STAR brief If the runway in use is in accordance to the STAR selected before
the flight, then leave it alone.

If the runway in use is not in accordance to the

STAR selected before the flight, find the last waypoint in the flight
plan. Go to the AIP on the electronic flight bag, and find a STAR
that has that last waypoint, and leads to the IAF of the desired
runway.

Check and brief:

Go to DEP/ARR
Select ARR
Select arrival runway
Select designated SID, marked with <ACT>
Select a transition if necessary (normally IAF- if vector to final no
transitions necessary)
Do not press execute

Select descent altitude: If no ATC, select next altitude restriction

on the STAR

If ‘RESET MCP ALTITUDE’ appears, press ALT INTV on MCP,

but do not do so unless lower altitude is selected.

Go to LEGS page FMC

Step through all waypoints
Identify STAR waypoints and verify with chart
- Verify the chart in use is correct
- Verify no route discontinuities
- Input and/or verify any speed or altitude stated by chart on
the FMC
- Speed restrictions might not be labelled on the route of the
chart, but in boxes around it. If it states any speed
restrictions, it MUST be inputted in FMC

Good practice: Write down all speed restrictions and target

altitudes on a piece of paper, including 250 at fl100

- Aerodrome elevation
- Transition level

Set course on both sides
Set ground altitude on pressurisation panel
On FMC DEC FORECAST page, enter transition level

Step through approach on FMC and ND

For all altitude restrictions EXCEPT for FAF, make sure it is an at
or above

Missed approach procedure

Brief
Verify with FMC

Decision height/altitude
Find minimums on chart
Select minimums on PFD

Brief PAPI’s
Check approach lighting
Brief MCP modes required

Brief alternate On FMC, go to PROG page

Check for the amount of fuel when landing at destination airport
(ie. 3.5 tonnes)
Compare that with alternate fuel, make sure there is enough.

Autobrakes Find the desired taxiway exit

Go to aerodrome information of chart
Look at the amount of runway from threshold to that taxiway exit
This is the first factor

Second factor: Is it raining? Is the runway slippery and wet?

Third factor: Landing weight. If the plane is heavy it might be

harder to stop

With all these information, deduce whether to use 1,2, or 3

bit like the standard QNH but for temperature. The
standard temperature is 15ºC at 1013

ISA deviation is calculated by

Outside air temp. - standard temp.

On FMC, remember to place + or - before the deviation

value. (+ if hotter, - if cooler)

There should be a STEP option. If not on the xFMC, just
check the distance and the track for the waypoints on the
legs page and match it with the SID chart.

Verify On the FMC LEGS page, match the distance between

distances and waypoints with the one on the flight plan.

SID brief Is it a conventional SID or RNAV SID?

Set up ground based navaids

Interesting fact: SID waypoints on the FMC are labelled

with distances.

Ie. D208H
208 is the radial
H is the 8th alphabet, therefore the waypoint is 8nm from
the navaid.
