Laboratory Activity # 2
Atmospheric Lapse Rate and Stability

Introduction:
A lapse rate is defined as the rate of change in temperature observed while moving upwards through the
Earth's atmosphere.
One of the processes that are connected to vertical motions in the atmosphere is stability. This describes
the tendency for the atmosphere to either resist or enhance vertical motions. The stability of the atmosphere is
directly related to the changes of temperature with height. First we need to consider the temperature changes
experienced by rising air. As a parcel of air rises it moves into regions of lower pressure. This means that the
surrounding air is pushing on the parcel with less force. So the air in the parcel will expand and the volume will
become larger.

Objectives:
1. To be able to understand the lapse rate and stability.
2. To be able to create a diagram of four major causes of air mass lifting, this is the convection, convergence,
orographic and frontal.

B. Answer the following questions:

1. What is the environmental lapse rate for August 20, 2017?

2. Is the adiabatic lapse rate greater or less than the ELR on this date?
3. Is this a condition of stability or instability?

Note: Under the drawings, make a brief explanation of each type of air mass lifting.
