PAST SIMPLE I

Past simple (regular verbs): affirmative

We use the past simple to describe finished events in the past.

Yesterday I watched a great film on TV.

It started at 8 pm and finished at 10 pm.

Regular verbs:
add –ed to form the past simple watch + ed

   I clean my teeth every morning. This morning I cleaned my teeth.

   Terry worked in a bank from 1981 to 1986.
   Yesterday it rained all morning. It stopped at lunchtime.
   We enjoyed the party last night. We danced a lot and talked to a lot of people. The party finished at midnight.

Spelling
One-syllable verbs: double the final consonant.
   fit – fitted
   stop – stopped

One-syllable verbs ending consonant + y: change y to i.

   cry – cried
   try – tried

One-syllable verbs ending vowel + y do not change.

   play – played
   stay – stayed

Two-syllable verbs: double the final consonant when the stress is on the last syllable.
   admit – admitted

Two-syllable verbs with the stress on the first syllable do not double the final consonant.
   answer – answered

Irregular verbs do not have –ed endings for the past simple. Each verb has its own form and we have to learn these
forms.
   go – went
   drink – drank
   eat – ate
   make – made
