Essential Standard/Common Core Objective:
Performance- Students will be able to answer inquiry-based questions after reading a nonfiction articles/books. They will
also be able participate in classroom discussions.
Conditions- Students will have access to Chromebooks, google class, scanned workbook, paper, and pencil. They will
be able to have partner talk and group discussions.

Prior Knowledge:
Prerequisite skills and concepts are clearly articulated, complete and are correct for the stated lesson objective(s).
Students will need to understand the context of what they are reading. Students will also need to understand
how to use context clues and different strategies to find the theme of a story. Students will also have to know
there were indigenous people in North America before the settlers came over.
Activity Description
“Good morning guys. Do you remember how you just finished our unit
on theme?” students reply with yes or no. “Great! Remember how we
used context clues and our different strategies to figure what the
theme of our passages were? Wonderful! Who can tell me a strategy
they know?” Students raise hands to reply. “Okay so we are going to
be reading nonfiction pieces this unit. Can anyone tell me what
nonfiction means?” Students raise hands to reply and we discuss
their answers. “So, if nonfiction means a writing that is based on

10 points what does fiction mean?” Students raise hands to reply and we
discuss their answers. “Okay so we know fiction is a short story or
novel, that describes imaginary events and people. So an inference is
an observation where we figure out based on an experiences and
clues from the story what the author wants us to know without directly
saying it.” (Helping students understand when information is implied,
or not directly stated, will improve their skill in drawing conclusions
and making inferences)

On the front board under ELA standards I will write “You will be able
to refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text
says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text”

While I have the workbook scanned pages on the board and we will
read aloud and taking turns as we go along and using audio and
visual learning styles. I will have the students using their tactile and
visual skills when we answer the questions under the story and
practice their 3 column chart as are working
