INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL WOODWORK
1. GENERAL
1.1 Contract Documents
1.1.1 All Work of this Section shall comply with the requirements of the Contract
Documents for the Main Building Works, the Drawings, Schedules and with all other
Contract Documents.
1.2 Work Included
1.2.1 Architectural woodwork including cabinet work and mill work indicated on the
Drawings with plastic laminate finish and/or urethane finish as follows:
a) Storage cabinets
b) Cabinets, drawer units, shelving, etc.
c) Wood-work incorporated into Building information desks and reception
desks
d) Timber veneer wall panels with timber ribs
e) Timber slat ceilings
f) Any other woodwork not mentioned above but shown on Drawings.
1.2.2 Furnishing and installing all ironmongery for Work of this Section.
1.2.3 Provide accessory and miscellaneous components required to complete the Work
of this Section.
1.2.4 Timber framing and rough lumber as required for Work of this Section.
1.2.5 Timber slats, grounds, blocking, nailers, furring as required for Work of this Section.
Coordinate with Work of other trades and/or Sections for items to be built into or
concealed in cabinet work.
1.2.6 Light steel framing or supports for Work of this Section.
1.2.7 Furnish and install continuous "wire mould" or similar electrical conduit system for
lights, outlets and/or switches where internal to cabinets, etc.

1.4 Quality Assurance
1.4.1 Refer to Clause 1.4 of Section 06 20 00 - Finish Carpentry (Sub-clauses 1.4.1 to 1.4.7
inclusive) and Section 01 02 10 Reference Standards to comply with the requirements
of the referenced Standards.

1.5 Submittals
1.5.1 Shop Drawings:
Submit for all items of work of this Section showing in large scale, methods of
construction, installation and joining, dimensions, thicknesses, materials and finishes
of materials and all other details as required to fully illustrate the work.
1.5.2 Manufacturer's Data:
a) Submit manufacturer's technical data and specification for each finish system
of this Work for verification that the materials proposed conform to the
Specification. Identify each component of finish systems and recommended
application instructions. Include technical specifications, standard drawings
and details.
b) Submit technical data and specifications with identification of each
ironmongery item.
c) Timber Identification
Certification : Obtain from the supplier and produce on demand, written
certificates (which may be included on an invoice or delivery docket) showing
that the timber used in the Works complies with the Contract requirements
including species, grade and the like.
1.5.3 Samples:
a) Clear Finished Timber Samples
Scope : Where clear finished timber is scheduled for use, comply with the
following procedure.
Requirement : Submit a sample of the veneer species specified, not less
than 600 x 300mm and a sample of solid timber of species specified not less
than 900 x 50 x 50mm.
Veneer and solid timber is to conform to these samples once approved.
b) Typical and representative cabinet unit construction assembly with plastic
laminate finish of counter top, base cabinet, drawer and swing door. Include
hardware as specified.
c) Plastic laminate panel, 300mm x 300mm x 19mm, complete with edge
treatments. Colours shall be as selected from available solid standard
colours of approved manufacturer and subject to approval from sample.
d) For each colour selected of lacquered finish on plastic laminate and
representative core construction, 300mm x 300mm x 19mm.
e) Each type of ironmongery to be used.
f) Submit additional samples of materials specified herein prior to fabrication.
g) Typical wire mould units including connectors, corners, bends etc.
h) Prototype
Prior to the commencement of fabrication, the following production
prototypes shall be created in a location to be directed by the Architect on
site.
Maximum size: 1000mm high x 1000mm wide
Approved prototypes may be used in the finished work

