Technician Training Path FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and Answers
Q: What is the Technician A: The Training Path is the recommended training that each technician must take for
Training Path? his or her technical training development. In the future, development skills
training (e.g. HDSI) or safety training may be added.
Q: Technician Training Path or A: ProTech rolled out the original Machine Training Path in April 2011. We
Technician Career Development currently call the path for technician training a Training Path. In the future,
Path? Caterpillar is working to transition from calling a Technician Training Path and
may begin calling a technician’s development path a Technician Career
Development Path (TCDP). For now, HOLT CAT calls it a Training Path.
Q: How long will this Training A: Depending on the technician’s progress and supervisor’s business needs, the
Path take to complete? expected timeframe will be from 12 months to 6 years based on the experience-
level of a technician. As Caterpillar develops new products, new training may be
added to the Training Path in the future.
Q: Can I get credit for past A: ProTech will work with a technician and supervisor to provide credit for past
training or job experience? training or appropriate job experience. A technician can take a knowledge
assessment or be observed performing the “hands-on” tasks on-the-job.
Q: What is a technician’s A: A technician’s role is to own his (or her) training. Of course a technician will
responsibility? work with his supervisor to prioritize training, but ultimately a technician owns his
training – just like a technician owns his on-the-job performance. A technician
must help his supervisor track his training using UltiPro Self-Service.
Q: What is a supervisor’s A: A supervisor’s role is to work with each of his (or her) technicians to prioritize
responsibility? training based on job requirements. Just as a supervisor works with Human
Resources to track performance, a supervisor must work with ProTech to track
training. Although a supervisor works with a technician (and ProTech) to plan
training – ultimately it is the technician’s responsibility to track and complete
training. A supervisor should discuss a technician’s training progress during the
Performance Review.
Q: How do I enroll in training A: ProTech will enroll a technician into a training course or into an online Dealer
courses? Performance Center (DPC) or PureSafety course. Call Kaley Dierlam (972-721-
2846) or Vanessa Johnson (210-648-8420) to enroll. NOTE: Before calling to
enroll, it makes sense to discuss with your supervisor what training would be best
to take at ProTech.
Q: Why are courses that I need not A: ProTech has left room on our training schedule to “schedule” more classes. Call
offered on the Training us to let us know what you would like to see. NOTE: Please be patient. Since
Schedule? there are a lot of technicians who need training, it takes time for the ProTech staff
to deliver enough training courses to meet demand.
Q: Where are courses offered? A: ProTech offers instructor-taught courses at the HOLT ProTech Training Center in
Irving and at the new HOLT ProTech Training Center in San Antonio. If possible,
ProTech will try to bring training to other locations depending on training-aid
availability, as well as the number of trainees enrolled per course.
Q: Will I be automatically A: No. Promotions are based on completed training, as well as job performance, on-
promoted once I complete all the-job attitude, teamwork, experience-level, current and past performance, as well
the training in my Career Path? as business needs.
Q: How do I track my training? A: ProTech tracks training using the Caterpillar Dealer Performance Center (DPC)
and @my Classroom Learning Management System (LMS). A technician can
track his (or her) training using @my Classroom.
Q: What are the training costs? A: Your supervisor has a training budget and travel budget to cover key training
expenses to meet business needs. NOTE: This is not an unlimited budget.
Q: How many courses can I take A: HOLT CAT recommends a minimum of one instructor-taught technical training
each year? course be taken each year (every twelve months) and a minimum of 16 hours of
online training be taken each year. If you need more training, your supervisor
may recommend more courses be taken based on business requirements. Please
talk with your supervisor for your Department’s specific requirements.

Technician Development Process
Introduction The HOLT ProTech Technician Development Process offers an
effective process to help guide the learning development of HOLT CAT
technicians. The process is listed below.
1
Training Path A technician and supervisor should sit down to
Discussion discuss the technician’s Training Path and create an
individual development plan for the technician using
the Recommended Training Path documents on the
following pages.
2 Training History
Review
A technician and supervisor review the training
history (Ultipro Self Service, CAT DPC, @my
Classroom, etc.) for the technician. NOTE: Call
HOLT ProTech for assistance.
3
Training If needed, a technician takes an appropriate
Assessment knowledge or practical assessment to determine the
knowledge and skill gaps. The HOLT CAT @my
Classroom LMS or CAT DPC online system makes
recommendations of courses. NOTE: Call HOLT
ProTech for assistance with crediting technicians for
training.
4
Instructor Taught / A technician takes appropriate on-the-job, online and
Online instructor-taught technical training. The technician’s
Training / supervisor receives feedback (e.g. Report Card,
On-The Job Online Certificate, etc.) on how well the technician
Training performed on-the-job and in the course.
5 On-The-Job
Practice
The technician’s supervisor assigns the technician
on-the-job work relevant to the training just taken
Reinforcement (e.g. Electricity Course = Electrical work) to
reinforce training and work towards skill mastery.
6 Training
Certification
A technician takes an appropriate assessment (e.g.
CAT DPC) to determine the level of skill mastery.
The technician is observed performing the skills to
standard (e.g. Structured On-the-Job Training – CAT
SOJT) by a qualified observer.
