Protecting our children

For millennia, parents have had the awesome responsibility of
protecting their young. This Natural History Museum, the location
for our dinner, is a perfect setting for us to begin to take a serious
look at the challenges parents face in the upbringing of our young.
Never before have we as parents been faced with such a deadly,
global threat as we do with drugs. Unlike many other threats that
our children face, this one is 100% preventable. We can prevent
our children from knowing the harm and misery that drug misuse
can cause.

It is only by working together, on a global level, can we tackle this

problem. We may never fully eradicate drug abuse amongst our
children, but the more protective factors we build into them, the
better opportunities they will have to succeed.

I am so very pleased that you have chosen to join us this evening.

Your support of Mentor’s work will help countless children and their
families be empowered to live a healthy life free from drugs misuse.

For those of you that are familiar with Mentor, thank you for your
continued support of its work. For those that here for the first time,
I sincerely hope that you will continue to stand by us as we
continue to grow and tackle this global challenge.

Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden

Message from

The Rt hon
the lord mancroft
Chairman, The Mentor Foundation UK

There are lots of organisations in the UK that focus on drugs and drug
addicts. But Mentor UK is the only organisation that works exclusively
towards preventing young people from suffering the harm that results
when they take drugs – which means any substance, legal or illegal,
that damages their health, well-being and future. We don’t waste
money campaigning or playing politics: we simply work to keep
children out of harm’s way.

The strongest weapon in our armoury is that we are part of an international

organisation that draws on the knowledge and experience gained from
many different projects in many different countries all over the world.
All this experience, knowledge and expertise is researched, peer reviewed
and only then disseminated as “best practice”. We believe in evidence,
not guesswork.

Although we work alongside the UN, WHO, governments, government

departments, and NGOs, we are almost entirely financed by donations
from individuals, corporations and charitable trusts. Which means parents
and grandparents – like you - with many different hats on, helping us to
protect their children and grandchildren, for which we are very grateful.

Finally, I would like to thank our committee for all their hard work in making
this evening possible. I hope you have a wonderful evening and thank
you all for being here tonight.

The Rt Hon The Lord Mancroft

Chairman, The Mentor Foundation UK

The Mentor Foundation (Mentor) is a non-profit, non-government organisation with a mission
to prevent drug abuse and promote the health and well-being of children and young people.
Mentor is committed to providing and promoting the most promising and best possible
practices in drug abuse prevention and the promotion of health and well-being in a culturally
adapted environment.
Her Majesty The Queen of Sweden is its President.

Mentor has an international remit for drug prevention. Mentor International is the central co-ordinating
body of Mentor. It is developing national and regional organisations which operate as part of the “Mentor
Family”. Currently these are: Mentor Arabia; Mentor Colombia; Mentor Belgium, Mentor Germany; Mentor
Lithuania; Mentor Sweden; Mentor UK; and Mentor USA and are planning for a Mentor in Africa, China,
Italy and Venezuela.

The focus of Mentor’s work is to undertake, develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate best or
promising practice in drug prevention internationally. Mentor seeks to help those working with young
people to find the best possible ways to implement the most effective drug prevention initiatives.

Prevention
• Of drug misuse and the harm that drugs can cause
• Through promotion of healthy lifestyles and choices
• To identify and disseminate promising and best practice

Opportunity
• To be involved in healthy alternatives
• To acquire relevant knowledge, attitudes and skills
• To become healthy, confident and competent members of society

Protection
• From the risk factors that can lead to drug misuse and other risk behaviours
• With the protective factors that will help to make drug misuse and other health
risk behaviours less likely
• From the pressures, stresses and circumstances that lead to drug misuse and
other health risk behaviours

09
Mentor UK
All the work that Mentor UK undertakes is externally evaluated and informed by Mentor UK’s values
which include a commitment to what works and striving for excellence. All our activities focus on
improving the quality of prevention work across the UK. By disseminating findings from its projects,
Mentor UK helps practitioners and policy makers to gather the information and tools that are needed to
ensure prevention initiatives are informed by current research findings and expand the evidence base for
effective prevention. This adds value to others’ activities, whether they be government or local service
providers. Our international partners and international scientific networks assist the work that Mentor UK
undertakes.

One of Mentor UK’s core values is a belief that young people are able to make sensible, healthy choices
and can take responsibility for their actions. We support initiatives which involve young people in
planning, delivering and/or evaluating activities. Young people inform Mentor UK’s work via the Young
People’s Reference Groups for our projects. Partnership is key to our work.

Our strategy throughout 2005 has been as follows:

• To influence policy
• To support good practice
• To support research
• To increase profile (for prevention and Mentor)

• Over the last 10 years Mentor has developed, supported and undertaken
projects and programmes in over 40 countries and empowered over a million
children to stay away from drugs and other harmful lifestyles.

10
Helping Mentor
Mentor is currently seeking funding for the following programmes both in the UK and internationally:

Young People Involvement Project

Young people at risk are often the subject of intervention programmes and projects to prevent or tackle
drug and alcohol misuse. Mentor UK is working with a group of diverse young people from around the
UK to train them to tell us how to make prevention work. This group of young people will present their
initial recommendations to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Drugs and Drug Misuse early in 2007.

