The teacher occupies the center stage in a learning environment. She shines in a
number of roles – teaching, managing, leading and facilitating and more importantly motivating
and inspiring children. No single teacher is proficient in all, since one may be good in managing
but not as capable in other chores.
The teacher brings forth into the teaching profession a wealth of knowledge and skills,
complimented by her set of values and attitudes. A teacher possessing this attributes merits the
high esteems of everyone.

“MY PERSONAL QUALITIES AS A STUDENT TEACHER”
ANGELYCA JOY TAMAYO
Being a student teacher, I have so many experiences in the field that sometimes I can
ask myself if I will truly finish my studies and pursue my teaching profession. I also ask myself if I
have already possessed such qualities on how to be a good teacher someday. Those kind of
question are always trigger on my mind every time I am on the field.
But on the other hand, I find myself already answered those question of mine. And it’s a
big YES. Yes, I will continue my studies to become a successful teacher someday. No matter how
difficult it is or no matter how hard the challenges it may be.
To be a good student teacher, you have to possess some of the qualities that can reflect
you to be a good teacher someday. As I reflect on my personal qualities as a student teacher, I
can use my personal qualities in some ways. I read all the materials they’ve been given about
teaching prior to entering the classroom. I am being more open to criticism. I do my background
research to find out about the school in advance. I make only 5 to 6 set rules. I talk to the
teacher who is responsible for overseeing what I’m doing. I stay natural. I move around. I
respect the students as well as the teachers and also my fellow student teacher.
My personal qualities can reflect myself for who I am. Being a married woman and a
mother as well as a student, it is not an easy task to do a job at the same time. But I learned how
to manage my precious time for my family and for my studies. I do not want my time wasted in
some activities that does not really important.
It is nice to be a good teacher, however be not content because you can be more than if
you wish to. I can tell to myself, that, if I can be a good teacher then surely I can be “one of the
best teachers. The best teacher that can help the students to think out the answer for
themselves, a teacher who know how to be quiet and patient while his students struggle to
formulate their own thoughts in to their own words. A teacher who respect the feelings of his
students that they are naturally more important than a silly old subject, a teacher who know
that responsibility, honesty and good citizenship cannot be taught in a course because such
25
qualities are communicated through daily actions not daily lectures. I hope someday when I
Page
An excellent teacher is not just someone who explains. Not someone who just
demonstrates. An excellent teacher is someone who inspires. An excellent teacher goes the extra
mile. They can take any individual and make them believe, truly believe, that their hopes and dreams
are within their reach. An excellent teacher will not let a student walk away until every question is fully
explained and completely understood, no matter how long it may take. If the day ends and the student
still have not understood the lesson plan, an extraordinary teacher would brainstorm. He or she would
think, “How can I explain this concept to the student so that he or she can better understand it?” I
intend on being that type of teacher.
The chance to inspire another human being is not an opportunity it’s a challenge. There are too
many educators that haven’t accepted this challenge, and it needs to change. Students go to school
because they are forced to. Many times learning is not their top priority, but the teacher’s job is to
teach. Students are always learning. Unfortunately, it just may not be what the teacher is teaching.
Since this is the case, a teacher must not only know his or her content area, they must also be prepared
to teach other “things”. Things, such as character, morals, etc., which may prove to be more valuable
than knowledge itself. This is the reason I want to become a teacher…. I want to inspire the children
who will represent the future of our great nation.

“MY PERSONAL QUALITIES AS A STUDENT TEACHER”
Teaching is a challenging task. One shall perform his duty with the highest degree of excellence,
professionalism, intelligence, skill, and with utmost devotion and dedication to ensure the quality of
education. It is also the noblest profession. A teacher carries numerous responsibilities. Her task is not
just simply delivering the lesson inside the four corners of the classroom but rather serves as the
second parent of the students and therefore loves and cares for her students like her real children. A
guidance counselor, that whenever her students commit mistakes, a teacher makes the students realize
their wrongdoings. Sometimes, she even serves as charity worker to her students, when she meets
students who are less fortunate in terms of living, students who would go to school without taking their
breakfast, without baon, without fare, but still persistent in finishing studies . With this kind of student,
a teacher could never close her eyes but would willingly extend help. The only reward a teacher hopes
or expects from these students is for them to finish studies and more-to be able to get a good job and
earn a living on their own in the future.
It is said that all professionals with different fields of studies came from the hands of a very
simple mentor...with these thoughts in my mind and despite the fact that being a teacher is very taxing;
still, I am proud of being one.
As an educator, I strongly believe that nurturing and nourishing all students must be my utmost
concern. I dream of students whose fullest potentials are developed to make them become responsible
citizens. They must be properly taught to read, write and speak both English and Filipino. They must use
these languages as an avenue for self-improvement and community building. They must know how to
process ideas, compute numbers, solve problems, apply concepts, and make decisions for themselves to
make them empowered learners. They must be students who are always hungry for knowledge, seeking
truths and facts of life for them to give meaning for their existence. They must be valued as persons
whose ideas, thoughts, perceptions, views and beliefs are essential for him and for others. They must be
immersed to the complexities and realities of life so that they would be able to survive and continue
living and valuing life. They must be regarded as God’s precious gift whose life is essential for his school,
family and community. I can only do these, by making them the heart of the operation of the school
where the program and projects are students-centered.
28
Page
“MY PERSONAL QUALITIES AS A STUDENT TEACHER”
My choice to become a teacher was not made lightly. This decision was a culmination of a
process of reflection about what I wanted to do with my life. I have chosen a career in education
because I believe that it is one of the most important functions performed in our culture. I believe that
teachers individually and collectively have the ability to not only change the world, but to improve
it. Within the process of teaching, I hope to find both personal and professional renewal. I want to be a
part of a noble profession with the hope of one day being counted among those in whom future
teachers find inspiration.
Many of the great teachers that I have had throughout my education have become my heroes
and role models. I began to understand in high school and college that great teachers have skills that I
wanted to learn. I want to follow their examples. I remember that great teachers were good at
explaining content, were patient yet firm with students, were always fair, set high expectations, knew
how to motivate, and used humor appropriately. They were great communicators who had a command
of their subject matter content. This is the type of teacher that I intend to become. However, I
understand that my personal teaching style will evolve as I draw on my own strengths, knowledge, skills,
values, and experiences.
I want children to learn in a safe and comfortable environment so that their self-esteem will be
increased. A high self-esteem will enable them to strive for and accomplish any goals they set for
themselves. As a teacher, I will play a part in helping them to do that. I will have the privilege of shaping
future parents and productive members of society. For all of these reasons, I ask myself, what better job
could there be. My answer is none because teaching is more than a job. It is an important contribution I
can make to better our society, and I am excited about the opportunity to do so.
Why do I want to become a teacher? A teacher has the direct opportunity to make a difference, to
change the future. I have been told that I am an idealist. I want the best for everyone. I will set high
goals as a teacher and do my best to show each and every student that these goals are within their
reach. I will expect every one of my students to want to learn and more importantly to understand. I
want to make my students wonder; make them question; make them think critically; make them write;
make them read, read, read.

