Cruise Control

The cruise control function is part of the engine control
module (ECM) and the vehicle electronic control unit
(VECU). Switch inputs are sent to the VECU. The VECU
communicates with the ECM through the data links.
In order for the cruise control to be activated, a brake
test must first be done by pressing the brake pedal for
approximately 2 seconds.
The cruise control is disconnected when the brake or clutch
pedal is pressed or when the control for engine brake is
moved to a manual braking position (1, 2, 3 or B). The
cruise control can also be completely disconnected by
putting the switch in the OFF position.

The cruise control (CC) is activated by the switch on the

cruise control lever being set to the ON position and the
SET +/- button being pressed at the desired speed. The
VECU senses the control’s signals and sends them to the
engine control module.

When the engine brake is in the A position and cruise

control is engaged, the engine brake automatically engages
if vehicle speed exceeds the set cruise control speed. The
I-VEB will engage with infinite control (within the limits of the
W3002499
engine brake) to maintain that speed.

The speed is increased or decreased with the SET +/-
button. The speed the vehicle has when the SET +/- button
is released is stored in the VECU memory, on condition the
selected speed is within the cruise control’s speed range.
When the switch is set to the RESUME position, the vehicle
speed resumes the previously set speed.
Parameters BK and AI determine the lowest and highest
speeds of the cruise control. The speed sensor sends
speed information to the VECU, which compares it with the
set speed.

If an adaptive cruise control (ACC) is installed, it will take
over the cruise control function as soon as there is an
object within the defined radar zone. When the radar zone
is empty again, the control is returned to the cruise control.
If an ACC is faulty or the contact between CC and ACC
is broken, the cruise control is disconnected but can be
reactivated with the RESUME button (however, without
ACC function).
Eco-Cruise
The Eco-Cruise feature causes the vehicle to go up a hill,
when cruise control is engaged, a little slower in order
to save fuel. The vehicle is allowed to travel downhill a
little faster than normal to preserve trip time. On vehicles
with Mass Based Variable Torque, Eco-Cruise uses the
calculated weight to determine the torque at which the droop
begins so that fuel is saved regardless of the vehicle weight.

On vehicles equipped with Eaton VORAD SmartCruise,
cruise control is disengaged in the event the SmartCruise
system fails to operate. You must stop the truck, turn the
ignition off and on, and activate the control twice in order for
the cruise control to operate.
Note: Read the Eaton VORAD Collision Warning System
Driver Reference Manual before taking a vehicle equipped
with VORAD out on the road.
Eco-Cruise is available as an option when the vehicle is
ordered. When this feature is enabled, a configuration
parameter is available to configure the function. This
parameter (PDM- Soft Cruise Adjustment) has four possible
settings in order to configure the feature for the primary
application of the vehicle. This value is possible to view and
change using the Parameter Programming function within
Tech Tool. Parameter FTM-Enable cruise control soft cruise
function must be set to Yes in order for PDM to be changed.

• (2) MEDIUM – approximately 5 km/h (3 mph) droop
• (1) STIFF – approximately 3 km/h (2 mph) droop
• (0) NEGLIGIBLE – approximately 1 km/h (0.5 mph)
