ADERCO L 1050 –
LUBRICITY IMPROVEMENT ADDITIVE

Poor lubricity is an inherent property associated with certain light

density and low viscosity fuels – for example naphtha, kerosene and
gas condensates. Recently, the introduction of Ultra Low Sulphur
Distillate marine fuels has raised again the issue, especially for fuels
below 0,01% sulphur content.

These type fuels provide little or no lubrication to metal surfaces so that

critical components such as fuel pumps are likely to experience serious
wear and premature failure. Furthermore the ignition delay in the boiler
can increase the risk of a boiler explosion on board of the vessels.

ADERCO L 1050 is a lubricity improvement additive which has been

especially developed to address friction & wear problems in fuel pumps
and to alleviate excessive operational and maintenance issues when
burning low lubricity distillate fuels.

Unlike earlier-generation products that are available on the market,

ADERCO L 1050 has been specifically developed to address the unique
technical requirements of the marine industry. This additive also
overcomes certain undesirable properties associated with earlier
products, such as solubility, stability and incompatibility. Taking all this
into consideration during the development stage, this has resulted in
the following product features and benefits:

• Highly concentrated product

• Helps to protect wear on fuel pumps and injectors
• High Flash point - no extra storage required
• Easy to transport – no airfreight restrictions
• Considered a non-dangerous, non-hazardous product
• Excellent mixing and compatibility with gas oil
• No tendency to form troublesome gum deposits
• No interaction with other fuel additives

AVERAGE DOSAGE:
1 litre per 30 tonnes of fuel.

DOSAGE:
Aderco L 1050 ranges from 1 litre per 10 tonnes up to 40 tonnes

Why is the dosage rate not fixed?

ISO has created a specification for the fuel. According to the results on
measurement from HFFR, the dosage of the lubricity improver can be
calculated. In practical terms, therefore, the scar test and the dosage has
to be calculated accordingly after each bunkering!

A new product assisting to deal with the official Emission

Requirements

The limits applicable in Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) will be

reduced to
1.0 % effective from 1st July 2010 (from the current 1.5 %; being
further reduced to 0.10 % effective from 1st January 2015.).
The last change which will have immediate effects from 1st January 2010,
is the reduction to 0.10 % of sulphur for those vessels operating in ports
of the SECAs area.

A new grade of distillate fuel is born.

The DMZ is a new grade of distillate fuel. The difference between DMX –
DMA and DMZ is the minimum viscosity of 3.000 mm²/S @40°C
This DMZ is made to respect the minimum requirements of engine
builders at the level of viscosity in Gas Oil.

Do not confound viscosity and lubricity which are total different items
without any link between the one and the other.
For exemple:
You can have a high viscosity with a low grade of lubricity and the inverse
is possible too: a low viscosity and a high grade of lubricity
The use of ADERCO L 1050 will help you highering the level of lubricity

July 2010
How is Diesel Fuel evaluated for lubricating properties:

Diesel fuel and other fluids are tested for lubricating ability using a device
called a “High Frequency Reciprocating Rig” or HFRR. The HFRR is
currently the internationally accepted, standardized method ISO 12156-1
to evaluate fluids for lubricating ability. It uses a ball bearing that
reciprocates or moves back and forth on a metal surface at a very high
frequency during 90 minutes. The machine does this while the ball bearing
and metal surface are immersed in the test fluid (in this case, treated
diesel fuel). At the end of the test the ball bearing is examined under a
microscope and the “wear scar” on the ball bearing is measured in
microns. The larger the wear scar, the poorer the lubricating ability of the
fluid. The independent lab runs every sample twice and averages the size
of the wear scar.