PERSONAL QUALITIES OF AN EXPERIENCED TEACHER: A PERSONAL ENCOUNTER
“A WELL-ROUNDED TEACHER”
Teachers need to first become well rounded people in order to become more effective
professionals. Everybody thinks should know their subject very well, but sometimes, this is not
enough? Teachers should have some characteristics that identify them as a person. It is
important to be aware that as teacher, she plays some important roles in order to be more than
traditional teacher.
Mrs. Analyn Calixro is a TLE major in cookery teacher at Suma-ag National High School.
The years of her service, made her a great professional teacher. Her profound love and passion
in teaching made her to be a well-rounded teacher. She is one of the best teachers I’ve ever
known. She executes her lesson very well and giving equal opportunities to the student to
answer every question she passed on to the students. She has a very friendly attitude to her
class, that’s why her students respect her so much. She is one of a kind teacher. Her ability to
empathize and understand how children cope with problems and difficulties is well appreciated
and gratefully acknowledge. She is willing to share time, effort and resources unselfishly. Her
gentle touch can soothe a child’s sufferings. Her sincere concern for them to learn makes them
strive hard to improve and grow.
She interacts with the child (physically and mentally). She gives affection to the pupils,
makes them understand what emotion is. She smiles to his/her pupils even when they screw up.
She teaches not only text books materials but also the truth that’s happening outside. Practiced
balanced theory. She dedicates herself to the job. She made a commitment. And she has to do
it. She understands that a child is not only a tiny bundle of joy that can cry, smile, and laugh. She
understands that in front of her stands a true miracle of life. She is interested in his own
subjects and at the same time open-minded for others and other topics. She has to be strict,
self-confident and show authority, but at the same time he has to be the pupils, “helper” and
30
quite often even something like their friend who can they talk to if problems occur.

Application of Philosophy of Education in the Classroom
Step 7: Go back to the school where you surveyed the teacher. Identify from our
matrix, his/her dominant philosophy.
Step 8: Observe his/her class and activities in at least three hours. Record your
observation in your notebook. Write down at least 5 teaching actions
that reflect his/her philosophy of education. Describe in detail.
Step 9: Prepare this report as an entry to your portfolio
Observations: Write at least 5 observations in narrative form that shows the application of the
dominant philosophy of the Teacher.
1. She let the student’s answered by themselves. She set herself as a facilitator of the students.

My Reflections/Insights
1. Have you discovered your Philosophy of Education? How do you feel after knowing it? Is your
philosophy or firm belief of education reflected in what you are doing as a future teacher?
As a student, I am very particular about the rules and regulations in school. I am aware of the
behaviors that is acceptable in the society I belong. For me, for every actions there is an equal
reaction. What you have done to others will bring it back to you.
The practices that I will do, that will reflect my Philosophy of Education will be: (describe in
sentences)
I will be more sensitive about the behaviors of my students. I will consider their differences as
a person as well as their environment they lived in that surely affect their own behavior. I will
set rules and regulations that can truly discipline the children. A rules that did not take
authority but they can see as their mother, their mentor and their friend. Before I set the rules
and regulation in my classroom, I will explain to them the advantages of being a good follower
so that they will reflect on these advantages that would enable them to be a good citizen

2. In your observations, does an experienced teacher practiced what they believe in (philosophy of
education) in actual teaching? If yes, describe the instance/episode. If no, what could be the
reason?
Yes. The experienced teacher practiced what they believe in Progressivism in actual teaching.
The experienced teacher believed that to develop lifelong learners, she should be learner –
centered. Based on my observations, the teacher truly exercises the learner – centered
approach. The teacher let the students to think and discover the answer by themselves. She
did not allow the students to be dependent on what the teacher always says. She always gives
an exercises to the students that will let the students practiced the think, pair and share.
