Marin Agricultural Land Trust

YEAR IN REVIEW 2002–2003

Preserving Marin County Farmlands

Dear Members and Friends
The past year was bittersweet for Marin Agricultural Land Trust. Last November we lost Ellen Straus, and in July Ellen’s husband Bill passed
away. It is impossible to overstate the importance of Ellen and Bill to malt, in every phase of its life. From the initial vision that a private
organization could play a meaningful role in the preservation of agriculture in Marin County, to the extraordinary success malt has achieved over
its first 23 years, Ellen’s tireless efforts, her unflagging optimism, and her ability to project enthusiasm and commitment to others were essential
constants in malt’s growth. To perpetuate Ellen’s vision, we have renamed the fund through which we do all of our conservation easement projects
the Ellen Straus Farmland Preservation Fund. We will miss Ellen and Bill deeply, but their vision will continue to inspire us for years to come.
On the sweet side, every conservation easement project is a milestone, and this year we completed two, bringing the total of farmland permanently
protected for agriculture to more than 32,000 acres. The acquisition of an easement on the 307-acre Zimmerman Ranch in Marshall overlooking
Tomales Bay made possible the transfer of the property to the next generation. malt also purchased an easement on the 208-acre Leiss Ranch close
to Petaluma and the Marin-Sonoma County line, permanently protecting it from subdivision and non-agricultural development. Both reflect our
continuing progress in protecting Marin’s agricultural landscape, and the enduring commitment of these families to their land and farming heritage.
While agriculture here, as elsewhere, faces challenges from rising land values and the globalization of production and markets, a truly exciting
trend is the diversification taking place on local farms and ranches. From organic row crops to grass-fed beef to value-added products like
farmstead cheese, malt has encouraged this trend by co-sponsoring with UC Cooperative Extension and Marin Organic a series of well-
attended workshops for producers interested in learning about farming and marketing options.
Malt has long understood the importance of public support not only to agricultural land conservation, but also to the future of agriculture
itself. Seven years ago we created education and communications departments. We initiated a small offering of hikes, tours, and special events to
let the public sample products of Marin’s farms and ranches and to get to know the owners and producers. This year we completed a strategic plan
for education which acknowledged its importance to the future of agriculture in Marin and set goals to increase our capacity for connecting land
and people. We also prepared our first marketing plan to highlight in a broader geographic area malt’s support of the tradition and the future of
Marin agriculture. This effort continues in a series of credits about malt airing on kqed-fm and completely underwritten by a generous donor.

We now have before us more opportunities to preserve land than at any time in our history, and the greatest challenge we have ever faced to
obtain the funding necessary to complete these projects. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our members and donors, whose support
sustains and encourages us. We are confident that with your continued partnership, we will be able to preserve the agricultural land that is such
an important part of the heart and soul of this place that is so dear to all of us.
Thank you.

Easement Acquisition and Stewardship
Malt was the first agricultural land trust in the United States. By offering landowners a conservation alternative to the sale or development
of their farm property, malt has permanently protected more than 32,000 acres that might otherwise have been sold or subdivided. This year
we purchased conservation easements on the Leiss Ranch in Chileno Valley and the Zimmerman Ranch in Marshall, and we are pushing ahead
on several easement projects we hope to complete by the end of 2003.
Our ability to continue this successful program hinges on our having funds available to meet the cost of an easement as determined by an
independent appraisal. Until 1998, malt had a steady source of easement funding available through Proposition 70, passed by California voters
in 1988. By 1998, those dollars were mostly depleted, and we turned to a capital funding strategy that raised $10 million. Currently, the goal
of the easement program is to leverage, to the greatest extent possible, private and public money.
This year, for the first time in malt’s history an easement was funded entirely through grants from the California Coastal Conservancy and
the California Department of Conservation’s California Farmland Conservancy Program. We secured almost $700,000 from these two agencies.
Approximately $2.3 million dollars more in public agency grants for projects to be completed in fiscal year 2003-2004 havd already been
approved.

