THE ROAD NOT TAKEN

By: Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
(students are reading silently)
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Questions: “It is all about how we choose our own way into
our journey”
1. So what is the poem all about?
“Sir, I have an idea”
“The poem states that, you will always have

POETRY

-is an imaginative awareness of experience

expressed through meaning, sound, and
rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an
emotional response.

It comprises of several elements:

1.Theme -- it is the controlling idea of a poem is

the idea continuously developed throughout the
poem by sets of key words that identify the
poet's subject and his attitude or feeling about it.

- Frost helps to express this theme by

using symbolism to portray a road as
one's journey of life.

2. Stanza -is a group within a poem which may

have two or many lines. They are like
paragraphs.

- the poem is comprise of four stanzas,

each consisting of five lines.

3. Sound - That doesn't just mean

rhyme.

 Rhyme - means sounds agree. "Rhyme"

usually means end rhymes (words at the
end of a line). They give balance and
please the ear. Sometimes rhymes are
exact. Other times they are just similar. Sir, for example in the first stanza, the rhyming
words are, wood, stood, could and undergrowth,
“can you give an example of rhyming both.”
words in the poem?”

”very good”

4.Rhythm

 Meter (or metrics) - When you speak,

you don't say everything in a steady tone
like a hum--you'd sound funny. Instead,
you stress parts of words.

5.Figures of speech are also called

figurative language. The most well-known
figures of speech are are simile, metaphor,
and personification.

APPLICATION
The class will be divided in three groups.
Each group are assigned to rephrase the poem.

ABSTRACTION
E. Generalization

In the poem "The Road Not Taken", author

Robert Frost uses the simple image of a road to
represent a person's journey through life. A
well-established poet, Frost does a proficient
job of transforming a seemingly common road
to one of great importance, which along the way
helps one identify who they really are.

Again what is poetry?

F. Evaluation

Identify the elements of poetry that are

being described.

1. They give balance and please the

ear.
2. It is the measurement in the poem.
3. It is the idea in the poem.
4. It is also called figurative language
that makes the poem more colorful.
5. It refers to the lines in the poem
