Observation and analysis

Child’s/Children’s Name/s: Anna Maria

Date: 10/09/2018

What is the context? (Who is present, what are they doing, what happened prior to this etc.)

Leann, Anna Maria and Natalie were playing together on the outdoor playground.

What did the child/children do? (Write a detailed observation, and/or include a photograph and/or a
sample -e.g. writing or drawing - and how the child created the sample or what they were doing in the photograph)

Anna Maria and Leann saw a water hose on the playground. They picked it up and decided to
play it together. They took turns to speak through the hose. While one of them was speaking,
another child would put the hose next to her ear to hear the voice from another side of the
hose. Leann and Anna Maria held the hose and sang ‘everybody sitting down – sitting down’ a
number of times. After that, Leann started to sing ‘Twinkle, twinkle little s-t-a-r!’ loudly by
moving the hose closer to her mouth. Anna Maria laughed and followed Leann to sing loudly.
‘Spray my voice like this,’ Leann lifted the hose up and down with projecting ‘Shhhh’ sound.
Natalie came to the group and joined in Leann and Anna Maria’s play. They decided the game
rules and negotiated who would jump over the hose first. Leann and Anna Maria held each side
of the hose and used it like a jump rope. They told Natalia that it has become safe jump by
lowering the water hose and slowing down the waving speed to let Natalie jump over. Once
Natalie jumped over, they swapped the position to take turns to jump over the water hose.

What learning/ development/dispositions/relationships/interactions did I observe? How

does what is happening in this observation link to the Learning Outcomes in the Early Years Learning Framework?

Anna Maria demonstrates their collaboration and good turn taking in her cooperative play. Anna
Maria uses the water hose to construct conceptual play as they give new meaning to the water
hose (Fleer, 2013). Anna Maria demonstrates her capabilities to engaging in self-directed play
and spontaneously use resource to play and create new ideas (Kearns, 2010). Anna Maria is
able to engage in respectful social interaction by initiate turn taking and co-operation. According
to Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved
learners and Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators, Anna Maria contributes her
ideas and experiences in play and small group discussion and negotiation, as well as initiate
and contribute to play experiences emerging from her own ideas.

What can I do to extend the child’s learning or development and/or to promote positive
dispositions and/or build positive relationships and promote interactions?

To extend Anna Maria’s learning of sound transmission, I would set up an experience to make
paper cup phones for the child to create and explore the ideas.
