importance and uses of coconuts. In India, World Coconut Day is celebrated with the guidance

Tamil Nadu:
1. Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved financing of up to $500 million for a multitranche
financing facility (MFF) infrastructure project in at least 10 cities of Tamil Nadu. The first
tranche of the program amounting to $169 million will target the cities

of Chennai, Coimbatore, Rajapalayam, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, and Vellore. The Second
one would be a $2 million grant from the Asian Clean Energy Fund, established by the
Government of Japan, to fund the solar energy pilot project. ADB’s financing will be provided
in 3 tranches between September 2018 and March 2022. This assistance is a part of its support
to the state’s Vision Tamil Nadu 2023 to provide universal access to water and sanitation and

develop world-class cities in high-performing industrial corridors.
2. Tamil Nadu Industries Minister M C Sampath announced that, the 2 nd edition of Tamil Nadu
government’s ‘Global Investors Meet 2019’, an investment promotion programme, will be
held in Chennai on January 23-24, 2019. This announcement was made at a roadshow

organized to attract investors prior to the ‘Global Investors Meet 2019’. For ‘Global Investors
Meet 2019’, Rs. 75 crore has been alloted. The previous edition was held in September 2015.
3. Tamil Nadu government signed an MOU with the centre to implement Ayushman Bharat along
with state’s Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS).Tamil

Nadu is the 30th State to sign up for ABS. This association would benefit about 77 lakh poor
and vulnerable families in Tamil Nadu.
4. Tamil Nadu government announced scheme for the protection of the exotic Neela
kurinji (Strobilanthus kunthianus) plants in Nilagiri district of Tamilnadu. This came after the

complaints of packaging and selling them on commercial basis. These plants flower only once
in 12 years. The Neela Kurinju is a native to the Western Ghats.
5. Chennai Koyambedu bus terminus is going to be renamed as Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MGR Bus
Terminus. This announcement was made by TN CM Edappadi K Palanichami. In addition that
CM has announced that new bus station is going to set up at Kilambakkam to connect Chennai

6. Former CM of TN Dr. MGR‘s birth centenary’s valedictory function was held at sep 30, 2018

7. Thiru Rakesh Kumar was appointed as the new President of NLC India Limited, Neyveli. He is

9. Hydro carbon project is going to implement in 55 places of our country including 3 places in
Tamil Nadu. An agreement is going to be signed in New Delhi on 1st Oct, 2018.Earlier Union

Govt had given permission to implement hydro carbon scheme in Chidamabram ( Cuddalore
Dist of TN) and in Cauvery Delta Region. Now the three places which have chosen are
Villupuram, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam regions of TN.
10. First time in Tamil Nadu, distribution of power/electricity is privatized by Electricity

Chennai Port. This is the largest vessel which was handled by Chennai port ever in its history.

1. Parakram Parv or Surgical Strike Day - Second Anniversary of Surgical Strike was celebrated
on September 29 – 30, 2018 by Indian Army to showcase gallant action of brave Army in the
conduct of Surgical Strikes on September 29, 2016. This day was also marked to remember
sacrifice of soldiers during ‘Uri incident’.
2. Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has partnered with Google to launch Loo Review
campaign on Google Map under aegis of Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM–U). This
campaign aims to encourage all local guides in India to rate and review public toilets on Google
Maps. 500 plus cities in India with more than 30,000 toilets with name of “SBM Toilet” are
currently live on Google Maps.
3. Under the Chairmanship of Injeti Srinivas, Secretary, MCA, the Union Ministry of Corporate
Affairs (MCA) has constituted High Level Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility –
2018 (HLC-2018). It will review existing CSR framework as per Act, Rules and Circulars issued

7. According to data provided by the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry, over 15 per
cent of the 54.95 lakh houses sanctioned in last three years under the Centre’s
flagship Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). As per the data, 8.55 lakh houses have been
completed till August 21 , 2018 and work on 30.4 lakh units across the country.
8. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that, the Centre has increased its contribution in

the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) from 75 % to 90 % with effect from April 1, 2018.
The Centre will contribute 90 % and states will contribute 10 % to the relief fund. The
additional contribution by the central government in SDRF regarding this will be Rs 1,690.35

9. The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, inaugurated the Mahatma Gandhi
International Sanitation Convention in New Delhi on September 29, 2018. It aimed to focus
on India’s target towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030, especially targets
6.1, 6.2 and 6.3. Target 6.2 of the Sustainable Development Goals to end open defecation.
10. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Conference on Academic Leadership on Education for
Resurgence in Vigyan Bhawan with the participation of Directors of 350 universities. This
conference was jointly organized by UGC, AICTE, ICSSR, IGNCA, IGNOU, JNU and
SGT University. The theme of the Conference is to work on the challenges faced by the Indian
education system.
11. President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to set up a committee to run the Medical Council

14. Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs approved the construction of 6,26,488 more affordable
houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). This decision was taken during
the 38thmeeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee. A total of 11 states
are involved in the proposal of the houses. They are: Uttar Pradesh was sanctioned 2,34,879

houses, Andhra Pradesh was sanctioned 1,40,559, Madhya Pradesh: 74,631,Bihar: 50,017
houses, Chattisgarh: 30,371 houses, Gujarat: 29,185 houses, Maharashtra : 22,265 houses,
Tamil Nadu 20,794 houses, Odisha: 13,421 houses, Tripura: 9,778 houses, Manipur: 2,588.
After this approval, cumulative approvals under PMAY (U) became 60,28,608 under CSMC.
15. The Ministry of Personnel announced that the government set up an eight-member Lokpal

Search Committee under the Chairmanship of former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Ranjana
Prakash Desai. Other members include: Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash, former SBI

16. A five-judge Constitution bench chaired by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra on 28th
Sep,2018 ruled out the provisions of Kerala Hindu Places of Public Worship (Authorisation of
Entry) Rules, 1965. According to this, women of the age group 10-50 were denied to enter the
Sabarimala Temple. The Supreme Court struck it down as it violated the right of Hindu women
to practice religion.

17. Union Minister for Tribal Affairs launched “Punch Tantra Diwali collection” and announced
World Boxing Champion Mary Kom as Brand Ambassador of “Tribes India” in Vigyan Bhawan,
New Delhi. The Punch Tantra range of tribal arti-facts consists of handlooms and handicrafts
inspired and promoted by Mary Kom. The Punch Tantra collection comprises Sarees, Stoles,
Dupatas, Shawls, Kurtas/Kurtis, Lamp shades (Kandels), Sky Lanters, Diyas, Gift hampers, etc.

18. Nepal-Bharat Maitri Pashupati Dharamshala was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi along with Nepal PM K P Sharma Oli in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal. Nepal-Bharat
Maitri Pashupati Dharamshala is rest house for pilgrims in Kathmandu, built with Indian
assistance. It is located on banks of Bagmati River. It has provisions to meet the requirements

20. The merger of Idea Cellular and Vodafone India has been completed after it was cleared by

National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The merged entity is named Vodafone Idea Ltd and
dislodges current market leader Bharti Airtel from top position, by its sheer size and scale. This
merger has created India’s biggest telecom service provider. New board has been constituted
for merged entity with 12 directors (including six independent directors) and Kumar Mangalam
Birla as its Chairman.

21. A MoU for implementation of 90 billion Indore-Manmad rail project has been signed among
the shipping and railway ministries, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra governments. It will
have 55% share and Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will have share of 15 per cent each.

22. A conference on Motivating and Attracting Youth in Agriculture (MAYA) was held at National
Agricultural Science Complex (NASC), in New Delhi on 30-31,Aug 2018. The conference was
inaugurated by Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR). The
conference offered an opportunity to discuss various options for attracting youth to agriculture
and motivating them towards entrepreneurship in agriculture and related fields.
23. MOVE Cyclathon - a cycle rally was flagged off by National Institution for Transforming India
(NITI) Aayog to spread message of clean mobility to the Indian public and promote cleaner,
accessible modes of transport. The cyclathon was held in run up to MOVE: Global Mobility
Summit scheduled to be held on September 7, 8 in New Delhi. It is aimed at bringing together
and engaging with key stakeholders within rapidly transforming global mobility landscape and

24. A draft rules on sale of drugs by e-pharmacies to regulate online sale of medicines across

India has released by Union Health Ministry. It is mandatory for online pharmacies to register
under Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and obtain trade licence
applicable across India from any state government. E-pharmacies only need to take one licence
in any state. They can sell drugs all over the country even if they have one licence. These rules

also have been proposed to ensure accessibility and availability of genuine drugs to the people
across India from authentic online portals.
25. The proposal of Jharkhand Government to rename Nagar Untari town and railway station as
Banshidhar Nagar, after Banshidhar Temple, which is dedicated to Krishna in Garhwa district

27. For the development of rural circuit in Kerala, Malanad Malabar Cruise Tourism Project
under Swadesh Darshan Scheme has sanctioned by Ministry of Tourism. Under this project,
Ministry of Tourism will be developing three cruises with budget of Rs. 80.37 crores. The
three approved Cruises were Malabari Cuisine and Culinary Cruise (Muthappan Cruise): It will
start from Valapattanam and cover distance of 40 km to reach Munambu Kadavu in

Valapattanam River. Valapattanam River- Theyyam Cruise: It will begin from Valapattanam and
will go up to Pazhayangadi in Valapattanam River. Mangrove Cruise: It will be running on
Kuppam River covering distance of 16 Km from Pazhayangadi to Kuppam.

28. Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD has officially decided to participate in
Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) after gap of nine years. It will send
team of officers to Paris to negotiate India’s terms of participation in PISA 2021. PISA is
assessment test for 15-year-olds, organised every three years by Organisation for Economic
Cooperation Development (OECD), Paris, France. PISA measures student performance in
mathematics, reading, and science and even innovative subjects like collaborative problem-
solving and money literacy.
29. National Mission on Government eMarketplace (GeM) for increasing awareness and
accelerating use of GeM by major central Ministries, State Governments and their agencies
has launched by Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry. The mission aims to promote

35. Snow leopard was spotted at height of about 4,000 metres in Lippa-Asra wildlife sanctuary in

37. State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has made oil and gas discoveries in Madhya

Pradesh and West Bengal that may potentially open up two new sedimentary basins in
country. They are category-III basins, having hydrocarbon and are considered geologically
prospective for exploration. The gas deposits were discovered in block in Vindhya basin,
Madhya Pradesh. This find is at 3,000-plus meters deep and is being now tested. Oil and gas

per day of gas has flowed from one object that was tested in West Bengal.
38. The Odisha State Assembly has passed resolution with as many as 104 of total 147 legislators
casting their votes in its favour seeking creation of Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad or

second house of legislature). The proposed Council will have 49 members (one-third size of
state assembly. The resolution now will be sent to Central Government (Union cabinet) for
approval, following which it will be tabled in both houses of the Parliament. Thereafter,

39. India and France have signed implementation agreement on Mobilise Your City (MYC) to
support three pilot cities – Nagpur, Kochi and Ahmedabad for reduction of greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions related to urban transport. The three pilot cities selected under programme
as well as MoHUAwill benefit from technical assistance activities to be carried out under MYC.

40. Supreme Court declared Centre’s Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid. The five-judge
constitution bench was headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra. The bench stated that Aadhaar
would remain mandatory for filing IT returns and allotment of Permanent Account Number
(PAN). But, it will not be mandatory to link Aadhaar to bank accounts. Telecom service
providers cannot look for linking it with mobile connections.
41. Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Santosh Kumar Gangwar inaugurated the 7th
National Conference on Excellence in Workplace Safety and Occupational Health in New
Delhi. Discussions were held on subjects like: best practices in workplace safety, importance of
lighting in workplace safety, occupational health and working conditions, risk assessment

documents, etc.To avail the services, citizens have to dial 1076 and place a request. They will
be informed of the documents required. They can specify a time for a “Mobile Sahayak” to

51. Prime Minister of India have announced increase in remuneration for ASHA and Anganwadi
workers. This would be effective from October 2018. Doubling of routine incentives to ASHA
workers. Increase in the honorarium given to Anganwadi workers which will be as
follows:Those receiving Rs. 3000 would get Rs.4500,Those receiving Rs. 2200 would
get Rs.3500. For Anganwadi helpers those receiving Rs.1500 would get Rs.2250. Anganwadi

57. Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik declared the state open defecation free
(ODF) at the launch of “Swachhata Hi Seva“ campaign at the Sher-i-Kashmir International
Conference Centre (SKICC). All 22 districts, 4,171 Gram Panchayats and 7,565 villages in the
state are ODF as per Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) guidelines. This was achieved ahead of
the target one year in advance.

3. NITI Aayog and United Nations in India signed Sustainable Development Framework for
2018-2022. The agreement is reflection of commitment and efforts made by India towards
attaining Sustainable Development Goals. It was framed following highly participative process,

in consultation with government entities, civil society representatives, academia, and private
sector. Focus areas under it include poverty and urbanization, health, water, and sanitation,
education, climate change, nutrition and food security, clean energy, and disaster resilience;
skilling, entrepreneurship, job creation, gender equality and youth development.

