UN YOUTH GLOBALISATION TOUR 

DELEGATION 2019 
 
BOKYONG MUN (Co-Director) 
LLB(Hons)/BSc (Chemistry and Geography) 
University of Otago 
 
Bokyong  has  just  finished  her  fourth  year  of  a  Law  and  Science 
degree  in her hometown Dunedin. In 2018 she also served as UN 
Youth’s  National  President,  and  has  been  volunteering  for  UN 
Youth  ever  since  leaving  High  School.  In  2017  Bokyong  also 
received  a  New  Zealand  Youth  Award  for  her  contribution  to 
youth  engagement.  Throughout  University  Bokyong  has  also 
received  the  Leaders  of  Tomorrow  Scholarship  as  well  as  an 
academic scholarship in Law.  
 
Bokyong  is  interested  in  environmental  sustainability  and 
technology,  and  took  part  in  the  Plastic  Bottle Kayak  Expedition, 
as  well  as  a Blake Ambassadorship with the Sir Peter Blake Trust. 
She  is  also  passionate  about  community  engagement,  having 
been  a  Youth  Member  of  Parliament,  the  local  Youth  Advisory 
Group, a Project Leader for the Otago Access Radio and Co-organiser of a Community Mural.  
 
Bokyong  hopes  to  gain  a  multicultural  perspective  and  interdisciplinary  understanding  of  some  of  the 
biggest  issues  that  are  being  faced  currently.  She  believes  that  an  understanding  of  areas  such  as 
economics, trade or international relations is fundamental to being able to provide a critical voice.  
 
JONAH TAN (Co-Director) 
MArch(Prof) Masters in Architecture (Professional) 
University of Auckland 
 
Jonah  completed  his  Bachelor  of  Architecture  Studies  (BAS)  in 
2017  and  is  not  going  into  his  final  thesis  year  of  his  Masters  in 
Architecture  MArch(Prof)  at  the  University  of  Auckland.  He  has 
been  a  volunteer  with  UN  Youth  for  4  years  now  with  an 
additional  2  years  prior  to  that  as  a  participant  in  high  school. 
This  has  included  being  a  part  of  the  New Zealand Delegation to 
The  Hague  International  Model  UN  in  The  Netherlands  in  2015. 
In  2018,  Jonah  has  been  the  National  Communications  Officer, 
looking  after  social media and branding for UN Youth. Outside of 
the  organisation  Jonah  plays  a  multitude  of  sports.  Tennis, 
Volleyball  and  Netball  are  his  main  passions,  having  played  at 
representative  level  within  the  Auckland  and  North  Harbour 
regions.  His  proudest  moment  came  recently  though  when  he 
represented  NZ  for  Netball  at  the  Trans  Tasman  Cup  this  past 
October.  
 
Jonah  hopes  to  see  how  New  Zealand  as  a  small  nation  relates  to  the  larger  Asia  region,  in  a  widely 
globalised  community.  He  has  a  particular  interest  in  the  production  and  manufacturing  of  goods, 
hoping to gain a more informed perspective on where things come from.  
 
MARK HOWARD​ (​ Head Delegate) 
LLB/BA (Education) 
University of Auckland 
 
In  his  third  year at university, Mark is driven, in his studies and in 
the  Globalisation  Tour,  by  a  desire  to  learn  how  Aotearoa  can 
foster  an  engaging  and  equitable  educational  culture  that  will 
inspire  our  future  learners  to  pursue  goals  of  international 
benefit.  His  greatest ambition in life is to cement New Zealand as 
a global leader in education and empowering pedagogy. 
 
Mark  believes  that  the  University  of  Auckland  has  shaped  this 
goal,  cultivating  both  the  passion  and  skills  he  needs  to  see  it 
become  a  reality.  As  a  long  term  UN  Youth  volunteer  and  the 
Deputy  Chairperson  of  the  Albany  Senior  High  School  Board  of 
Trustees,  Mark  actively  shares  his  experiences  with  high  school 
students  by  encouraging  them  to  pursue  further  study  at  the 
University.  Mark  is  looking  forward  to three more years of study, 
including  a  Graduate  Diploma  in  Secondary  Teaching,  through 
which  he  will  explore  deeper  aspects  of  global  and  indigenous  educational  theories.  Mark  says:  “The 
Globalisation  Tour  will  supplement  this  through  providing  multicultural  perspectives  on  the  role  of 
education that will challenge my subconscious biases and bring increased vigour to my future studies.” 
 
