1.0 PURPOSE

1.1 PURPOSE
1.1.1 Purpose Define how GM Powertrain uses the Key Characteristic
Designation System (KCDS) to standardize its approach for
the identification, documentation and communication of
characteristics that requires additional care to ensure
consistency and compliance to customer requirements and
government regulations within GM Powertrain and its supplier
community.

Define a method for applying Key Product Characteristic,

Product Quality Characteristic, Attribute Quality Characteristic
and Standard Product Characteristic Documentation Required
(DR) symbols to drawings; and to define a method for
documenting KPC’s, PQC’s, AQC’s and DR’s on drawings
including the KCDS Block usage.

2.0 APPLICATION

2.1 APPLICATION
2.1.1 KCDS Standards Versions GM 1805 QN has two versions Version 2 (Nov. 1998) and
Version 3 (Mar. 2003)

GMW15049 will replace GM 1805 QN for future programs as

noted below

GM1805QN is found on the GM web (Socrates) by entering

QN-1805 in the search field and selecting “Quality Network
Materials Ordering Page”.

GMW15049 is found on the Engineering Standards web site

(A to Z) and on Supply Power.
2.1.2 Implementation See Global Engineering Leadership Team (GELT)
Notice Of Action # 221.
2.1.3 Legacy Programs Legacy Products: Carry over products shall have a business
case for conducting capability studies on DR characteristics.
The CPIT (Current Product Improvement Team) should
analyze the list of DR Characteristics and identify those
characteristics that indeed are affecting our performance in
areas of JD Power, Zero Day Warranty, Reliability and
Durability. The CPIT should then identify which characteristics
should be studied in order to make or exceed our quality
objectives. An implementation plan should accompany the list
of characteristics. This identified list along with the
implementation plan then needs to be approved by the Sector
Leaders. This agreed upon list will require compliance to the
requirements for capability studies and improvement plans.
2.1.4 GPDP Requirement Every new and major product program is required to have
completed KCDS activities. Formal, facilitated workshops
are encouraged and scheduled based on the product plan.

Printed documents are uncontrolled – Must verify revision level prior to use Page 3 of 12
EtQ-114 GM Powertrain Global KCDS Procedure and Design Standard
Revision: 11
Status: Approved
Effective: June 28. 2011
Minor and running changes need to be reviewed regarding
critical characteristics.
2.1.5 GPDS For Engine /Transmission as shipped components no
KCDS entry to GPDS is required, That will be managed on
the Drawing. For Powertrain parts released to vehicle an
entry is required according Global Templates found at
http://gmna1.gm.com/kcds/.
and Work instruction GRC 3.2.9 Link:
http://gmna1.gm.com/eng/grc/gpds/G%20docs/GRC_3.2.9_
Global.doc
2.1.6 Product Engineering Product Engineering is responsible with a multi-disciplinary
Responsibility team regarding Key Characteristic Designation System
(KCDS) Global Standard to identify Key Product
Characteristics (KPC’s), Product Quality Characteristics
(PQC’s), Attribute Quality Characteristics (AQC’s) on the
design record and develop robust designs capable of meeting
the requirements.

Product Engineering shall also identify those Standard Care

Characteristics where process capability documentation is
required as Documentation Required (DR). The PQC’s,
KPC’s, AQC’s and the Standard Product Characteristics
designated as DR Characteristics are to be documented on
the design record (product detail drawing) and should be
commonized at the component level. The Program Execution
Team (PET) or other management review team is responsible
for the timing according to GPDP to set up the KCDS process.

The DSE together with a multidisciplinary team develops the

plan for KCDS workshops. These teams also communicate
the KCDS workshop plan to the appropriate participants per
the GM 1805 QN or GMW15049 as applicable. In GMPT this
is normally through the Product Management Team (PMT).

The respective DREs are responsible for the workshop

execution and results documentation. Engineering Process
Quality group (or equivalent) provides facilitators and the
KCDS Worksheets, when requested, to the formal workshop
process. It also provides the KCDS Worksheets, resulting
from the workshops, to the respective DRE (Product
Engineering Hardware Release Center) who becomes the
document owner. The Worksheets or other local methods
may be used to document the Key Product Characteristics
(KPC), Product Quality Characteristics (PQC), Attribute
Quality Characteristics (AQC) and Standard care
documentation required (DR) resulting from the workshops.