6. India and Pakistan have agreed to undertake Indus Waters Treaty 1960 mandated tours by

hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir. This was decided in recently concluded high-
level bilateral talks on Indus Waters Treaty in Lahore, Pakistan. IWT is water-distribution treaty
between India and Pakistan which was brokered by World Bank (then the International Bank
for Reconstruction and Development). It deals with sharing of water of Indus water system

8. India opens Zokhawthar immigration check-post in Mizoram along Myanmar border on sep1,

9. The World Bank has approved a financial assistance of Rs. 929.89 crore for Shimla water

10. Eight core sectors have grown by 6.6% in July 2018 according to Index of Eight Core Industries
released by Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Eight Core Industries viz. electricity, steel,
refinery products, crude oil, coal, cement, natural gas and fertilizers. The output of coal,
refinery products, fertilizer and cement grew by 9.7%, 12.3%, 1.3% and 10.8% respectively in
July 2018. However, growth rate in production of crude oil and natural gas recorded negative
growth in July, 2018. On the other hand, steel sector expansion came down to 6%, as against
9.4% in July 2017.
11. Census 2021 for the first time in independent India will collect data on Other Backwards
Castes (OBCs). This decision was taken in meeting the roadmap for undertaking the Census in
2021 chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. This comes more than 25 years after

implementation of 27% reservation for OBCs based on Mandal Commission’s
recommendations on basis of last castes data collected in 1931 census.
12. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) relaxed Aadhar enrolment targets for
banks and extended the deadline to November 1, 2018. According to the norms:Minimum

enrolment or updation has been raised to 12 from January 1, 2019 and 16 from April 1, 2019.
Banks achieving the target of minimum 8 Aadhaar enrolment/updations per day per branch in
the month of November 2018 will be exempted from financial disincentives up to October

to avail UIDAI’s authentication and eKYC service free of cost. Banks have been said to set
up Bank Aadhaar Kendras in one out of every 10 branches.

22. The World Hindu Congress (WHC-2018) was held Chicago, United States. It was second
edition of World Hindu Congress and was attended by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. The
theme of WHC-2018 “Sumantrite Suvikrante” — think collectively, achieve valiantly”. It was
organized to commemorate 125 years of Swami Vivekananda’s historic Chicago address on
September 11, 1893. It is held once every four years. The inaugural WHC was held in November
2014 in New Delhi.
23. Pakistan could become world’s 5th largest nuclear weapons state after Russia, United States,
France and China in terms of possession of total nuclear warheads according to a recent
report. Pakistan currently has 140 to 150 nuclear warheads and its stockpile is expected to

increase to 220 to 250 by 2025 (surpassing United Kingdom) if its current proliferation trend
continues. The size of increase in Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal will depend on many factors.
Pakistan is also modifying its nuclear posture with new short-range nuclear-capable weapon

16. The first ever midair refuelling of indigenously developed light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas
has successfully carried out by Indian Air Force (IAF). LCA Tejas is lightweight single-seat
multi-role jet fighter, powered by single engine. It has tailess and compound delta wing
design made entirely of composite structures. It is pegged as world’s smallest and lightest
supersonic fighter in its class. It was named ‘Tejas’, which means ‘radiance’, by former

prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It took total of 20 years from 1993 to 2013 for building
this aircraft. Its maiden flight took place in 2001. For this test, Russian-built IL-78 MKI

17. BEL has bagged order worth Rs. 9,200 crore for supply of seven Long Range Surface-to-Air

loan recovery application in Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRT) by banks and financial

21. 18th Asian Games concluded in Indonesia on Sep 3, 2018. Indian women hockey captain Rani
Rampal was India’s flag-bearer at closing ceremony. It also first time hosted eSports (form of

Games, China has topped medals tally with 132 gold, 92 silver and 65 bronze followed by Japan
and South Korea. India finished at eighth position both in terms of gold medals and total tally.

Kaka (one horned rhino) and Atung (deer) are mascots of 2018 Asian Games. These three

22. Japanese woman swimmer Rikako Ikee (18) has chosen as the Most Valuable Player (MVP)

Rikako Ikee was recognized as MVP for winning 6 gold and 2 silver medals. She had won gold
medals in 50m butterfly, 100m fly, 50m free, 100m free, 4x100m free and the 4x100m medley

events and silver medals in 4 x 200m freestyle and mixed medley relays. She is first female
athlete in any sport to win six gold medals at a single Asian Games. With this, she became first
female winner of MVP award, which OCA introduced at 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok,
Thailand. She was presented with trophy and $50,000 cheque.
23. 2017-18 Duleep Trophy has won by India Blue by defeating defending champion India Red by
an innings and 187 runs in the final match played at NPR College ground in Dindigul,
Tamilnadu. Himachal Pradesh batsman Nikhil Gangta was named man of match for his superb
knock of 130. Duleep Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket tournament played between teams
representing geographical zones of India. This tournament was instituted in 1961- 62 by BCCI.
It is named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar. It is previously contested by three
teams, namely India Red, India Blue and India Green.
