THE SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE: IDENTITY WRIT LARGE

Photography by Matthew Black

OCTOBER 15 - NOVEMBER 13

Opening Reception & Meet the Artist

Friday, October 15, 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Sister VixXxen as Marcos | Marcos as Sister VixXxen, archival pigment prints, 2009

Since 2007, Matthew Black has documented the outrageous and provocative social activist
group, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Members of this international Sisterhood take on
the identities of 21st century nuns, dedicated to "promulgating universal joy, expiating
stigmatic guilt, and serving the community." Far more than street performers or typical drag
queens, they use the art of drag to raise awareness for the LGBT community, educate about
safe sex & AIDS, raise money for local non-profits, and advocate for human rights.

In Black's engrossing, public-private portraits of Sisters in the Seattle chapter he visibly

captures their transformation between various personas and brings to light the deeper,
universal question we each ask ourselves - Who am I really?

AMERICA’S SPECIAL PROVIDENCE: SYMBOLS, FREEMASONS, AND THE NATION'S CAPITAL

A distinguished panel of Masonic leaders—Jeff Ballou, Inessa Mischenko, Alan Peterson, and Marcus Trelaine—will
discuss the secrets architecture of nation’s capital and influential role played by George Washington, other
Freemasons, and African-American astronomer Benjamin Banneker. To explore the meaning of symbols and
Freemasonry, Professor Patrick Mendis briefly presents his book, Commercial Providence: The Secret Destiny of
the American Empire, in which he puts forward a provocative new theory and picks up where Dan Brown’s The
Lost Symbol left off, giving readers a consummate guide to America and its secret mission in the world. In his
foreword to the book, Professor Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, president emeritus of the George Washington
University, writes: “Unlike Dan Brown in The Lost Symbol, Patrick Mendis has a serious scholarly purpose . . . seen
through the eyes of the Founding Fathers and the Masonic Architect of the Universe.” Senator Thomas Daschle
describes the book, “unique and insightful.” Past Masonic Grand Master of DC Akram Elias says that Mendis is a
“mind-reader of the Founding Fathers . . .” Through a vision of Masonic universal brotherhood and E Pluribus
Unum, the author will explain why China is paying for America’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as our
national debt, and arrive at a highly unexpected conclusion only privy to Masonic brethren like George
Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Paul Revere.

Panel moderated by Alan Patterson

Alan Patterson is the first African-American presiding officer of Capitol Hill’s 205-year old Masonic Naval Lodge No. 4. He is
an information technology project manager with a Fortune 500 company and a former DC Public Schools elementary teacher.

Jeff Ballou is the deputy news editor at Al-Jazeera Television—English and a past presiding officer of the 184-year old Social
Lodge No. 1, the oldest of the Prince Hall (African-American) Masonic lodges in DC.

Inessa Mischenko is the president of Maryland Masonic Research Society and the director of operations at Convergent
Wealth Advisors in Maryland.

Marcus Trelaine is the Worshipful Master of Cincinnatus Lodge and the chief operating officer of the Children’s Rights Council
in DC.
Author Patrick Mendis is an affiliate professor of public and international affairs at George Mason University and a former
American diplomat and military professor. He wrote the book while serving as a visiting foreign policy scholar at Johns
Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies.

Solidarity and the World

with the introduction by

film director Jolanta Kessler-Chojecka

celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the "Solidarność" Movement

When in August 1980 strikes broke out in Poland and "Solidarity" movement was formed, it was clear to the world that something
important happened. Within a month, the very first behind the iron curtain, independent from totalitarian state, massive trade union
organization appeared.

People of the world watched the non-violent struggle of the Polish workers for the right to freedom and dignified life. It appeared
possible, even if for some time only, to overcome the barrier which had divided Europe. Governments and parliaments, political,
social and labor organizations, church and charity societies wanted to support "Solidarity" by sending financial help, developing
contacts, advising in organizational affairs. Thanks to journalists, writers, artists, intellectuals, trade unionists and many people of
good will, who decided to be with us in difficult moments, what was happening in the Gdańsk shipyard in August 1980 it was
happening before the world's very eyes. This not formalized and reluctantly tolerated by the communist authorities co-operation
contributed to stronger "Solidarity". It proved that the Polish democratic movement was not alone in its struggle. That was even more
important after the martial law was introduced in December 1981. The reaction of the world was immediate. In several countries
spontaneous protests and manifestations were growing in numbers, various supporting committees were created, after just a few weeks
break the funds and equipment was transferring again, this time illegally. To less extend the support for "Solidarity" was visible in the
countries of communist bloc.

