Aims:
To prepare and present a summer suitcase
Materials:
Pictures of places your students visit in the summer, e.g. the beach, the mountains
Pictures of clothes and holiday items, e.g. a swimsuit
A copy of a suitcase cutout for each student
Language focus:
Where do you go in the summer? / I go to … in the summer.
The weather is … / I wear …. / I use …
Instructions:
- Show a picture of a place your students visit in the summer, e.g. the beach. Ask Do you
go to the beach in the summer? Encourage the class to respond and then elicit more
information, e.g. Do you like the beach? What do you wear? Do you take (a ball)?
What other things do you take? Repeat the procedure with other holiday places.
- Practice the exchange Where do you go in the summer? / I go to… as a class.
Students ask and answer the question in their pairs. (Extend: The students do a class
survey)
- Draw a Venn diagram on the board and label the two circles: at the beach / in the
mountains.
- Show the class different items of holiday clothing and ask Where do you wear (boots)?
At the beach, in the mountains, or the beach and the mountains? Ask different
students to stick the pictures in the correct part of the diagram each time. Repeat the
procedure with pictures of objects children may use on holiday, asking Where do you
use (a snorkel)?
− Give a suitcase cutout to each student. Demonstrate how to complete each sentence
of the text, writing key words on the board. Each student completes the text and then
draws their clothes and objects in the bottom half of the suitcase.
− Students cut out and fold their suitcase. (Extend: Students colour the outside of their
suitcase and write their name, e.g. Susana’s suitcase.)
− Students present their summer suitcase to the class. [Option: Students complete their
summer suitcase at home as a holiday project]
