VERBS SEBAGAI COMPLEMENTS

Pada beberapa kalimat sebuah Verb (kata kerja) dapat mengambil verb lainnya menjadi
Complement (objek) dan bukan noun . Verb yang berfungsi sebagai complement harus dalam
bentuk infinitive ( to + verb ) atau dalam bentuk gerunds ( Verb + -ing ). Berikut ini Verb
yang akan selalu diikuti oleh infinitive dan Verb yang akan selalu diikuti oleh gerunds .

Verbs yang selalu diikuti oleh infinitive

Agree attempt claim decide demand desire expect fail forget hesitate
hope intend learn need offer plan prepare pretend refuse seem
strive tend want wish

Example:

John expects to begin studying law next semester

The committee decided to postpone the meeting

The president will attempt to reduce inflation

Verbs yang selalu diikuti oleh Gerunds

admit appreciate avoid can't help consider

delay deny enjoy finish mind

miss postpone practice quit recall

report resent resist resume risk suggest

Example:

He admitted stealing the jewels

We enjoyed seeing the scenery

She was considering buying a new car

Note:

- kita juga bisa membuat kalimat negatif dengan menambahkan not sebelum infinitive atau
gerund

He decided not to buy the car


We regretted not going to the party last night

-ada juga kata kerja yang bisa diikuti oleh infinitive dan gerund , sbb:

begin can't stand continue dread

hate like love prefer

regret start try stop remember forget

He started to study after dinner

He started studying after dinner

Verbs + Prepositions yang selalu diikuti oleh Gerund

Approve of be better off count on depend on

give up insist on keep on put off rely on succeed in think about think of
worry about object to look forward to confess to

Example:

He gave up smoking because of his wife

She insist on taking bus instead of train

Adjectives + Prepositions yang selalu diikuti oleh Gerund

accustomed to afraid of capable of fond of intent on interested in


successful in tired of

Example:

They are afraid of getting fired

We are accustomed to sleeping late on weekends

Nouns + Prepositions yang selalu diikuti Gerund

choice of excuse for intention of method for/of possibility of reason for

Example:

George has no excuse for dropping out of school

There is a possibility of acquiring this property at a good price


Note:

- Intinya, semua Preposition jika diikuti oleh kata kerja ( Verb ) makan verb tersebut harus
dalam bentuk Gerund .

- Begitu juga jika ada Pronoun (kata ganti) setelah Prepositon , maka pronoun tersebut harus
dalam bentuk complement pronoun ( me, you, them, us, him, her, it )

Example:

He is eager to see his family

It is dangerous to drive in this weather

It is difficult to pass this test
