Steel Design – Part 1

Bolted and Riveted Connection

Assumptions.

1) The friction between the joined is ignored.

2) The Load transfer from one plate to another is equally
distributed to all joint in a joint.
3) The tensile stress in the net section of the plates is
uniform for each unit area of the cross section.
4) The bending stress in the bolts are ignore.

Allowable Stress

-Tensile on Gross Area = 0.6 Fy

Problem 2
-Tensile on net Area ( Fracture ) = 0.5 Fu
A lapped, bolted tension member is shown in the figure.
-Shear on Net Area = 0.3 Fy
Diameter of bolt are 18 mm and the plate material is A36
steel with Fy = 250 Mpa and Fu= 400 Mpa. Assume The
Types of Connection
Fasteners are Adequate and do not control the tensile
capacity. Diameter of hole is 3 mm bigger than the Diameter
of the bolt. Determine the following.

a) Tensile capacity of the lapped joint based on gross area

b) Tensile capacity of the lapped joint based on net area
c) Tensile capacity of the lapped joint based on block
shear strength

Staggered Bolted and Riveted Connection.

Problem 1
Determine the Allowable tensile force P which can be
applied to the plates shown. The AISC Specification A 36
Steel and 20 mm diameter A325 bolts placed in standard
holes with threads excluded from the shear plane are used
in a bearing type connection . Fy = 248 Mpa, Fu = 400 Mpa, Cochrane’s formula = S² / 4g
Fv =206.9 Mpa and
Fp =1.5 Fu Net width : Wn = W – hole + Ʃ S² / 4g

Shear Stress in bolt : P = F/A the safe load P

Polar moment of inertia: J = Ʃx² + Ʃy²

Where:
F – reaction
T – Couple or applied moment
A – Area of single rivet or bolt
ρ – Distance from centroid of the group of bolt or rivet to
any
bolt or rivet
P- Shearing stress
J - Polar moment of inertia of the group of bolt

Problem 6 Welded Connection
From the bracket shown, which consist ot two plates riveted \
to the Column by 4-22 mm diameter rivets which is NSCP Specifications for fillet welds
subjected to an eccentric load P at an eccentric of 200 mm.
Allowable shearing stress of rivets is 100 Mpa. Determine 1) Effective area : the effective area of fillet welds shall
the safe load P be taken as the effective length times the effective
throat thickness

2) Effective length of fillet welds except fillet welds in

holes and slots shall be the overall length of full
size fillets including returns

3) The effective throat thickness of a fillet weld shall
be the shortest distance from the root of the joint to
the face of the diagrammatic weld, except that for
fillet welds made by the submerged arc welding
process ( SAW).

Te = t for t ≤ 10 mm
Te = 0.707t + 3mm for t > 10 mm