The film "Solidarity and the world" is a record of feelings, reflections and memories of some of those people without whom
"Solidarity" would not have survived. Among them there are people well-known in the world, performing responsible duties in their
countries and international organizations. Their relations embrace the happenings of August 1980 but also the subsequent events
which resulted in negotiations with the union and legalizations of "Solidarity".

Jolanta Kessler-Chojecka is a director of many documentary and educational films, which due to
political reasons could have been shown only after the collapse of communism in 1989. Among these
are films about the history of Radio Free Europe, Soviet secret services in the Polish People's
Republic, the PULS underground publishing house which functioned during the 1980s, a film about
Col. Ryszard Kukliński, and Rakowiecka Street prison in Warsaw, which was infamous for cruelty of
its communist administrators. Her three films about political changes in Poland during the year 1989
were called a "New Trilogy" by reviewers mentioning that this was material to stir the heart. No
doubt, her interest in modern history is related to the fact that she had spent the years 1980-1991 abroad, working for Radio Free
Europe in New York and Paris. At that time she worked with the émigré press, gaining experience in making films for French
television. Her husband Mirosław Chojecki ran the émigré center for publishing and film making in Paris. After she had returned from
emigration she produced documentary films with political and historical topics. She made two films about Free Europe Radio. Jan
Nowak-Jeziorański entrusted her his will with full confidence.

She was a lecturer at the M. Wańkowicz Journalist Academy in Warsaw. She also worked as a director of Center of Foreign Press in
Warsaw (currently Press Freedom Monitoring Center). Currently she is a Counselor at the Permanent Mission of Republic of Poland
to the United Nations Office in Geneva.

Selected films: "Underground Editors" (1992), "A Story of the Free Europe Radio" (1994), "A Muppet Show in Buzuluk" (1994), "A
Mass with the Priest Jerzy" (1995), "Solidarity" (1995), "I Cannot Stop to Be a Lady" (1996), "Poland in the KGB and GRU Empire"
(1997), "The Case of Colonel Kukliński" (1997), "Polish Library in Paris" (1998), "Rakowiecka Prison" (1999), "That year 1989"

Our mission at Charter Theater's First Draft is to develop audiences that love
live theater as we develop new plays. Through our free reading series, which is
designed to incorporate audience feedback and discussion with playwrights, and
other activities scheduled to launch on the Web in 2011, we intend to encourage
audiences to explore, experience and engage in the wonderful world of local
theater through free, interactive access to the development and presentation of
new plays.

As we execute our mission in the coming years, we plan to give special attention
to local, DC-area playwrights, and to new plays that represent populations who
have traditionally either been under served and/or underrepresented by the
theater community.

First Draft is supported in part by Arlington County through the Arlington Commission for the Arts and the
Cultural Affairs Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Resources. The First Draft
Reading Series is also made possible in part by the warmth and generosity of the Share Fund and the Drama

The Center for Legal and Judicial Studies is honored to host Judge A. Raymond Randolph as the third speaker of our
aptly named Joseph Story Distinguished Lecture.

The namesake of the lecture—the eminent jurist Joseph Story—became the youngest Associate Justice ever to
serve on the United States Supreme Court when he was appointed by President Madison in 1812. Story made a
significant mark on American law in his thirty-three years on the bench, but his greatest contribution to
jurisprudence is his renowned Commentaries on the Constitution, in which he set forth a philosophy of judicial
restraint. This lecture series celebrates his legacy.

We are honored that Judge Randolph has agreed to offer this year’s lecture, “The Guantanamo Mess,” in which he
will offer his thoughts on how the courts have handled questions of military detention and trial in wartime.

The Pacific and the Australian American Relationship:

New Opportunities and Challenges

by Hon. Kim Beazley, AC

Ambassador of Australia to the United States

Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 5:30 pm

Mortara Center for International Studies

The Australian American relationship plays across the Pacific. How will change in and around the Pacific affect
the Australian American relationship? What are the future drivers of this important relationship?

Few are as well placed as Ambassador Beazley to comment on the challenges and opportunities in the Australian
American relationship. He was a member of Federal Parliament from 1980-2007. He was a Minister in the Hawke
and Keating Labor Governments (1983-96) holding, at various times, the portfolios of Defence, Finance,
Transport and Communications, Employment Education and Training, Aviation, and Special Minister of State. He
was Deputy Prime Minister (1995-96) and Leader of the Australian Labor Party and Leader of the Opposition
(1996-01 and 2005-06). Ambassador Beazley served on parliamentary committees, including the Joint
Intelligence Committee and the Joint Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee.