 
 
IRI EDWARDS 
BCom (Economics and International Business) 
University of Auckland 
 
Since  beginning  university  in  Semester  1,  2018,  Iri  has  been 
actively  involved  in  university  life,  becoming  a  First  Year 
Executive  Member  on  the  Commerce  Association  for  Maori 
Pacific  Students,  participating  in  the  Business  102  Accelerate 
Programme  and  Passport  2  Business,  and  acting  as  the  class 
representative for Economics 151. 
 
Iri  became  Deloitte’s  youngest  employee  in  New  Zealand  at  the 
age  of  18. Her plans for next year include continuing her position 
as a consultant in the Tax and Private teams, working to close the 
gap  between  women  and  MPI  demographics  in  the  corporate 
workplace  and  promoting  global  citizenship,  the  rights  to 
education  and  human  welfare.  Ir  was  recently  nominated  as  a 
Women  of  Influence  finalist  in  the  Westpac  Women  of  Influence 
awards  and  she  hopes  to  use  the  resources  and  relationships 
from that experience, as well as the Globalisation Tour, to meet her present and future goals. 
 
 
 
 
 
NATHALIE EDWARDS 
BA (Politics and Security Studies) 
Massey University 
 
In  her  second  year  at  university,  Nathalie  is  enjoying  her studies 
at  Massey  University,  Albany  campus  as  she  has the opportunity 
to  use  a  critical  lens  to  look  at  global  issues  and  the  potential 
ways  in  which  we  can  fix  them.  Nathalie  is  an  active  member  of 
the  Massey  Boxing  Club,  the  Massey Politics Club and volunteers 
with the Albany Students Association. 
 
Next  year,  her  final  year  as  an  undergraduate  student,  Nathalie 
looks  forward  to  continuing  to  learn  and  put  into practice all the 
information  that  she  has  gained  through  the  Globalisation  Tour, 
as well as deciding on a Masters’ topic and planning her future. 
 
 
 
VIRGINIA HOGAN 
BSc (Environmental Science and Environmental Management) 
Lincoln University 
 
Virginia  is  in  her  second  year at Lincoln University. She considers 
herself  very  lucky  to  study  in  an  ever-developing  field  of 
Environmental  Science  and  Environmental  Management  in  a 
passionate  place  at  Lincoln  University.  She has never considered 
any  other  universities  before  Lincoln  and  it  has proven to be the 
exactly  where  she  needs  to  be.  After  taking  a  gap  year  (and  a 
half)  in  the  United  Kingdom,  Virginia  realised  she  took  New 
Zealand’s  unique  environment  for  granted.  She  saw  some 
amazing  places  and  it  became  obvious  to  her  that  the 
environment  was  a  passion  for  her  in  all  forms,  especially  New 
Zealand’s. 
 
This  has  led  Virginia  to  grasp  all  opportunities  offered  to  her  by 
the  University,  attending  a  Rotary  Youth  Leadership  course, 
being  a  class  representative,  joining  the  Lincoln  Environmental 
Organisation  (LEO)  and  becoming  a  member  of  Flock,  which 
involves  voicing  ideas  to  create  new  experiences  and  initiatives  for  students.  In  the  near  future,  she 
hopes  to  join  the  Lincoln  Rotaract  Club,  and  apply  to  because  a  student  representative  for the Lincoln 
University  Students’  Association.  She is also currently looking for a volunteer or summer internship role 
to gain new skills in her future environmental career. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
   

 
NATHAN HOTTER 
BA (Political Science, International Relations and Chinese) 
Victoria University of Wellington 
 
Nathan  is  a  second-year  student  who  received  a  Victoria 
Excellence  Scholarship  in  2017  and  is  actively  involved  at  the 
University.  He  volunteers  for  UN  Youth,  is  an  executive  member 
of  the  Arts  Society,  participates  in  the  Victoria  International 
Leadership  Programme  and  is  a  class  representative  for  CHIN 
102.  In  addition,  he  has  represented  the  University  and  New 
Zealand  overseas  in  the  Oxford  Summer  Programme  on 
Geopolitics  and  International Affairs, the Harvard National Model 
United  Nations  and  the  8​th  Model  Asia  Europe  Meeting  in 
Myanmar.  In  particular,  he  raised  awareness  of  the  University’s 
brand  at  the  Oxford  Summer  Programme by being the only New 
Zealander there. 
 
