Simple 10-Petal Afghan Square

This 9 inch square was made using Red Heart Super Saver (Lilac, Dark Plum and Light Raspberry) worsted
weight yarn and a size H hook. Super tester, Muffetsmom, used Red Heart Holiday and a size G hook for her 9
inch square. Your size will vary depending upon your yarn, hook and tension. This pattern uses US terms
throughout.
Special Stitches:
V-stitch: (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-2 space.
Picot: chain 2, insert hook under front horizontal loop AND front vertical loop of last dc made, yarn over and
pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through two loops on hook.
Long double crochet (ldc): double crochet worked into stitch one round below current round.
Half Double Crochet Tack (hdc tack): slip hook through two vertical loops at back of picot then under chain,
yo and pull loop to front, yo and pull through all loops on hook.
Double Triple crochet stitch (dtr): yarn over three times, insert hook in top of indicated stitch, yarn over and
pull through stitch, [yo and pull through two loops] 4 times.
Front Post Single Crochet (fpsc) – insert hook from front, right to left, under the post of the indicated stitch,
yarn over and pull loop to front, yo and pull through both loops on hook.

Instructions:
Round 1: With Color A, form a sliding circle, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 19 dc into circle, close the circle, sl st in
beginning ch to join (20 dc).
Round 2: Ch 6 (counts as tr, ch 2), [tr in each of next 2 dc, ch 2] 9 times, trc in next dc, sl st in fourth st of
beginning ch to join (10 pairs of tr, 10 ch-2 spaces). Place a stitch marker at the top of the beginning ch for
use in the final round, which is worked on the surface of the finished block.
Round 3: Sl st into next ch-2 space, ch 3, (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same space, [(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-2 space]
9 times, sl st in beginning ch-3 to join (10 V-stitches).
Round 4: [(4 dc, picot, 4 dc) in next ch-3 space, sl st in between V stitches] 10 times, sl st in beginning dc to
join (10 “petals”). Fasten off.
Round 5: Attach Color B with ldc in space between any two of the petals, [ch 6 (behind petal), ldc into space
below between V stitches in Round 3] 9 times, ch 6, sl st in beginning ldc to join (10 ldc, 10 ch-6).
Round 6: See Special Stitches for hdc tack. Ch 2 (counts as hdc), [(3 hdc, hdc tack, 3 hdc) in next ch-6
space, hdc in next ldc] 9 times, (3 hdc, hdc tack, 3 hdc) in next ch-6 space, sl st in beginning ch-2 to join (80
hdc)
Round 7: Ch 5 (counts as dtr), tr in same st, tr in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in each of next
3 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 3 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, tr in each of next 2 sts, (tr, dtr)
in next st, ch 2, [(dtr, tr) in next st, tr in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in each of next 3 sts, sc
in each of next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 3 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, tr in each of next 2 sts, (tr, dtr) in next st,
ch 2] 3 times, sl st to beginning ch to join (22 sts per side and 4 ch-2 corners). Fasten off.
Round 8: Attach Color C with sc in dtr following any corner ch-2 space, sc in each of next 21 sts, [(2 sc, ch 2,
2 sc) in ch-2 corner space, sc in each of next 22 sts] 3 times, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-2 corner space, sl st in
beginning sc to join (26 sc per side and 4 ch-2 corner spaces). Fasten off.
Round 9: Attach Color B with dc in any ch-2 corner space, (ch 2, dc) in same sp, [dc in each of next 26 sts,
(dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 corner space] 3 times, dc in each of next 26 sts, sl st in beginning dc to join (28 sts per side
and 4 ch-2 corner spaces). Fasten off.

Surface crochet: With right side facing, attach Color C with sc on the post of the marked beginning chain in
Round 2, 4 sc in same ch sp, fpsc around dc at base of chain, rotate the block and work 5 sc up the post of next
tr, sc in space between this tr and the next one, [rotate block, 5 sc around post of next tr, fpsc around dc at base
of tr, rotate block, 5 sc around post of next tr, sc between tr’s] 9 times, sl st in beginning sc to join. Fasten off
and weave in ends.

pattern to make a block for an afghan, but
it wasn’t large enough, so she added
rounds. She did such a great job that her
version of the block was chosen as the
filler block for August 2017 in the Block-
A-Month CAL. She has kindly offered
her notes on those additional rounds.

Follow original instructions through Round 9.


Shell stitch: Skip 2 dc, (3 dc, picot, 3 dc) in next dc, skip 2 dc, sl st in next st.
Round 10: Attach Color B with sl st in any Round 9 ch-2 corner sp, (sc, sl st) in same sp, [Shell stitch 4 times,
skip 2 dc, (3 dc, picot, 3 dc) in next dc, skip 1 st, (sl st, sc, sl st in ch-2 corner sp] 3 times, Shell stitch 4 times,
skip 2 dc, (3 dc, picot, 3 dc) in next dc, skip 1 st, sl st in beginning sl st to join. (5 shells per side, 4 sl st-sc-sl st
corners.) Fasten off.
Round 11: Attach Color A with tr in any corner sc, (2 tr, 3 dc, 3 tr) in same sc, [[sc in back horizontal loop of
picot, (tr, 3 dc, tr) in Round 9 dc below next sl st] 4 times, sc in back horizontal loop of picot, (3 tr, 3 dc, 3 tr) in
corner sc] 3 times, [sc in back loop of picot, (tr, 3 dc, tr) in Round 9 dc below next sl st] 4 times, sc in back
horizontal loop of picot, sl st in first tr to join (34 sts per side). Fasten off.
Round 12: Attach Color C with hdc in dc at center of any 9-st corner fan, (hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in same st, [hdc in
each of next 33 sts, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in next st] 3 times, hdc in each of next 33 sts, sl st in first hdc to join (37
hdc per side and 4 ch-2 corner spaces). Fasten off and weave in ends.