Full allowance shall be made for all costs associated with the fabrication,
finishing and submission of the prototypes inclusive of delivery to site
including the cost of any additional prototypes as may be required due to the
failure of the prototype submitted to satisfy the requirements of the Contract
Documents together with an allowance for the collection of approved (if
applicable) prototype from site and thoroughly cleaning prior to delivery as
finished work.
1.6 Product Handling and Storage
1.6.1 All materials and work of this Section shall be protected from damage until final
acceptance of Work. Cover, ventilate and protect from damage caused by weather,
moisture, heat, staining, dirt, abrasions and other causes which may adversely affect
appearance or use, or which may cause deterioration of finish, warpage, distortion,
twisting, opening of joints and seams, delamination, loosening, etc, of woodwork.
1.6.2 Do not deliver woodwork, until painting, wet work, grinding and similar operations
which could damage, soil or deteriorate woodwork have been completed in
installation areas. If, due to unforeseen circumstances, woodwork must be stored in
other than installation areas, store only in areas meeting requirements which
approximate specified conditions.
1.6.3 Damaged or defective items of Work of this Section are subject to rejection and
replacement with new items by Contractor at no cost to the Employer.
1.6.4 All materials shall be carefully stored at all times and fully protected from external
conditions or contamination.
1.7 Job Conditions
1.7.1 Examination:
The Contractor shall ensure that the substrates and conditions under which the Work
is to be installed are satisfactory. Do not proceed with the Work until unsatisfactory
conditions have been corrected.
1.7.2 Humidity and Temperature Controls:
The Contractor shall maintain the cooling and ventilation in installation areas as
required to obtain relative humidity necessary to maintain optimum moisture content
specified below for woodwork.
1.7.3 Fabrication Moisture Content:
Determine equilibrium moisture content and maintain required temperature and
relative humidity as required for a tolerance of plus or minus 1% of the specified
optimum moisture content until woodwork receives specified finishes. Refer to BS
1186 Part 1: 1991 for method of determining equilibrium moisture content values.
1.8 Coordination
1.8.1 Portions of the work of this Section are interrelated to work and equipment of other
trades, Sections or Divisions.
1.8.2 Coordinate the fabrication, delivery and installation of materials for applicable portions
of work and finishes.
2. PRODUCTS
2.1 Materials
2.1.1 General:
a) Conform to the requirements detailed in Clauses 2.1 to 2.4, 2.5 to 2.8 of
Section 06 20 00 – Finish Carpentry. In the event of any overlap or
discrepancy in the Specifications, the more stringent shall apply.

b) All wood shall be well seasoned and kiln dried to a % moisture content, by
weight, as indicated in the approved standards, but not less than the
following.
i) For rough and framing lumber and for ground, blocking, nailers,
furring etc.:
Average of 12% (maximum of 14% to minimum of 9%)
ii) For interior woodwork:
Average of 8% (maximum of 10% to minimum of 5%)
c) Grade:
All wood materials shall be premium grade or better.
d) Visible Work:
Requirement : Where timber is required for visible work having clear or
stained finishes, the visible faces, edges and corners shall be clean and free
of visible blemishes such as branding marks, chalk marks, marks caused by
machining, conveying and handling and the like.
2.1.2 Solid Hardwoods:
a) For lacquered finish, species shall be approved local or regional hardwood
species selected to provide superior grade of lacquer finish.
b) Hardwoods shall be solid, clear, sound and free of any defect which might
impair structural integrity or finished appearance.
2.1.3 Plywood:
Veneer core, minimum 18 mm thick unless otherwise indicated, interior grade using
exterior type waterproof glue. Waterproof plywood shall be used in exposed weather
condition and in locations indicated on the Drawings.
a) Provide best quality face plies of smooth plain sliced, clear, paint grade
hardwood for exposed and semi-exposed surfaces to receive painted finish.
b) Veneers shall be glued to core by "hot plate press" method.
c) Provide plywood with "V" type hardwood edge banding on exposed edges
and on all edges of adjustable shelves. Edge band shall be "let into" and
pressure glued to plywood. All corners to be mitred.
d) Plywood for clear finishes shall be Grade E. Veneer shall be as specified in
2.1.4.
e) For paint finishes, plywood shall be Grade 1.
2.1.4 Veneers:
a) Quality to SS1. Sliced veneers for clear finished work to the species and
layout in sheets generally 100 and 300mm thick unless a single veneer width
is sufficient, slip matched in pattern.
b) Species : American Cherry/First Grade Maple or as selected by the Architect.
c) Compensating Veneers : Timber veneered board shall have compensating
veneers to non-visible face to ensure veneered board remains stable,
compensating veneer to be veneer quality II of the same species as face
veneer.
d) Thickness : All veneer shall be not less than 0.8mm thick prior to finishing
and not less than 0.6mm thick after finishing but prior to application of applied
finish.