Next  year,  Nathan  intends  to  continue  his  studies  and  go  on  an 
exchange programme to Peking University in Semester 2. 
 
 
 
 
DINUKI KARUNASEKERA 
LLB/BA (Economics and Politics & International Relations) 
University of Auckland 
 
In  her  second  year  at  university,  Dinuki  volunteers  in  a  great 
number  of  capacities.  She  works  at  the  Waitemata  Community 
Law  Centre,  where  she  is  part  of  a  diverse community and helps 
to  provide  legal  aid.  She  is  also  a  Style  Editor  for  the  Public 
Interest  Law  Journal,  and  gives  academic  guidance  and  pastoral 
care  to  first-year  students  as  an  Arts  Mentor.  In  addition,  Dinuki 
is  an  Academic  Mentor  and  is  part  of  the  student-led  charity, 
Educating Girls Globally. 
 
Upon  returning  from  the  Globalisation  Tour,  Dinuki  hopes  to 
further  pursue  her  studies  and  to  continue  developing  a  global 
perspective  academically.  She  also  plans  to  become  more 
involved  in  both  the  University  and  the  wider  community  by 
becoming  a  mentor  for  refugee  students,  becoming  more 
involved  in  her  local  community  and  council,  and  continuing her 
role as a Community Law Centre volunteer. 
   

 
HARMAN KAUR 
BBus (Economics and International Business) 
Auckland University of Technology 
 
Harman  has  been  a  student  ambassador  at  Auckland  University 
of  Technology  since  she  started  university  in  February 2017. She 
also  helps  monitor  the  employability  social  media  pages, 
volunteers  for  the  Auckland  University  of  Technology  Students’ 
Association,  and  helps  out  with  general  events  and  in  the  South 
Campus.  In  addition,  Harman  has  participated  in  the 
Management Consulting Club and Economics Society. 
 
Harman  plans  to  graduate  in  2019  and  complete  her 
Co-operative  Education  overseas.  She  will  also  travel  to  India  to 
attend  two  family  weddings  and  tick  a  few  items  off  her  bucket 
list, such as the Taj Mahal. 
 
 
 
 
HALEY MCKAY 
BA (Education and Politics) 
Massey University 
 
Hayley  is  a  third-year  student  who studies extramurally because 
the  flexibility  distance  study  provides  compliments  her  life 
outside  university  more  effectively.  Despite  this,  Hayley 
contributes  to  the  distance  community  through  many  online 
forums  and  through  working  part  time  at the Massey Kids’ Club, 
Childcare Centre, Palmerston North campus.  
 
Upon  returning  from  the  Globalisation  Tour,  Hayley  plans  to 
graduate,  apply  for  the  Graduate  Diploma  in  Teaching  course 
and  finally  begin  her  journey  towards  becoming  a  primary 
school teacher. 
 
   

 
OULAYKHAM SIPHANDONE 
BBus (Economics and International Business) 
Auckland University of Technology 
 
Oulaykham  is  a  second-year  international  student  from  Laos. 
Since  her  early  teenage  years,  she has been driven by languages, 
culture  and  international  affairs,  and  has  involved  herself  in 
those  field  by  travelling  and  participating  in  extra-curricular 
activities,  including  extra  language  classes.  Oulaykham  has 
interned  at  the  United  Nations  Development  Programme, 
participated  at  the  23​rd  Conference  of  Parties  to  the  United 
Nations  Framework  Convention  on  Climate  Change,  and  speaks 
fluent Lao, English, French and Thai, as well as some Mandarin.  
 
