Hill of Fire Lesson Plan

Book: Hill of Fire, Thomas P. Lewis, 1971


Grade Level: Elementary grades 3 - 5
Multicultural Themes: ​Focusing on the Mexican culture​/Adapting to environmental changes.

Materials: The book Hill of Fire By Thomas P. Lewis, crayons, colored markers, scissors, glue,
and construction paper.

Standard: NDE.ELA- Literacy. 3.2 Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from
diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed
through key details in the text.

Objectives:
● Students will be able to describe characters, settings, and major events in the story by
recreating them onto construction paper.
● Students will create awareness of different cultures.

Procedure
Introduce​​: Show the book, Hill of Fire by Thomas P. Lewis and say, “Today we are
going to learn that every action has a reaction”. Then ask the class two more questions, “Have
any of you ever moved? If so, did you like it?”. Those questions will start a brief discussion of
moving.
Read​​: Teacher reads the book aloud.
Discuss​​: In small groups the class will discuss key events in book, and choices made by
characters.
● Question 1: Are there any tasks in your life that are repetitive?
● Question 2: Who is “ El Monstruo”?
● Question 3: What would you do if you and your family moved away from where you live
now?
● Question 4: Who created the Volcano?
● Question 5: Do you think the farmer still complains that nothing ever happens?

Activities:
● Working in small groups (4 to 5 students per group), students will discuss, what they
learned about the Mexican culture that they did not know before.
● Students will create hand drawn scenes from the book to illustrate on construction paper.

Evaluation: Teacher checks students' work on the construction sheets for accuracy.