Coastal and Ex-Mining Areas Project

Mentor UK is currently working in 12 coastal and ex-mining areas – some of the most depressed areas
of the country – to support local projects working with young people at risk. Working alongside local
community groups, we are running 12 projects, providing mentors for vulnerable young people,
supporting parents under pressure and providing activities which divert young people away from
problematic drug or alcohol use.

Grandparents Project
Many of the most vulnerable young people in our communities are brought up by their grandparents
when their parents, who are misusing drugs and alcohol, are no longer able to care for them. These
children are frequently coping with very difficult issues which can include the death of a parent or
parental imprisonment. Yet grandparents caring for these young people often do so in isolation with little
or no support. Mentor is working with some of these grandparents to develop support for them and to
raise awareness among professionals concerning their needs and the problems that they face.

11
Prevention Online
Mentor Prev-Online will be an international online e-learning program consisting of different drug
prevention modules that will be developed, monitored and supported by Mentor USA staff and Mentor’s
international consultants, through its Scientific Advisory Network. The programme will be targeted at two
key groups: professionals (teachers, community workers, prevention specialists, and outreach workers);
and parents and caregivers. Mentor Prev-Online will provide an opportunity to learn the basics of drug
abuse prevention through the medium of the Internet.

A letter of condolence from one addict to the parents of another who
tragically lost their daughter. If Mentor achieves its aims, there will
be far fewer like this to break our hearts.

Dear Mrs Powell,

I read the sad news yesterday and felt I had to write to I exist as an addict on a methadone programme but I
you to try and help ease the pain and confusion you must don’t really participate in life, and once the programme
be feeling. I only knew Louise from St. Andrews really, is ceased I will lose my job and all that I gained whilst on
but I had met her since then at an N.A. meeting and I prescribed drugs so I can see why people don’t bother
was so pleased to see that she seemed to be doing so working in the first place. The only way I can see addicts
well, that it came as all the more of a s hock when I read recovering is if it was possible to shut off the memory
what happened. Although I was not altogether surprised, somehow, because as long ….. I know Louise caused
as so many people have a relapse after a good spell, just you all sorts of heartache as I have my own parents.
as I have done and many others too. I stole from them, abused them and did things which I
didn’t think I was capable of.
As an addict myself however, I do want to assure you
that there was absolutely nothing you could have done to However you mustn’t take it personally because an
help, as once the drug has got its grip, nothing anybody addict does these things because the drug has twisted
says or does can release your mind from the obsessional his mind, and underneath all this is the sensitive, caring
urge that keeps telling you that you will never be fulfilled person who probably loved you a great deal but the drug
without it. The cruellest thing about it is that it robs you prevented her from showing her love. The most painful
of happiness and sadness, drains you of energy and thing of all is knowingly abusing people you love and not
makes your sole purpose in life revolve around the act of being able to put a stop to it and the loneliness it brings.
pursuing the drug and pursuing the money to pay for it.
Its like Cinderella at the Ball, you are constantly chasing I know all this is probably terribly upsetting but although I
a deadline. The next dose you will turn into a pathetic do feel that it is a tragedy and a waste of such a beautiful
heap, unable to do even the simplest of tasks, unable to person, I do feel that in my mind, the tragedy had already
function, and with mental and physical torment battling occurred once the addiction set in and I feel that the
with your body. result was inevitable and that If she was still with us she
would have been leading an agonising excuse for a life.
The frightening thing for addicts trying to get off is that
they have been robbed of normal emotions and have I do hope that you will gain strength in knowing that
hidden from reality for so long that once off, they feel Louise has moved on to a place where she can find the
stripped and naked and the emotions are so raw that freedom she so desperately sought and never found.
they feel close to madness almost like an onlooker in
an alien world.
Yours with love and thoughts,
Even when an addict has been off for some time, the
drug still follows his every footstep and is a constant
threat that eats away the soul and makes life not worth
living.
Caroline Connor
Because addicts feel like they are living on borrowed time
they lose all ambition and aspirations in the knowledge
that their career could break up in a day if they relapse
and after all the effort it took to build in the first place.
The cycle goes on and each time you relapse it’s that
little bit harder to climb up to where you reached off drugs.

National Barbershop
Youth Chorus
Directed by Rob Barber

The National Barbershop Youth Chorus is now almost one year old,
and what a year it has been! Since its formation at a workshop in
August 2005 the chorus has developed in an incredible fashion and
it’s a testament to the work of Timm Barkworth, BABS Youth
Development Manager, and his support team. Following that initial
workshop there have been three rehearsals, held in Leicester, West
Midlands and Chesham and a first formal appearance at the Annual
Convention of the British association of Barbershop Singers.
The chorus comprises young men aged 25 years or younger who want to
sing music in the barbershop style. What is the “barbershop style”?
Essentially, and without getting too technical, it’s four part unaccompanied
close harmony singing. Why just young men? One of the limiting factors
of close harmony singing is that the four voice parts do have to be
relatively close together, and combining male and female voices is rarely
attempted.
The National Barbershop Youth Chorus is an exciting development in
British barbershop singing, but it is only part of a wider strategy to reach
out and encourage young men to take up singing. We believe that there is
tremendous scope for the Youth Chorus to work with young people from
all backgrounds and environments, and that barbershop singing represents
a low-cost high-reward opportunity to engage with those who feel
disenfranchised. The challenge of this style of music, the camaraderie,
and the emotional highs that are realised when making chords “ring”, all
help to make barbershop singing a life changing experience.
