.44 Magnum, .45 Colt, .454 Casull, .480 Ruger, .460 S&W Magnum and the .500
S&W Magnum.
All of these rounds provide sufficient power to stop black bears and mountain
lions. Grizzlies are another animal, but all of these—with the right bullet—give
you a far better chance of survival than smaller calibers with similar shot
placement.
The choices for semi-autos are fewer. The .45 ACP is often considered as a
potential bear-stopper, and for backwoods excursions where grizzlies are
absent, there’s no predator in the woods that the .45 can’t handle. The 10mm
Auto, which offers more capacity and greater energy than the .45 ACP (with the
right loads it isn’t far behind the powerful .41 Rem Mag, as a matter of fact), is
probably a better choice if you can handle the recoil.
The 10mm Auto is in the midst of a renaissance right now, and many shooters
are looking to buy a semi-auto chambered in this round not only for defensive
purposes but also for hunting. There are a handful of semi-autos like those
produced by Desert Eagle that fire magnum rounds like .357 and .44, and if you
can handle the gun weight and recoil they work well, too.
Recoil management is critical. If you can’t handle recoil, you likely won’t practice
with a gun (or practice enough). In any defensive situation, you need a gun with
which you are familiar. Bullet selection is critical, too. For the really big bears,
most experienced bear guides I know recommend hard, flat-nosed bullets that
don’t expand.

First off, we need to define what a C D
true multiple target situation actually
is. Yes, I know…the usual response
to this is that there’s more than one
target. However, such is untrue: the
actual definition of a multiple target
scenario is when all of your adversar-

ENGAGING
THE TARGETS
It’s important to know this because
it dictates how many shots you’ll fire
at each target. We all pretty much
subscribe to the idea of hitting a single
target twice, but that’s where the
uniformity ends. Due mostly to the
long-standing but nonetheless erro-

Sig Sauer didn’t sit back and rest after winning the U.S. Army contract for the M17/M18 Modular Pistol System.
The company remembered civilians who carry concealed with its new P365, so named because it’s a small gun
that you can carry 365 days a year. The company is promoting the P365 as a “micro compact.” That’s because
the gun’s newly designed, narrow-necked, flush-fitting double-stack magazine allows the gun to have a 10+1
capacity in a frame that, at just 1 inch wide, is closer in size to a single-stack pistol with typical 6+1 capacity.
Two magazines are included: one flush-fitting mag and another with a finger extension floorplate. An extended
12-round magazine is also available. The P365 is a striker-fired, polymer-frame 9mm that weighs 17.8 ounces.

110 Auto
The Buck 110 Folding Hunter is a classic. Introduced by Al Buck in 1963, the knife was a rock-solid lockback folder immediately embraced by
outdoorsmen everywhere. It quickly became an industry standard. That knife is still available and still very popular. Now the company has taken
that iconic design a step further by introducing the Buck 110 Auto, an automatic knife that maintains the classic looks and features of the original,
with the ability to deploy it with the push of a button. The knife features the familiar clip-point blade of 420HC steel that provides a good balance
of sharpness, corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening. The blade is 3.75 inches long and 0.12 inch thick. The knife weighs 7.1 ounces. The 110
Auto features the same Macassar Ebony Dymondwood grip scales and brass bolsters that helped make the original 110 so popular. And like the
original, this one is made in the U.S., too. A leather sheath is included.

Second, and most important, the muzzle flash and blast from this snub-gun

later-afternoon cloudy skies that habitually darken the Pacific Northwest in

somebody halfway to the hereafter! The modern .45 Colt cartridge not only

that can be swapped out if my primary holster is out of

WELL DESIGNED
The Security-9 is a handgun that is de-
signed around the trigger action devel-
oped for the recent Ruger LCP II with
a recessed hammer that is close to
fully cocked upon chambering a round.
The Security 9 might remind you of a
beefed-up LCP II in many regards. For
my personal taste, I felt the ergonom-
ics on some earlier Ruger designs left
some room for improvement. But the
new Security-9 is a handgun with
excellent human engineering.
1. SUFFICIENT POWER
The 9mm Luger cartridge is a powerful number. Many loads exhibit over
1,100 fps even in short barrel handguns. The 9mm will jolt bullets fast
enough to ensure reliable expansion.
2. EXTRA FIREPOWER
Even the most compact handguns have a capacity of eight to nine cartridges,
and some stuff 15 rounds into the magazine and remain manageable with a
comfortable sized grip.
3. EASY TO CONTROL
Another advantage of the 9mm cartridge that cannot be overstated is that
folks of normal physical ability are able to master the cartridge to a high
standard. Recoil is modest for the power exhibited. I will not insult your
intelligence by claiming the 9mm is just as effective as the .40 or .45 caliber
handgun—of course it isn’t, it cannot be—but the 9mm is powerful enough
for personal defense given careful load selection.
4. AFFORDABLE AMMO
Another advantage of the 9mm is ammunition cost. You will spend more
on ammunition over a period of months in mastering the handgun than the
initial cost of the handgun itself. The 9mm offers economy. As an example,
a quick look at the prices for 9mm ammunition at Cheaperthandirt.com
indicates that 9mm Luger ammunition may be had in 500 rounds versus 350
rounds for the .45 ACP at the same price. The ratio may favor the 9mm more if
you shop carefully. That is a lot of extra ammunition in the training budget.