Product Engineering Hardware Release Centers thru Product

Management Teams (PMT), or other management review
teams, maintain Historical / Template Part Requirements and
Product Characteristics List for their components. Program
specific Part Requirements and Product Characteristics shall
be documented on the respective component UG
Data/Drawing. Hardware Release Centers will also provide
the list to Manufacturing Engineering.

Printed documents are uncontrolled – Must verify revision level prior to use Page 4 of 12

For Powertrain parts released to vehicle according to the
Global Templates, the DE/DRE must provide KCDS data
via E² according to Work instruction GRC 3.2.9….(see link)

2.1.7 Manufacturing Manufacturing Engineering is responsible to communicate the

Responsibility (inc. ME, product drawing requirements to Manufacturing by way of a
Manufacturing and Process Control Plan.
Purchasing/Supplier)
Manufacturing locations control the characteristics per the
respective GM Powertrain Global Quality requirements.
Manufacturing sites (multi-disciplinary teams lead by M.E.) are
responsible to develop control plans with Key Control
Characteristics (KCC’s) which comprehend Key Product
Characteristics (KPC’s), Product Quality Characteristics
(PQC’s), Standard Product Characteristics which have been
designated as Documentation Required (DR) and to maintain
process capability.

Suppliers and/or Manufacturing Engineering are responsible

to utilize robust processes capable of meeting the
requirements.

World Wide Purchasing is responsible to source equipment

capable of meeting requirements as specified and sourcing
components which are manufactured with processes that
meet the requirements.
2.1.8 KCDS Training GM Global Powertrain KCDS training is found on the EMP
Dimensional Engineering Team – KCDS web site training link.
2.1.9 PQC Applied to a Torque If a PQC is applied to a Torque Specification of a fastener that
Specification will be torqued at a powertrain assembly plant, then the PQC
Characteristic is to be documented on the same design record
as the Torque Spec. If a PQC is applied to a Torque
Specification of a fastener that will be torqued at a vehicle
assembly plant, then GPDS is used to capture the
requirement. See 2.1.5 of this document.

4.0 DRAWING DESIGNATIONS / SYMBOLOGY

4.1 General Drawing Note Requirement

4.1.1 General Drawing Note When one or more KCDS symbol is specified on a drawing the
following note shall be used.

FOR SPECIFICATION AND INTERPRETATION OF KCDS

BLOCK AND DRAWING SYMBOLS, SEE GM GLOBAL KCDS
STANDARD GMW15049 AND POWERTRAIN PROCEDURE
ETQ-114.
(can be found on the gmpt kcds website.)

4.2 Symbol Description

4.2.1 KPC/PQC/AQC/DR For letter and symbols size see section 4.2.1.
Symbol
Size of the symbol may be reduced for spacing provided all
elements of the symbol remain proportional.

Each KPC/PQC/AQC/DR symbol may refer to only one

specification or dimension. If a KPC/PQC/AQC/DR designation is
required both for a dimension and for one or more specification
(such as flatness) relating to that dimension, then multiple
symbols must be used.

Whenever possible, the KPC/PQC/AQC/DR symbol’s placement

should make clear which specification or dimension it refers to.
When there is no placement that will, by placement alone, make
the reference clear (such as when multiple DR symbols are used
for a single dimension and one or more of its related
specifications), then use connectors or arrows to make the
reference clear.

KPC/PQC/DR characteristics are not allowed on basic

dimensions. KPC/PQC/DR are variable characteristics and can
only be applied to variable specifications. If a variable
characteristic is applied to a specification that coincides with a
basic dimension (such as if a PQC is applied to a distance and the
tolerance is obtained from an all-around profile callout), then use
separate extension lines and arrows to make the reference clear.

When it has been determined that a KPC/PQC/AQC/DR symbol is

required and is so designated via EWO or appropriate GMPT
Design Standard, a numbered symbol is to be added to the
specification, or dimension shown on the document using the next
available number.
