Model Selection

Selection Procedure 1 – Based on Heat of Rejection Method

Heat of Rejection Method is typically Example
applied with centrifugal, hermetic reciprocating, Given:
Type of Compressor Hermetic Compressor

Refrigerant Type R22
Heat of Rejection by the compressor loads can be
calculated by using the following two formulas: Selection
1) Determine Total Heat Rejection
Open Compressors Evaporator - 850 tons x 12,000 = 10,200,000 BTU/hr
Heat Rejection = Compressor - 55.0 KW x 3413 = 187,715 BTU/hr
Evaporator Load (BTU/hr) + Compressor BHP x 2545
Total Heat of Rejection = 10,387,715 BTU/hr
Hermetic Compressors

Model Selection

Selection Procedure 2 – Based on Evaporator Ton Method

This method is only used when using an Example

open type reciprocating compressor application. Given:
Evaporator Head Load 500 tons
The condenser model numbers are equal to Entering Wet Bulb Temperature 74 ºF
the capacity of the evaporator condenser at Condensing Temperature 100 °F
Suction Temperature 10 °F
standard conditions of 105 °F condensing,
Refrigerant Type R134A
40 °F suction, and 78 °F wet bulb temperatures Unit Size -01
for R22 or R134 refrigerants. Selections using
non-standard conditions can be accomplished Selection
by using Tables 4 and 5 to select an adjustment Evaporative Capacity Factor = 1.08
Suction Pressure Capacity Factor = 1.09
factor. The adjustment factor would be
500 tons x 1.08 x 1.09 = 589 adjusted tons
multiplied by the system heat load in tons.
Then select the model that has an evaporator The following selection in the -01 size meets
ton load equal or greater to the calculated result. the capacity requirements.

Freeze Prevention

When the ambient air temperature falls below 32 ºF, the water in unit can freeze.

During shutdown, water collects in the pan and may freeze solid. Freeze protection is achieved
by adding heat to the remaining water in the unit or by draining the unit and all exposed piping
at shutdown.

Electric Pan Heaters

There are automatic basin water heater systems ■ Stainless steel electric immersion heater(s).
