Job Description: Volunteer Coordinator

November 2018

Background: The Northwest Abortion Access Fund is an abortion fund serving Washington,
Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. Trained, compassionate volunteer advocates run our toll-free
hotline. We help people pay for their abortion care by sending funding directly to the clinic. We
also help people get to and from the clinic. And we make sure people traveling for care have a
safe place to stay.

We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit and a member of the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF), a
membership organization of over 70 funds across the United States.

We are very excited to be expanding our team and hiring our first program staff - a volunteer
coordinator to recruit, supervise, schedule and retain volunteers for the purpose of staffing
programs, fundraisers, and other events to advance the mission of NWAAF.

Responsibilities:
● Set and work toward volunteer recruitment goals for funding advocates, travel
coordinators, fundraising event volunteers, committee volunteers, and other roles as
needed to support NWAAF programs and events
● Onboard volunteers via NWAAF orientation in person, or by videoconference
● Supervise two Screening & Trainings Leads
● Oversee Screening & Training Leads in the development & maintenance of training
curriculum and screening protocols, including NWAAF orientation, role-specific trainings,
booster trainings and short training videos.
● Evaluate trainings and make needed improvements
● Ensure that reproductive justice content is integrated into all NWAAF training curricula
and all volunteer management activities
● Conduct annual volunteer management evaluation, including a volunteer satisfaction
survey, in conjunction with Hotline and Travel Leads
● Engage in regular volunteer retention activities, including volunteer recognition
● Oversee wiki (online resource); ensure it is up-to-date and meets volunteers’ needs
● Coordinate volunteers for annual fundraisers & attend if within geographic area
● Schedule volunteers for tabling events
● Schedule volunteers for speaking requests
● Produce volunteer newsletter in coordination with Funding and Travel Leads

● Attend trainings as required by the Board
● Find ways to deepen volunteer engagement in NWAAF work, building a leadership
pipeline and getting volunteers involved in fundraising and other activities
● Fulfill other duties that may be assigned by the Board

Desired attributes:
● Ideally has 1+ years experience in volunteer management AND 1+ years experience in
abortion care or abortion access work
● Comfortable working remotely via online office tools and databases
● Has experience leading trainings via video/phone conference
● Comfortable in working with media
● Working knowledge of intersectionality and the impact that privilege & oppression can
have on people’s ability to access abortion
● Understanding of barriers to abortion access, both logistical and cultural/societal
● Identifies as a member of and/or has experience working with marginalized communities
(communities of color, native communities, LGBTQ, rural communities, working
class/poor people, women, trans and femme folks, people with disabilities, ect.)
● Experience working in a non-profit or receiving services from a non-profit
● Proven ability to support and supervise other people
● Strong written and verbal communication skills
● Compassionate, self-reflective
● Committed to reproductive justice

Reports to: Board of Directors

Hours & Time Commitment:


● 20-28 hours per week, fairly flexible hours
● Convene monthly supervision meetings with Screening & Training Leads
● Attend meetings with Program Lead Team every other month
● Attend monthly board meetings, as needed
● Attend yearly conferences with expenses reimbursed
● Desired commitment of at least 1 year

Support & Training:


● Will have the opportunity to shadow and train for approximately 2 month (DOE) before
leadership expected
● Will receive monthly and as needed support from 2 Board supervisors
● Will have monthly opportunities to give feedback to the board about successes and
challenges with the role or additional supports needed
● Opportunity to attend NNAF Summit and potentially other trainings and/or conferences
with expenses paid.
● This role will require access to a reliable smartphone, computer, and internet access.
NWAAF can provide this tech infrastructure as needed.

Salary & Benefits:
● $20-22/hour
● Paid sick time
● Health insurance stipend, market rate up to $300-400 per month
