In “The Delinquent Summer of my Youth,” Marek Fuchs reveals his teenage troubles and

realizes he was just being a normal teen. He used to hang out with the same six guy friends and

they never had any girlfriends. Instead, they smoked, stole food, broke into a swim club,

vandalized property and got into trouble. Today, as an adult, he worries that he had ADHD, so

he goes and talks to two doctors. They both said he was completely normal. Now, when he gets

together with his friends they just laugh about it and have no regrets.

During the reading of, “The Delinquent Summer of my Youth” I had this deep,

undeniable curiosity to investigate how recognized ADHD was in the 1980’s. This thirst comes

from growing up in the 80’s with a sibling who clearly would have met the criteria for this

diagnosis however, because he was deaf in one ear doctors labeled his disability for his

behavioral dispositions. Researching the ADHD Timeline, I came across an article by Chris

ILiades, MD, Medically Reviewed by Lindsey Marcellin, MD, MPH “The Past, Present, and Future

of ADHD”. In the early 1900’s ADHD was considered a moral problem of children or their

parents. It wasn’t until 1980 society first heard the term “ADD”. So, was Mr. Marek Fuch being

a rebellious, bored teenager going through normal teenage adolescents? Maybe it was his

intuition that led him to see two doctors as an adult in 2001 sensing something still was not

right in his seeming- less picture perfect life. It wasn’t until 2003 the FDA approved the first

non-stimulant drug for ADHD and the first to be approved for use in adults.

I chose the first image because I believe Mr. Fuch’s youth can really be brought to life

through this photograph. The second photo I added as a bonus because somehow I felt the

poorest of choices just part of life at times, everyone has a Skelton tucked away somewhere,

Good can come from them with determination, I think Mr. Fuch and his friends are fine

examples.
