DISCUSSION

When determining the strength of aggregates, the crushing value test for aggregates
needs to be conducted when determining the satisfactory resistance to crushing under
constructions. Crushing value test experiment requires the crushing value test apparatus which
will be used to determine the crushing value of the aggregates used. The aggregates that were
used are aggregates that were passing in 12.5 mm sieve and retained in 2.36 mm sieve where
its contents weigh around 6.5 kg. The aggregates were dry as it was placed inside the standard
cylindrical measure and the sample is tamped 25 times before the weight of the sample was
taken and found to be 4649.2 g. The same weight is taken for the subsequent repeat test.
After the preparations were complete, the cylindrical sample is placed in aggregate
crushing test apparatus. The cylindrical sample is placed carefully as to level with the base
plate. The sample is then fastened with plungers. The load is then placed on the sample
uniformly at 40 tons in 10 minutes time. The load is then released and sieved on a 2.36 mm
sieve. The fraction passing the sieve is weighed and this allows us to find the crushing value of
the aggregate.