After his retirement from politics in 2007, Ambassador Beazley was appointed Winthrop Professor in the
Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Western Australia. In July 2008 he was
appointed Chancellor of the Australian National University, a position he held until December 2009. Ambassador
Beazley took up his appointment as Ambassador to the United States of America in February 2010.

"The Eye Behind the Camera"

by Elia Kahvedjian

October 22, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

The Jerusalem Fund Gallery
24225 Virginia Avenue NW

Washington, DC 20037
No RSVP Necessary

Elia Kahvedjian was born in 1910 in Ourfa, Turkey and

passed away April 1999. When Elia came to Jerusalem, he
was fascinated by Jerusalem’s historical places, landscapes
and characters and began taking pictures in 1924. From
there Elia devoted himself to photography, catching the
scenes and lives of Jerusalem’s streets.

The Palestine Center is an independent think-tank committed to communicating reliable and objective
information about the Palestinian political experience to American policy makers, journalists, students and
the general public. Established in 1991, it is the educational program of the Jerusalem Fund for Education
and Community Development.

The Palestine Center brings together people and resources within the American and Palestinian
communities to educate about Palestine and the Palestinian people's ongoing quest for sovereignty on
their land, civil and political rights and an end to Israeli occupation.

The need for an organization such as The Palestine Center can be found in the effects of the economic,
cultural and political oppression Palestinians have endured and which continues on a daily basis in East
Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the surrounding refugee camps and for Palestinians world-wide
as they struggle to retain their homeland.

Palestinians' ability to maintain their daily lives and strengthen their democratic political system depends
on international humanitarian and non-governmental organizations such as The Palestine Center.

Dear Ashley,

Thank you for your wonderful support that has helped SOME to
provide more than 1,000 meals to the hungry each day,
contributed to the daily treatment of nearly 50 homeless patients
in our Medical and Dental Clinics, and supported the operation of
long-term services like job training and affordable housing.

Last year, we asked you to take part in the Thanksgiving Day

Trot for Hunger to help the growing number of homeless people
in our community. Your enthusiastic response enabled us to
accommodate record demand and kept people from going hungry.

I hope that you will continue to help SOME feed and care for the still growing number of
homeless individuals and families by signing up for SOME’s 40th Anniversary Thanksgiving Day
Trot for Hunger, and by encouraging others to join or sponsor you.

The Trot for Hunger 5K timed race and family fun walk will be held at 8:30 am on November 25
in West Potomac Park, and will be preceded by the Little Turkey One Mile Fun Run at 8:00 am
(no separate registration is required for the Little Turkey; all Trot for Hunger registrants are
eligible to participate.) Registration is $23 through November 15 and is available online now.

We hope that you will start your Thanksgiving with SOME and thousands of energetic runners
and walkers, trotting to help the homeless and hungry. Please contact Tracy Monson at (202)
797-8806, ext. 1093 or at trotforhunger@some.org for additional information.

October's Fringe Artist is Ben Egerman hailing from Minneapolis,
Minnesota. Ben created The Great Ben Egerman Theatre
Adventure! in the fall of 2009 in order to present his touring
production of its namesake's one-man show, Do Not Kill Me, Killer
Robots. It is driven by his desire to tour a show in a wide variety of
locations, with a low-budget, do-it-yourself aesthetic. The show's set
and props, including a large number of electronic props and sound
equipment, are all built by Ben from scratch, designed to occupy no
more space than a desk, all are able to run off a single electrical
outlet, and easily fit into the trunk of a Honda Civic.

Ben will be back at the Fort for fallFRINGE November 17-21. If you
missed his show during this years Fringe Festival or just want to see it
again... don't miss what the Washington Post called "...solidly funny".

Q As a self-producing artist, what qualities make for a good

show idea in your opinion, and what is typically your first step in realizing your artistic vision?

A ... Sometimes, I'll try damn hard, but realize that things like "The Secret Life of Pirate Jesus" made a
really funny sketch, but a really awful full-length play, and fail to make it past the second scene. P.S. yes,
that's a real example. His ship was called the Holy Cutlass.

National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree
program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship assignment. Fellows
receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, and full
payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing personal and professional development.

The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard
M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance
learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements.

Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000 multicultural, multiracial
alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and who are effecting positive changes in
communities nationally and internationally. Individually and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable
and just society while serving as role models for future generations.

Fellows apply their expertise in the public sector, contributing their newly acquired leadership skills to public
service for the betterment of their communities and the nation. They return to their former or new occupations
more experienced in public policy decision-making and are better prepared to make a strong commitment to
equity and social justice, thereby fulfilling the mission of the program. Finally, Fellows give back to the
organization that supported them, recognizing that their ongoing commitment, engagement and involvement
and/or annual giving will help to secure the future of National Urban Fellows.

To all our partners in the DC region -

Thanks again for your support of StreetWise Partners' programs over the last 12 months. We are excited about further
developing and improving our Career Ventures program, as well as our Alumni workshops over the next year, to better help
motivated low-income individuals. Currently 77% of participants have a job, a promotion or pay-rise, or are enrolled in a
career advancing education program within 6 months of starting our Career Ventures program. We want to get this up to
100%!

I hope you will continue to support our efforts as a volunteer, and we have a new Mock Interview Day on July 13th (downtown
Washington, D.C., 6:30pm - 9:00pm) that we're offering to individuals who are applying to participate in our Fall
program. Volunteers will conduct three mock interviews in different interviewer ‘roles’ - CEO, Line Manager,
HR Manager – to give the experience of different types of interviews. Volunteers then give feedback about their
performance and their resume. You can RSVP to volunteer at this event by responding to this email!

If you're interested in helping us with our current challenge campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of June (last day of the
campaign today!), then you can text the word ‘partners’ to 20222 now to donate $10 to support our incredible programs. An
easy way to make a difference, without even leaving your desk! (more details below).

Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

Lauren

First, THANK YOU so much for your help in making this year’s BBQ Battle such a success! We could not have done it
without you. Know that you made a difference, and we very appreciative of those who choose to serve with us or on our
behalf.

You are receiving this email because you marked on your Volunteer Form (when you signed up for BBQ Battle) that you
were interested in other volunteer opportunities with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. PLEASE read on about
the process to becoming a regular volunteer with us as well as some general volunteer roles that may interest you.

ABOUT THE PROCESS:

In order to regularly volunteer at a Club, the applicant must complete, sign, and return the application packet. This will
include a registration form (attached), a background investigation consent form (attached), a fingerprint card, AND a copy
of their photo ID. Fingerprint cards can be mailed to the applicant or picked up from a Club location. Attached you will find
a listing of fingerprinting agencies with which you can make an appointment to complete the card.

**Please note that applicants under the age of 18 are not required to undergo a fingerprint check, though they
MUST complete the background investigation consent and permission form for minors and have each form
signed by legal parent/guardian. Be sure to include ALL required information including social security number
and signature(s)**

ABOUT YOUR ROLE:

Volunteer roles vary as specific Club needs change. Applicant's interests and skills may also determine a potential
volunteer role. General opportunities could easily include tutors, mentors, program aides, administrative aides,
maintenance, beautification/repair, events/fundraising, or even pro bono services based on your skills. BGCGW also
offers summer programming at most locations. Summer schedules often times include field trips, educational enrichment
workshops, sports/fitness activities, arts & crafts, and more!

I can help narrow it down by your specific interests or region (MD, DC, VA). Speaking with staff at a specific Club is
another great way to help select a location. We have 8 Clubs in VA, 8 in DC, and 2 in MD. I have attached a listing of our
Clubs for your review. This directory includes Club addresses, phone numbers, and contacts.

Please don't hesitate to let me know how/if I can be of further assistance OR if you have any colleagues/classmates that
may be interested as well. Thanks again for your recent contribution; we hope to see you again soon!!!

Americans for Tax Reform is accepting

applications for fall internships.

Applications are due July 16, 2010.

We believe in a system in which taxes are simpler, fairer, flatter, more visible, and lower than they are today. The
government's power to control one’s life derives from its power to tax. We believe that power should be
minimized. ATR was founded in 1985 by Grover Norquist at the request of President Reagan.

Internship Description: Americans for Tax Reform offers the chance to work alongside some of the best political
advocates in Washington, as well as the opportunity for increasing responsibility. Interns are assigned to work on
policy issues side by side with members of our staff. As a key part of the ATR team, interns work on projects such
as the

Taxpayer Protection Pledge(both federal and state candidates pledge not to raise taxes), the American
Shareholders Association(focusing on eliminating the Death Tax, expanding Lifetime Savings Accounts and
Retirement Savings Accounts, and social security reform), and the Cost of Government Day, a report identifying
and calculating government spending as a cost to taxpayers.

