Magnetic and gravity toolface are terms in directional drilling which are essential understand

to describe the direction of the well. They are different in meaning and application.

Magnetic Toolface Gravity Toolface

The magnetic toolface is an angle projection The gravity toolface or high-side toolface is
onto the horizontal plane between the tool used for a section of the well which has an
face and magnetic north. inclination more than 5 degree.
Typically, directional tools use the magnetic The high-side is the top of the hole
tool face when the inclination is less than 5 perpendicular to the wellbore axis and the
degree. The Figure 1 demonstrates that the low side is the bottom of the hole (Figure 2).
mud motor is lined up to kick off at 30 The tool is measure in relative to high-side
degree azimuth magnetic tool face.

NB: The bend is set before running the MudMotor, once downhole, it cannot be changed.
Toolface at 0 degree
it means that a mud motor is lined up to build
angle only but there is no change in azimuth.

Toolface at 180 degree

it means that a mud motor is lined up to drop

angle only but there is no change in azimuth.

Toolface at 90 degree
it means that a mud motor is lined up to turn
the right only but there is no change in
inclination.
Toolface at 270 degree
it means that a mud motor is lined up to turn
the left only but there is no change in
inclination.

Toolface at 45 degree
it means that a mud motor is lined up to turn
the right and build angle.

Toolface at 135 degree

it means that a mud motor is lined up to turn
the right and drop angle.
Toolface at 225 degree
it means that a mud motor is lined up to turn
the left and drop angle.

Toolface at 315 degree

it means that a mud motor is lined up to turn
the left and build angle.
