Honeywell to Supply Auxiliary Power Unit for
New Embraer Aircraft
Honeywell will
supply yet another
high performance,
fuel-efficient power
system for the
new Embraer MSJ
and MLJ family
of business aircraft. Embraer has chosen
Honeywell’s 36-150 auxiliary power unit (APU)
for the MSJ/MLJ aircraft.
In April, Embraer selected Honeywell to
provide the HTF7500-E turbofan propulsion
system family for the MSJ/MLJ aircraft.
The 36-150 APU, mated with an air-cycle
air conditioning system, provides high
pneumatic performance to minimize
aircraft preflight cooling and heating
time, further refining a comfortable
passenger experience and
making preflight preparations more
comfortable for the crew.
In addition, the APU drives
a high-output electrical
generator to power cockpit
and cabin galley systems,
independent of main-engine or
ground-power operation. Convenient,
comfortable operation is possible from virtually

Honeywell’s HTF7000 turbofan propulsion
system for Embraer’s new MSJ/MLJ family
of business aircraft will include the newest
environmentally friendly technologies, yet
still deliver the reliability that the HTF7000
family of engines has established as an
industry benchmark.
The new engine will
use Honeywell’s
proprietary SABER,
a unique package of
advanced combustor
technologies. The
use of an innovative
“rich-quench-lean”
configuration improves fuel burn, contributing
to best-in-class fuel economy, and significantly
reduces the production of nitrogen oxides,
any location in the world—even those with
limited services.
“Honeywell’s 36-150 ported shroud APU has
a high-flow, high-efficiency compressor that
provides on-wing reliability, efficient main
engine starting and high altitude electrical
power capacity,” said Rob Wilson, President,
Business and General Aviation. “Additionally,
the 36-150 also reduces nuisance ramp noise
by eliminating surge valve bleed flow on the
ground. Passengers will board the aircraft in
quiet comfort.”

propulsion system, including the nacelle
system and thrust reverser. The engine will be
covered by Honeywell’s Maintenance Service
Plan and supported worldwide by Honeywell’s
experienced team of Field Service Engineers.

Honeywell’s Zing system for TFE731 engines
has accumulated more than 1,500 flight
hours on Hawker aircraft and performed
more than 275 downloads of engine data
at U.S. and international airports. The Zing
system will be available for the Hawker-
equipped TFE platforms through dealers
and service centers beginning in July 2008.
The Zing system downloads engine
data, and then transmits it wirelessly to
an interactive web site. Email then alerts
maintainers of TFE731 engines with remote
access, providing data and analysis of their
engine health reports.
Primus Apex™ Certified for Pilatus PC-12 NG
The Primus Apex™ integrated avionics
system for the Pilatus PC-12 NG aircraft has
been certified in accordance with European
Aviation Safety Agency and Federal Aviation
Administration approvals. The flight test
program has accumulated more than 669
hours of flight test on 364 test flights.
As part of its validation testing, a Pilatus test
aircraft completed several Atlantic crossings,
with Apex avionics operating flawlessly. The
aircraft flew to Phoenix and to Olathe, Kan.,
“Zing eliminates the manual work to
download engine data, improves proactive
trend monitoring that prevents failures and
reduces downtime during unscheduled
engine events,” said Gregg Cohen, Vice
President, Honeywell Business Aviation
Aftermarket Services. “We estimate that
operators in the program have saved
over 500 hours just downloading engine
data alone.”
The avionics unit that downloads the engine
data over a GSM cell phone network is
PMA certified and is available through a

plans to expand the Zing offering to other
TFE731 equipped platforms and other

Engine Operational
Noise During Low-
Power Operation
Engine noise may develop
on some engines during
low-power ground operations.
Though it is often compared
to a rumble and described as
low frequency and amplitude,
the sound level may be
high enough to distinguish
above normal engine
operational noise.
Engine rumble can also
be intermittent and may
be reduced or eliminated
by selecting the aircraft
boost pumps. These noises
are likely caused by fuel
pressure oscillation, which
can cause a corresponding
pressure fluctuation inside the
combustor. The noise level
may be reduced or eliminated
by checking or replacing
the flow divider vent line
check valve, flow divider, and
ecology drain pump. Refer
to the Fault Isolation section
of the EMM and AMM for
instructions.
A similar sound may be
produced when engines
operate in a crosswind
condition. Ground runs for
troubleshooting this condition
should be performed with the
aircraft pointed directly into
the wind. Follow authorized
published procedures for
ground operation.
