did not
bloom in the baking dish. And the miracle happened! The
dough immediately began to overflow through the baking dish
and fall on the floor. The mother of the blessed memory First-
Hierarch began to cry for her unfaithfulness toward the most
precious God and provident of all. She repent and joined with
zeal in the Genuine Orthodox Church along with her family in
those difficult and black times for our homeland.

 HOW WE FAST
Great Lent before the Easter:
We eat oil and wine (It is meant Shellfish too) only every
Saturday and Sunday. On the Feast of the Annunciation
of Theotokos, we eat fish.
Fast of the Holy Apostles:
We eat wine and oil at Tuesday and at Thursday; on
Saturday and on Sunday, we eat fish.
Fast of the Dormition of the Mother of God:
We eat wine and oil only every Saturday and Sunday. On
the feast of the Transfiguration (6/8), we eat fish.
Fast of the Christmas:
We eat every Tuesday and every Thursday wine and oil,
on Saturday and on Sundays, we eat fish.
According to the Tradition, on the Christmas’ Fast we eat
Fish from the Entrance of the Theotokos (21/11) till the
feast of St Spyridon (12/12) (when it is on Weekend).

FAST ΟΝ EVERYTHING
January 4, August 29, September 14 and December 24.
Also, we do not eat at feasts on the Clean Week or the
Great one.
