WRITING TASK 1 (structures)

1-DATA

GRAPH (the most common)

(Always do the Introduction immediately, before studying the graph)

INTRODUCTION
-Paraphrase main sentence
-Mention details: -Components
-Quantity Line
-Time Line
-Give a General Tendency (never
give numbers here)

-The word/sentence we can use to mention the details is: “The data are shown…”
-The General Tendency is the most notorious thing we can see, it is the overview of the
figure and it is essential to mention in the Introduction. The word we can use here is:
“Overall…”

DEVELOPMENT
-Describe tendencies
-Compare them

(Connector: To begin with,…)

-Once I have finished the INTRODUCTION. I have to decide what to do.
-I have two aspects to worry about:
1-describe the tendencies and 2-compare them.
-I separate the places where the important events are present. A smart form to work with
this is making the 1st cut in the place where something important happens (for instance:
where both tendencies cross).
-I cut 1 – 2 – 3 I have three kinds of blocks or periods to describe and compare (it may
sound squared, but it is just automation).
-It is not necessary to mention everything; however it is necessary to mention the most
important events that happened.
*In this paragraph we must give numbers (always)

SUMMARIZATION
Summarize the most significant
Information

(Connector: To summarize,…)
-It can be something we have not mentioned before and/or Global Numbers can be
given here. We cannot write the same we wrote in the General Tendency, however, we
cannot forget that the objective of this paragraph is to summarize the most significant
information

WHEN I HAVE 2 FIGURES:

INTRODUCTION: The procedure is the same (try to be very brief)

DEVELOPMENT 1: Dedicated to the first figure (describe-compare)

DEVELOPMENT 2: Dedicated to the second figure (just compare some numbers

/tendencies)

RELATION: If the 2 figures are related we have to describe that relation (when that
relation is very visible, very obvious). There are 2 options: that relation could be
described at the end of DEVELOPMENT 2 or separated, before the Summarization.

SUMMARIZATION: The most significant information related to both figures or not.

2-PROCESS
Important:
-Mention all steps
-Use only Passive Voice (in the development paragraph)
-No summarization

INTRODUCTION
-Paraphrase main sentence
-Mention number of steps
-Mention first and last step

DEVELOPMENT
Connector + Description using Passive Voice
To begin with, Passive Voice
Following that/this, Passive Voice
After this/that, Passive Voice
During this stage, Passive Voice
At this point, Passive Voice
Next/Later, Passive Voice
Finally, Passive Voice

OBJECT (3-4-5)
Why Object? Because we describe an object that could be a building (a theatre, a
supermarket, a hospital, a mall…) or a structure (a tower, a monument…) or a place (a
town, an island…).
Possibilities:
3) PLAN
In this case we are going to find 2 or 3 objects, however, the main sentence (“The
diagrams below give information about the Eiffel Tower in Paris and an outline project to
extend it underground”) tells us that it is all about one (in the case of the Eiffel Tower,
the Plan is adding new levels underground. The other 2 objects are EXTRA
INFORMATION).
INTRODUCTION
-Paraphrase main sentence
-Mention extra information (in a general form, not details)
-Mention task information (also in a general form, not details)

DEVELOPMENT 1
-Describe Extra Information (not everything, only the most relevant
things which are related to the main object)
(Connector: To begin with,…)

DEVELOPMENT 2
-Describe Task Information (everything)
(We use Future Time or sentences like “It is projected/planned…”)

SUMMARIZATION
-Summarize globally, depending on the task (be careful not to repeat
the same of Development 2)
(Connector: To summarize,…)

4) PLAN AND COMPARISON

We are going to find a Plan/Project, but with 2 possibilities.

INTRODUCTION
-Paraphrase main sentence
-Mention task information (in a general form, not details)

DEVELOPMENT
-Describe and Compare Task information
(All the information related to the project itself -in the case of
GARLSDON: S1 and S2- we use Future Time or sentences like “It is
projected/planned…”)
(Connector: To begin with,…)

SUMMARIZATION
-Summarize globally, depending on the task (be careful not to repeat
the same of the Development paragraph)
(Connector: To summarize,…)

5) COMPARISON
We are going to find 2 objects that we have to compare (they are not a Plan, they are
just built. It is not a Project).

INTRODUCTION
-Paraphrase Main sentence
-Mention task information (in a general form, not details)

DEVELOPMENT
-Describe and Compare Task information
(Use Present and Past Time, never Future)
(Use references such as: on the right side/on the left side/in the middle,
north/south/east/west…)
(Connector: To begin with,…)

SUMMARIZATION
-Summarize globally, depending on the task (be careful not to repeat
the same of the Development paragraph)
(Connector: To summarize,…)

LEXICAL RESOURCES WE SHOULD USE IN TASK 1:

 Formal Connectors
 Passive Voice
 Present Perfect (only in the Process and the Object, never for DATA)