2.1.5 Particle Board:
a) Provide sanded, high density type, minimum 19mm thick unless otherwise
indicated.
b) Particle board may be used in lieu of plywood, subject to approval.
2.1.6 Core Construction (For Plastic Laminate Finish):
Plywood or Particle Board, not less than 19mm thick.
2.1.7 Plastic Laminate:
All "Colour Core" (plastic laminate) as manufactured by Formica Corp., or approved
equal, meeting Specification and the following requirements :
a) Face Sheets and Edging:
High-pressure laminate conforming to NEMA Standards LD-3-1975, 1.58mm
thick; colour and finish as selected.
b) Use Backer Type plastic laminate for backing sheet, 0.050 inch or 1.3mm
thick, to provide balanced construction.
c) Face sheets shall be produced in the panel sizes required for the Project and
as shown on Drawings. Plastic laminate which requires the same colour and
finish shall be produced by a single manufacturer.
d) To be 'cigarette-proof' grade with an aminoplastic facing.
e) Selection to be made from the selected manufacturer's standard range of
colours, patterns and textures (unless otherwise specified or noted on the
drawings).
f) Thickness
i) Door surface - 1.3mm thick
g) Laminate shall meet with the following test data based on NEMA standard

e) Acceptable brands / manufacturers, subject to compliance with specified
requirements. Other manufacturers providing similar and equal product will
be given equal consideration :
i) Wilsonart
ii) Formica
iii) Pionite
iv) Nevamar
2.1.8 Framing and Rough Lumber:
Includes blocking, grounds, furring, etc., to be suitable framing members for intended
use.
2.1.9 Ironmongery:
All ironmongery for the work of this Section shall be provided and installed by the
Architectural Woodwork fabricator. Concealed ironmongery shall include the types
specified herein and shown on the Drawings and shall be installed on units as
required for operation. Equivalent products of other manufacturers may be offered
subject to approval.
a) Provide cabinet locks for all cabinets and drawers.
b) Provide premium quality hinges and catches to properly accommodate each
door size, type, style, dimension, operation and thickness.
c) Provide slides to properly accommodate each drawer size, weight
requirements and style. Equip each drawer with side-mounted, bright steel,
full-extension, ball-bearing, nylon roller drawer slides, with limiting stops.
d) Unless otherwise indicated, all cabinet ironmongery shall be concealed and
be of one type and Manufacturer (as shown typically on Drawings and below).
e) Ironmongery Finish:
i) On painted and plastic laminate finishes:
Typical, unless otherwise noted, bright stainless steel US 32, except for items
not available in stainless steel, for which finish shall be bright nickel (US14).
2.1.10 Miscellaneous Accessories:
a) Provide non-ferrous metal or hot-dip galvanised anchors and inserts.
b) Provide toothed steel or lead expansion bolt devices for drilled-in-place
anchors.
c) Furnish inserts, anchors, straps and/or ties and toggle bolts as required, to
be set into concrete, masonry work, or attachment to structural steel or
gypsum drywall work for subsequent woodwork anchorage.
2.1.11 Primer:
a) Alkyd based wood primer formulated for interior woodwork, where concealed.
b) Wire Mould:
Or similar electrical conduit to service outlets, switches, lights, etc. Provide
in accordance with Local Authorities' requirements.

2.1.12 Built-in Kitchen Cabinets
Built-in kitchen high level and low level cabinets shall be constructed as shown in the
Drawings and to Architect’s approval
a) Layout & Dimensions
General layouts and approximate dimensions of the kitchen cabinets are
shown in the drawings and shall be taken as indicative. Dimensions and
sizes for all joinery works shall be measured, taken and checked on site.
Confirm all size measurements and dimensions prior to fabrication of any
kitchen cabinets.
b) Carcass
25mm thick moisture-resistant plywood lined with 0.4mm thick matt white
polykem on waterproof backing with white PVC edging.
c) Exposed Cabinet & Shelves
19mm thick moisture-resistant plywood with timber veneer finished with clear
polyurethane.
d) Back Panel & Filler Panel
4mm thick moisture-resistant plywood lined with 0.4mm thick matt white
polykem on waterproof backing.
e) Shelves inside cabinets
19mm thick moisture-resistant plywood lined with 0.4mm thick matt white
polykem on waterproof backing on both sides with PVC front edge.
f) Doors
19mm thick moisture-resistant plywood with timber veneer finished with clear
polyurethane to external surfaces and edges with 0.4mm thick matt white
polykem on waterproof backing to internal surfaces.
Rubber buffers shall be provided for all doors and meeting stiles shall have a
continuous custom made “T” shape rubber or nylon strip as specified.
g) Handle/Knob
Handles or knobs to be provided as specified. The finishes to the knob for
the kitchen cabinets is to match the kitchen cabinets to the approval of the
Architect.
h) Hinges
All doors shall be hung on concealed metal solid spring loaded hinges with
115o opening angle and to be self-closing on the last third of travel. Magnetic
door catches shall be provided for all doors.
i) Counter Top
Supply and install granite counter tops. Allow a PC supply rate of
BHD 100/m2 for the supply of the granite.
j) Drawers
Drawers shall be 19mm thick plywood lined with 0.4mm thick matt white
polykem. Front timber drawer panels to match door. Drawer shall have
tracks with concealed metal guide rails with stopper to prevent slipping with
a loading capacity of 30 kg as specified.
k) Stud for Adjustable Shelves
Nickel plated steel stud bearers with matching sleeves as specified.

