Volunteer Service and Leadership
Through community service and leadership, I have developed skills and competencies that
support my ability as a philosophy student. My service roles have especially shaped and
informed my interests in ethics, particularly the areas of effective altruism, moral psychology,
and individuation of responsibility.

Since Refugee Economic Empowerment Program Developer | AmeriCorps VISTA


2018 U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants | Vermont Field Office
Conceived as the domestic “Peace Corps,” AmeriCorps VISTA is a yearlong commitment to
fighting poverty through capacity building. In my role, I support refugees from their arrival
at a U.S. airport through their first five years until they become self-sufficient. My roles are:
ϕ Conduct intake with interpreters to assess refugee education and employment histories
ϕ Coordinate 10+ English Language Learning classes and four citizenship classes
ϕ Recruit, train, and manage volunteers in the education department
ϕ Develop a computer literacy class
ϕ Develop employment workshops and offer employment counseling
ϕ Design and implement capacity-building projects
ϕ Monitoring and evaluation for grant compliance

Since Refugee ESL Tutor | Paper Airplanes


2016 Paper Airplanes is an e-learning nonprofit that mitigates the educational gap for Syrian
refugee students displaced by war. I have been working remotely with students displaced to
Turkey, guiding them through trauma-informed curriculum to:
ϕ Promote language and skills acquisition
ϕ Promote conflict resolution, tolerance, and respect for human rights
ϕ Increase the earning potential of students
ϕ Foster social cohesion and steer youth away from armed militant groups
ϕ Provide the skills and knowledge needed to rebuild tattered economic and physical
infrastructures

My courses and research on the Holocaust through the Pepperdine and the Glazer Scholars
Institute led me to delve further into Holocaust work. My internship at Yad Vashem and my
job at the Museum of Tolerance occasioned many opportunities to reflect on philosophy
topics ranging from transmission of testimony, legitimacy of political or epistemic authority,
individuation of responsibility, moral psychology, religious diversity, peer disagreement, and
more. These experiences have contributed to my philosophical development.
