Possible Lesson Plan Format

Secondary Education

Grade Level/Subject: 9th Grade English Language Arts

Context: Romeo and Juliet

Standards: RI.9-10.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis
of what the text says explicitly as wee as inferences drawn from the text.
RL9-10.6 Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience
reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing
on a wide reading of world literature. Sl.9-10.4 Present information,
findings and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically such
that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization
development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience,
and task. SL.9-10.6 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks,
demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or
appropriate.

Concept Addressed: To understand and read the Shakespeare side of Romeo and Juliet.
Objectives: Students will 1. Follow along with the reading. 2. Act out the play 3.
Analyze texts. 4. Take notes on the play.
Academic Language: Soliloquys, foreshadowing, themes, imagery.

Learning Strategies: Note-taking from lecture, annotating, speaking and listening.

Materials Needed: Play swords, books (student provided), pens and pencils (student
provided)

Instructional Outline: 1. Check homework. 2. Get out books. 3. Open to page 224. 4. Read as
much as we can together as a class, taking notes and answering
questions.

Modifications: 5th period ELL class, co-teacher will assist in helping students create
presentation and provide dictionaries as needed. *due to the
differentiated nature of the assignment, all other modifications are
addressed.

Assessment: Observation of student engagement. Informal analysis of student


understanding based off level of understanding from within the groups.
Formal data will be collected the next day during presentations.
