WINTER 2019 SHARON ART STUDIO 3
DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Decade and Dedication

by Matt Burns
Difficult to believe but we are entering 2019 and another decade is
closing. I took a few moments to think about where I was in 2009 and
what has happened for me and the world in the last 10 years. As
this past decade was starting, I was earnestly working on my MFA,
mastering the elements of art and studying the “schools”, “movements”
and other historical trends of fine art, as well as practicing to be a
good painter. I appreciate the best lesson I learned: to be good
at any art discipline, one first has to draw and draw and draw. It
informs everything else – good design, confident strokes, composition,
technique with value and form- all things we need whether we are
designing jewelry, throwing on a wheel or painting a landscape etc.
Can you imagine creating a glass window with minimal attention to
composition or shape? I digress.
In the past decade, I’ve experienced loss: colleagues, friends,
loved ones and acquaintances have gone to battle with diseases,
the elements, and sometimes, in politics, with each other. I’ve also
gained new colleagues, friends, loved ones and acquaintances and
experienced great gains in life. A big part of that is art and how it
helps us weather those tough moments and celebrate the nicer ones.
The world around us is always discovering and creating. Think of the
past decade and what has been created – everything from the rise
of bitcoin (still wrapping my head around that one) to flowing liquid
water found on Mars? And what about the discovery of cave paintings
in Indonesia, reportedly the oldest such art works dating over 39,900
years ago. This proves people were drawing long before we had
Priority Registration and the era of remembering passwords.
I plan to make some personal art goals in the next decade. I hope
you do too, and the Sharon Art Studio may help you achieve some of
them. A decade passes very quickly, but art remains, and those of us
who are stewards of the program hope you find some time to plan,
study, create and draw! Go to it.

GIVING TO THE STUDIO,A TESTIMONIAL

Why I Give and Encourage Others to Follow

by Rachael Van Schoik

I am a jewelry student, a contributor

to Friends of the Sharon Art Studio
(FOSAS), and a FOSAS Board
Member. As a student, I have seen
community being built around me as
I work on my projects. I hear people
chatting with each other, laughing,
sharing self-expression, and I see
important creative growth enrich
our lives. As a board member,
I have seen the impact of our
scholarship programs, an increase
with the diversity of classes, and the
strength of our community.
I donate to FOSAS because FOSAS
needs my support to help keep
our programs high quality and
our supplemental classes varied. I
believe in our mission to help keep
arts accessible and affordable.
Join me in giving to FOSAS to keep
our studio doors open wider.
Join me in giving, and giving
regularly.
Visit our website at www.sharonartstudio.org for more information.
And I hope to see you at our upcoming Annual Winter Student Sale
on December 2nd!