Qualifications: Duties include, but are not limited to, legislative and political research, drafting policy briefs,
writing press releases, blogging, attending meetings, and assisting with events. Applicants must be organized,
responsible, independent, and effective under deadlines. Exceptional written and oral communication skills are a
must. Interns are required to have a professional demeanor and phone manner. Applicants should have a strong
interest in tax reform and economic policy, and a fundamental orientation toward liberty. ATR accepts applications
from undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. Full-time and part-time interns are paid hourly. The
positions can be taken for credit through the applicant's home university or college, coinciding with spring,
summer, and fall semester dates.

Office Location: Our offices are ideally located at 722 12th Street, NW, in the heart of Washington D.C. ATR is
Metro accessible-located across the street from Metro Center.

Application: Please send a resume, a short writing sample on a topic relating to ATR's mission (no more
than five pages), a cover letter with your interest in ATR outlined, and a list of three references
to:cboyer@atr.org. Please use ‘Internship Application’ as the subject line of your email.

motivated, low-income individuals to be able to achieve the job they want. Our unique model matches volunteer
mentors with motivated participants who work with them over 14 weeks to develop their employability skills,
including hard skills (computer training, resume creation) and soft skills (communication, professional etiquette,
networking). Together, we help economically distressed adults develop the job-search competence, the necessary
soft and hard skills, and the access to professional networks to secure sustainable and career-advancing
employment and be employable in the rapidly changing global economy.

BECOME A MENTOR

The next cycles will begin in March 2010 with options to mentor on Wednesday evenings (6:30-9:00pm, March 3rd
- June 9th) or on Saturday afternoons (11am-2pm, March 6th - June 12th). Both programs are held in downtown
Washington, D.C. If you are interested in being a mentor on one of these programs, you will need to complete an
application at www.streetwisepartners.org/application/volunteer. You are also invited to attend a volunteer
information session at 6:30pm on Wednesday, February 10th, to find out more about the program. To RSVP for the

different interviewer ‘roles’ - CEO, Line Manager, HR Manager – to give the mentees experience of different types of
interview. Volunteers then give mentees feedback about their performance and their resume.

- SPEED NETWORKING. Listen to mentees' 30 second elevator pitches and give them feedback on how to better
‘sell’ themselves.

CAAB is recruiting volunteers for the DC EITC Campaign tax season (February-April 2010). Our greatest need is for Savings
Promoters – volunteers who would talk to people waiting to get their taxes done about taking money management classes,
savings, direct depositing their refund, and the like. No experience necessary, we train you.

We are also looking for tax preparation volunteers able to work at East of the River tax sites, during daytime hours, or who
speak Spanish, Chinese, or Amharic. It’s a good, low-commitment volunteer opportunity because it’s only 3 months. See the
email below and please pass on to your networks!

Thanks,

Emily Appel

You Can Change Lives,

One Return at a Time

This tax season you can be a part of a tremendous effort that brings over $9 million
into the homes of DC’s low-income working families each year.

Volunteer as a Savings Promoter or Tax Preparer with the

DC Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign
(www.dceitc.org)!

Our Success Depends On Volunteers Like You!

Make a Difference
Each tax return completed by a volunteer preparer can raise a low-income working family’s income by
more than $6,000.

This income boost can help a working family get out of debt, afford winter coats, pay utility bills, and save for
future goals and needs.

Savings Promoter volunteers* will also be on site helping families use their refunds to move up the
economic ladder!

*The Campaign's greatest need is for additional Savings Promoter volunteers.

No Professional Experience Needed

If you know how to complete a tax return, or have done your own taxes, you can volunteer as a tax preparer. All
preparers receive 12 hours of free training (on Saturdays and/or weekdays evenings) and IRS certification in
January.

Or, if you would rather volunteer as a Savings Promoter, you will receive 4 hours of interactive training to enable
you to help clients save their refunds, enroll in Money Management classes and credit counseling, and even open
direct deposit accounts!

Opportunities for Everyone

In addition to tax preparers, we need volunteer interpreters and Savings Promoter
volunteers to educate clients about savings products and free financial resources.

Volunteers at some sites will even help eligible clients register for Food Stamps.

Flexible Hours & Locations

Volunteer for 3-4 hours a week from January 30 through mid April at one of 12 sites throughout the DC area. Most
sites are open on evenings and/or weekends.