Having  those  passions,  Oulaykham  has  applied  for  the 
Globalisation  Tour  to  better  understand  Asia’  economy, 
encounter  new  people  and  learn  new  experiences.  She  sees  the 
Tour  as  a  once-in-a-lifetime  opportunity  that  will  not  only 
broaden  her  knowledge  and  perspective  of  the  world  but  also 
enable  her  to  use  the  knowledge  and  experience  gained  in  the 
development of her country in the forthcoming years. 
 
 
 
HOLLY SUTICH 
BCom (Public Relations)/BBus (International Business and Marketing) 
Auckland University of Technology 
In  her  fourth  year  at  university,  Holly  facilitates  a  9-week 
entrepreneurship  programme  at  Auckland  University  of 
Technology  called  Co.Starters,  and  is  passionate  about  helping 
others’  ideas  come  to  life  through  concept  validation. Holly loves 
the  innovative  ecosystem  in  New  Zealand  and  is  involved  in  her 
own  start-up,  where  she  hopes  to  revolutionise  the  way  people 
consume  energy  drinks,  with  a  truly  healthier  alternative  that 
gives  back  to  the  community  through  donations  to 
environmental initiatives in New Zealand. 
 
Holly  is  also  extremely  interested  in  international  relations  and 
sits  on  the  US-NZ  Youth  Council,  learning  more  about  the 
American-New  Zealand international relationship. Holly is also on 
the  Board  of  Trustees  of  Recreate  NZ,  an  amazing  charity  that 
provides  life-changing  experiences for youth with disabilities, and 
is  very  passionate  about  giving  back  to  the  community.  She 
spends her extra time reading, tramping and playing netball. 
 
Next  year,  Holly  hopes  to  significantly  grow  her  knowledge  into  the  world  of  Asia-Pacific  business  and 
political  relations,  and  feed  this  back  into  the  New  Zealand  ecosystem.  She  also  hopes  to  launch  her 
start-up business and continue to actively volunteer in her community. 
 
   

 
VAIOLA TAUTI 
BGlobalSt (Global Politics and Human Rights) 
University of Auckland 
 
Vaiola is deeply passionate about her studies and anticipates her 
programme  of  studies  to  shape  her  skills  and  knowledge  as  a 
competent  global  citizen,  who  can  make  a  difference  to  our 
increasingly  globalised  world.  The  Pacific  Islands  is  the  primary 
focus  of  her  studies,  as  she  wants  to deepen her understanding 
of Pacific cultures and perspectives. 
 
Vaiola  has  contributed  in  her  university  life  through  UN  Youth, 
LabourNesia  and  Amnesty  International.  These  commitments 
foster  vision,  leadership,  integrity,  diversity  and  accountability. 
Vaiola  has  developed  her  skills  by  actively  involving  herself  in 
activities and events that empower her community. 
 
In  the  future,  Vaiola  plans  to  prioritise  her  studies  and  extend 
her  involvement  in  the  organisation  she  is  currently part of. She 
also  foresees  engaging  in  ethno-sociolinguistic  groups  more  actively  in  her  community.  She  wants  to 
step  into  leadership  roles  to  challenge  and  empower  others  to  reach  beyond  their  capability  in  every 
area  of  their  lives,  to  not  only  encourage  living  a  sustainable  lifestyle,  but  also  to  raise  awareness  on 
social issues that affect our well-being globally. 
 
 
 
 
SAMANTHA WOOD 
LLB/BA (Political Science and International Relations) 
Victoria University of Wellington 
 
Originating  from  Gisborne,  Samantha  is  a  third-year  student 
who  is  passionate  about  civics  education  in  New Zealand. She is 
an  intern  for  Labour  MP  Kiritapu  Allan  and  volunteers  actively 
for  UN  Youth.  In  the  lead  up  to  the  2017  general  election, 
Samantha  started  a  Project  Civics  campaign  to  educate  high 
school  students  about  voting  and  politics.  She  also  works  three 
jobs. 
 
In  2019,  Samantha will complete her penultimate year of studies 
and  continue  to  work  on  developing  civics education in the New 
Zealand  curriculum.  In  the  further  future,  hopes  to  work  at  all 
levels  of  the  Government:  locally  (in  Gisborne),  nationally  and 
internationally.