But challenges to the landscape and to agricultural productivity continue to present themselves long after conservation easement acquisitions
are completed. Noxious weeds and soil erosion, for example, can profoundly impact the land’s ability to support agriculture as well as native plants
and wildlife.
To meet these ongoing challenges, malt must maintain a vigorous stewardship program. A primary objective is to fulfill the legal responsibilities
malt accepts as easement holder. Visiting protected ranches annually and archiving reports and photographs have become significant efforts
as we’ve grown. Equally important is our commitment to maintaining excellent relationships with those who own and continue to manage
the ranches. Toward this end, malt’s annual Landowner Dinner was initiated three years ago to show appreciation for those who have protected
their property under malt easements. The dinner is highly regarded by the agricultural community and was completely underwritten this year
by a generous malt member through The Community Fund of the Marin Community Foundation.
Malt continues to support sound management on easement-protected ranches by consulting regularly with landowners, sponsoring seminars and
workshops, and providing a vital stream of information on management issues. Through the Stewardship Assistance Program, a grant program
initiated two years ago with funds raised in the capital campaign, malt allocated $24,890 in the past fiscal year to protect over a mile of creek and
riparian areas and several springs that are important water sources for both livestock and wildlife. Four additional grants totaling $53,000 have
been approved for 2003-04.
Through our easement acquisition and stewardship programs, West Marin landowners and malt supporters cooperate to safeguard a bountiful
harvest and a healthy landscape.

Education and Outreach
Malt’s Education Department has been building relationships between the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors of our community for
the past seven years because we believe that to preserve farmland in active agriculture, we must also preserve people’s connections to the land.
This year, along with ranchers, growers, and producers, we welcomed more than 3,000 people to 35 hikes, ranch tours, and talks.
By nurturing people’s relationship to the land, we can help keep the land healthy and productive for generations to come. This means teaching
communities about the social, environmental, and scenic values enhanced by our family farms. It means educating consumers about the importance
of buying local products so farmers can stay in business. And it means connecting our children with the wonders of agriculture so they grow up to
be adults who will support Marin farms.
Malt volunteers have played a critical role in making these links. They contribute generously in many ways and also have made their own
personal connections with the land, the farmers and ranchers, and with each other. These associations help them become a powerful community
of advocates for family farms.
Under a new strategic plan for education developed this year, we hope to give more adults and children the opportunity to visit farms and
learn about local agriculture. We also hope to partner with a wider variety of organizations and community groups to get our message out to
other sectors of the Bay Area community.
Nurturing the next generation of land stewards is the shared goal of two collaborative projects in which malt participates. While the goals
of the Marin Agricultural and Education Alliance (maea) and the Marin Food Systems Project (mfsp) overlap, their activities differ.
In June, maea hosted the 5th annual Marin Summer Agricultural Institute for teachers and has now connected more than 130 teachers with
farms and the curricular materials needed to teach students about their connections to food and farming. New this year was the Marin Farm
Field Studies Program which allowed some 300 students to experience farms and be awed by the size of Holstein cows or eat fresh green beans
straight from the field.
The mfsp is working with schools to pass and implement policies that integrate curricular connections to local agriculture, environmental
education, garden-based ecological lessons, nutrition, and healthy school food. In the last year, two more school food policies were passed and
schools moved closer countywide to involving parents, teachers, food service directors, and school nurses in an ongoing dialogue to connect schools
to local farms and fresh food.
In the year ahead, as we work to protect farmland for future generations through the purchase of conservation easements, malt also will
continue to act as an incubator for innovative and effective programs that encourage agricultural literacy, raise awareness of local farming,
and encourage healthy relationships between people and the land.

Since its founding in 1980, malt has led the way in farmland preservation in the United States. malt’s success has been the result of inspiration
on the part of its founders and dedication on the part of those who have followed in their footsteps. In addition, supportive individual donors
and enlightened public funders have enabled malt to meet the increasing financial challenges of high land costs. We gratefully acknowledge
here the Guardians, Stewards, Benefactors, Patrons, Sponsors, Businesses, and Corporate donors who have made contributions to malt during
the 2002-2003 fiscal year. In addition we extend our appreciation to each of our other supporters, whose names are too numerous to list. Our
thanks also go to those who let us know they have remembered malt in their estate plans as Partners for Preservation and to the Marin
Community Foundation for a core program operating grant.

Marin Agricultural Land Trust
is a private, member-supported nonprofit organization created
in 1980 by a coalition of ranchers and environmentalists to
permanently preserve Marin County farmland for agricultural
use. Malt eliminates the development potential on farmland
through the acquisition of conservation easements in
voluntary transactions with landowners. Malt also promotes
public awareness and encourages policies which support and
enhance agriculture.

On the cover: Sunshine Trio by Randall Sexton, one of the

participating artists in Ranches & Rolling Hills, a show and sale
of landscape art to benefit MALT and the preservation of Marin
County farmlands. The seventh annual art show will take place
on May 15 & 16, 2004, at the Druid’s Hall in Nicasio.
