Learning Objectives
★ 1. SWBAT identify multiple characteristics of poems (stanzas, patterns, etc.)
★ 2. SWBAT identify different types of poetry (narrative, lyrical, acrostic, etc.)
★ 3. SWBAT compare and contrast different types of poems and their differing
characteristics
★ 4. SWBAT create their own acrostic poem about Autumn
Poetry Characteristics
Rhyme: repetition of similar ending sounds (cat, hat, bat).

Rhythm: the long and short patterns through stressed and unstressed syllables,
particularly in verse form (the poem has a specific beat to it).

Figurative Language: similes, metaphors, personification, and imagery

Ex. She was as fast as a cheetah (simile)


Poetry Characteristics
Mood: evokes feelings and emotions from reader

Ex. A light and cheery poem might bring up a child’s mood and make them happy

Stanza: a group of lines in a poem. They sometimes having a fixed length or


rhyme scheme

Verse: can refer to a single line, stanza or the poem itself.


Narrative Poetry
● Narrative poems tell a story and are easy to understand
○ Example: Give Me Normal from Put Your Eyes Up Here

Ms. Roys met us

On the first day of school,

With a yellow stovepipe hat

On her head

A skirt that stuck out

As if there were wires

Underneath it...
Lyrical Poetry
● This type of poem sounds like a song.
● It is more focused on descriptions of personal things.

Acrostic Poetry
Read Aloud Time
● We are going to read three poems from the book Almost Late to School. See if
you can distinguish what type of poem we are reading and any characteristics
of poetry you hear.
Task
★ Make an acrostic poem as class.
★ Make an acrostic poem on your own, ask a neighbor if you need help.
★ Share with a neighbor when finished.
★ Share as class when finished.
