Purpose of ELA
As the first course in the high school
academic stream, English 10-1 attempts to
prepare you for the next two years of ELA.
The focus of this program is on critical thought
and critical writing. For many of you this will
be your first exposure to the critical
assessment of literature. You will have the
opportunity to explore and articulate your
thoughts and feelings through a variety of
mediums. Success in this course will demand
a genuine interest in literature and the
communication process. You will need an
open and determined mind as the course
material and pacing is rigorous.
General Objectives
• To develop an ability to communicate,
using a variety of methods, with
increasing maturity, logic and clarity in
the written, verbal, and representative
forms.
• To develop an ability to listen, speak,
view, read, and write with insight and
imagination that will result in increased
satisfaction and enjoyment for you.
• To examine a variety of thoughts that
will expand your understanding of
yourself, others, and the societal values
that impress upon your life.
• To recognize and understand the
meaning, power, and use of language.
• To develop and support critical,
analytical, and aesthetic judgments
formed from personal interaction with
literature, film, and various forms of
media.
• To increase awareness and
appreciation of Canadian Literature
and how it reflects a separate and
distinct identity.
Assessment
You cannot raise your mark in ELA by
doing extra work. The work you submit
reflects your achievement. The only
way to improve is to keep working at
improving your submissions. How?
Attend FLT, practice Reading
Comprehensions, participate in class
discussions, read and write for fun, and
do the formative assignments.
Formative Assessment
These are all assignments that do not
receive a mark such as story question
sets, brainstorming pieces, and class
discussions. All of these contribute to
your ability to understand and analyze
text. It is in your best interests to
complete these even without the
incentive of a mark.
Summative Assessment
Anything that is summatively assessed
will be entered into Power School and
used to create your mark. All of this
work will be done in class. Please see
submission guidelines for more
information.
Policies
TECHNOLOGY
Students will have very limited access to
technology this semester. As all reading will
be done for homework, all writing will be
completed in class by hand. Students will
have ample class time (especially with FLT) to
complete all assignments.
Research has shown that students cannot
self-regulate technology use and that it is
detrimental to success for both themselves
and those seated next to them. As such, the
majority of the work we do will be done by
hand. Students will have warning for classes
when a computer is necessary. Cell phones
should be left in your locker. They may also be
left in the phone pocket organizer at the front
of class. Should you wish to listen to music
during independent work time, you may do
so. However, should your phone prove
distracting you will lose the privilege. There will
be no warnings.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All assignments must be submitted to the
appropriate place. Assignments submitted
elsewhere will not be considered.
Assignments must follow MLA guidelines for
formatting and citations. Assignments that do
not, will not be considered.
All assignments have a due date and a
deadline. If handed in by the due date, the
assignment will receive feedback written or
verbal. There will also be a hard deadline
exactly one week later. Assignments handed
in after the due date but by the deadline will
be assessed with no feedback. No
assignment will be accepted after the
deadline. It will be up to the discretion of the
teacher if an alternate assignment is offered.

Classroom Routines and
Expectations
Please respect the environment: do not
leave garbage or graffiti, tuck in your
chairs when you leave, and be aware of
the energy you bring to the space.
Be on time and prepared for learning. If
you are late, come in quietly. You are
responsible for what you missed. Lessons
and instruction will not be repeated.
Completion of all assignments is essential
for your academic success.
All assignments are to be completed in
class. As such, you will need to make use
of your FLT time in order to complete
your work.
Just a reminder that you are able to
seek help from any ELA teacher during
FLT. Please make sure that you take
copies of the assignment with you
before asking for help.

Policies Continued…
ABSENCES
If you are going to be away for an extended
period of time, please fill in an extended
absence form. These are available at the
office.
If you miss a day, you are responsible for
checking Google Classroom.
Anything due on the day you miss, you will
need to send by email that same day or it
will be considered late. A picture of
handwritten work will be sufficient.
It is not possible to make up a Socratic
Seminar or a presentation. If you miss those,
you will receive a mark of zero with no ability
for a reassessment.
Just a reminder, your group depends on you.
Absences during the group work process,
excused or otherwise, will negatively impact
your mark.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Please see both the ELA Handbook and the
Student Handbook for the full policy. In
general, any student caught plagiarizing:
copying in full or in part another’s work,
failure to cite properly, or using another’s
idea/argument, will receive an automatic
zero with no ability to write an alternate
assignment. Furthermore, if you share your
work with someone else who then copies
you, both parties will receive a mark of zero
with no option for an alternate assignment. If
the problem persists, it will be dealt with at
the Administration level.
