Problem Statement (Planteamiento del problema):

- What is the problem that you would like to address? (¿Cuál es el problema que le gustaría abordar?)
I´d like to focus on how Malnutrition can affect children's academic learning and psychological behaviour. How Malnourished children
are emotionally responding to education.

- Where is/was that problem identified? (¿Dónde se identificó ese problema?)

The problem is identified in the school I´m teaching at. (School N410 “Los Boulevares”)

- Who is affected by that problem? (¿Quién se ve afectado por ese problema?)

My students are the children affected by this problem. They are from 9 to 13 years old.
In the following chart I will show how many students assist to “Los Boulevares School”. They are separated into different grades, as well
as they'll be categorized in male and female categories.

Children of all ages display a range of skills and characteristics, which most of the time are influenced by their perception of the situation
they are living. These situations have to do with external factors such as family relationships, exposure to drugs as well as violence and
abuse.

- Why is it a problem that should be addressed? (¿Por qué es un problema que debe ser abordado?)
This problem should be addressed because malnutrition not only affects children motor skills, but also language skills and personal-social
skills.
Personal social skills may have to do with behavioural issues. They reflect a certain behaviour according to the situation they are immersed
in. During school lessons, they can be passive, withdrawn or shy, uncooperative, destructive or aggressive. It specifically affects children's
learning and Educational skills. 4C:

SCHOOL DATE OBSERVATION

Worthington Wednesday, INSTITUTION ORGANIZATION

Elementary School, 4th October As soon as my classmate and I came to school we were very welcome. Specially by Miss Cathy Hall,
Chillicothe my mentor. She, Treva Baker and a Spanish teacher showed us different classes around the building.
We were able to observe the commitment teacher’s have concerning to their practice and students’
learning. We couldn’t talk to the school principal that day.
They school lessons are from 8:45 am to 3:10 pm. Children’s background is quite difficult due to
drug addictions their parents and close relatives have. Most of them live with their grandparents, or
any other person rho can take care of them.
Teachers and all the staff at school try to emotionally contain these children. For this reason, they
can have breakfast and lunch at school.
My colleague and I stayed in Miss Hall classes all morning.
LESSON
Lesson Structure:
Types of teaching activities: Reading comprehension and writing using the computer
Classroom management strategies: Children stay focused and concentrated on their tasks.

They are separated into 5 groups. When she gives children’s tests results, she groups them
according to their grades, by doing this, they are able to review their mistakes, think about them and
correct them; first they do it alone, then they can talk to the rest of the group and correct the
mistakes all together. This allow the student to share different points of view.
She rewarded children good behaviour, while they were working she gave the students some
chocolates.
Teaching strategies: as they were working in imagery, she could make use of all human senses
(touch, sight, taste, etc) while students were reading (This leads to a meaningful learning). Students
answered some comprehension questions, and the teacher checked. After reading they had to write a
paragraph using compound sentences, for this reason she gave the students a list of possible
synonyms to use, as well as some conjunctions.
Teacher’s use of materials: photocopies for reading, chromebooks for writing and blackboards for
specific spelling words.
Student’s use of language: as they have to write an essay in March using complex sentences, they
are developing their language by practicing.
Student interaction: Working in groups makes everything more interesting, that’s why classes are
interactive
It is important to highlight interventional teachers support. As well as Parents Organization who
help some students with learning difficulties in order to don’t leave any children behind.

Allen Elementary Friday 6th INSTITUTION ORGANIZATION

School October This is another great school we had the opportunity to visit. The school principal gave us her time to
explain her tasks at school as well as how it is organized. Teachers go to school 40 minutes before
their lessons in order to plan them carefully. According to grade levels, there are preschool grades
which take classes from Monday to Thursday (from 9am to 2:30pm) , on Friday teachers take time
for doing a lot of creative plans.
There’s also an interventional teacher who helps students specially in Reading and Maths. Teachers
in the classroom are required to help students with the curriculum, and when they come to the
interventional teacher she targets their deficit. Some grandparents also come to school and help these
students who have some learning deficit.
Theres also a service dog called Copper in the building, for the children who have diabetes, when
their sugar level go low, the dog announces this situation and some person from the staff gives them
a snack. The parents got the dog themselves.
We observed a teacher class with the principal because she had to do an evaluation as a requirement
of the State of Ohio (once or twice a year), the principal evaluates the teacher depending on what
grading they get, part of the evaluation consists on her 30 minutes observation and the other part
consists on how well students score on State tests.

LESSON
Lesson Structure:
Types of teaching activities: As we could observe many classes, there were classes in which
teachers didn’t develop student’s critical thinking, but there were also teachers who were really
dynamic and interactive.
Classroom management strategies: One of the teachers used only guided instructions with
demonstrations, this would lead into lack of critical thinking concerning to students.
Some teachers arranged small group instruction for students who need to focus on specific skills.

In classrooms, the most prevalent positive consequences are intrinsic student satisfaction resulting
from success, accomplishment, good grades, social approval and recognition, that’s we could
observe many teacher making use of sincere praises, encouraging students to develop their skills in
order to avoid any kind of blocking.

Teaching strategies: Many teachers specified clear lesson objectives, providing relevant guided
practice as well as independent practice.
Teacher’s use of materials: One of the teacher made great use of technology into the classroom, as
it is a great way to empower students to stay connected in this technological era. In this way
students keep motivated and engaged longer.
Student interaction: As many students work in groups, they can interact all the time with their
classmates. Sharing opinions and different ways of solving problems.

Tiffin Elementary Friday 13 INSTITUTION ORGANIZATION

School October My partners and I were received by the principal who explained us some students go to school 20
minutes earlier, that's why he and some teachers need to spend that time talking to them and talking
about another topic to “steal” time until 9 am.
LESSON
Lesson Structure:
Types of teaching activities: Many activities were done using photocopies and not having a
continuity or accurate objectives, as a observer it was difficult to find the specific content to be
developed.
Classroom management strategies: When talking about seating and grouping, many teachers used
the traditional one, some of them alse sit students in circle, which can lead to a great integration
between them.
Teacher’s use of materials: There was not a great use of technology, like smart boards, speakers
etc. Most teachers worked with crafts using photocopies.

Mt. Logan Monday In this building we were able to observe the same teaching strategies as in the other schools. In
Elementary School 16th kindergarten teachers start their classes giving students photocopies in which they have words
October modelling and they have to repeat the pattern. After this, they had to sing a number song and
continuing doing activities which didn´t have a link or any kind of scaffolding.
However, some other teachers were more dynamic in their teaching strategies. Students came to the
board and in groups, they solved different additions, subtraction, multiplication and divisions.