2.2 Fabrication
2.2.1 Measurements:
Before proceeding with fabrication, obtain on site measurements and verify
dimensions of Shop Drawings' details as required for accurate fit to other
construction.
2.2.2 Fabricate:
To dimensions, profiles and details as shown.
2.2.3 All work shall be fabricated to be plumb, straight, square and level. Surfaces shall be
smooth, uniform and without any surface imperfections.
2.2.4 Adjacent panels, doors and similar surfaces shall align with the work of this Section
or with work by others where shown to align on Drawings.
2.2.5 Fabricate in the shop, leaving only fitting, assembly, installation and a minimum of
fabrication and finishing to be done at the building. Jointing of units shall be within
approved tolerances.
a) Mitre joints:
Joints shall be shop-mitred, by joining, splining and glueing to comply with
the requirements for the specified grade standards.
2.2.6 Use concealed fastenings for joining and assembling the work; where this is
impossible, the means of securing shall be placed in inconspicuous places and
methods of joining and assembling submitted for approval.
2.2.7 Mill all finish wood accurately to detail, with clean cut profiles and lines, machine and
hand sanded smooth, housed, jointed, blocked, put together in the best manner, with
provision for swelling and shrinkage and to assure the work shall remain in place
without warping, splitting or opening of joints.
2.2.8 Make all joints hairline tight, fitted accurately and joined with hardwood splines or
dowels, glued together or by other approved method. Use concealed screws, not
nails, for fastenings.
2.2.9 Gluing shall, where practicable, be by the hot plate press method and glued surfaces
shall be in close contact throughout.
2.2.10 Work which adjoins drywall, concrete, or other finish shall be fitted and scribed in a
careful manner and ample allowance shall be given for cutting and scribing.
2.2.11 Drawer sides and backs shall be 12 mm thick, unless noted otherwise, solid clear
selected hardwood, suitable for lacquer finish. Drawer bottoms shall be 6 mm thick
hardwood faced plywood, unless noted otherwise, suitable for lacquer finish.
2.2.12 All solid timber and veneer shall be within the approved range as exhibited by the
Control Samples as specified in CLEAR FINISHED TIMBER SAMPLES.
Particular care is necessary to ensure that all veneers are arranged in symmetrical
arrangements of equal sized pieces within each item. In order to satisfy this
requirement, it will be necessary to allow additional size in all pieces that are required
to be finally cut to produce finished work.
The width of veneers in all related fabrications shall be identical, and generally
between 100 and 300 mm wide. All surfaces shall have an even number of veneers
of equal or near equal widths unless a single veneer is sufficient. The veneer not
normally exposed to view in the finished work may be of a lower visual quality but
should match in species the face veneer.

Care shall be taken at all stages of collection, storage, fabrication and delivery to
ensure that timber is not subject to conditions that are likely to result in any change
in the moisture content.
2.2.13 Architectural woodwork scheduled to receive painted plastic laminate finish :
Tops, exposed sides, inside face of cabinets, dividers, shelves, fronts, doors and
drawers shall be of specified core construction with plastic laminate for painted plastic
laminate finish as indicated on Drawings. Cabinet backs and bottoms to be painted
plywood.
2.2.14 Install doors and drawers to fit openings properly and accurately aligned.
2.2.15 Cabinet doors and drawers shall be flush mounted. All hinges shall be concealed
and mortised.
2.2.16 Adjustable shelves in cabinets shall have chrome plated heavy duty standards and
pegs and let into sides. Shelf standards designed for 25 mm vertical spacing.
2.2.17 Fixed shelves shall be dadoed into sides, bottom and back. Cabinets to fit accurately
into indicated locations; mouldings permitted only where indicated on approved shop
drawings.
2.2.18 Counter tops, counters, counter fronts, shelves, etc., indicated on drawings to have
plastic laminate, shall have plastic laminate shop applied to 19 mm thick core
constructions, with plastic laminate backing sheet on underside or back of counter
tops, counters and shelves. Provide concealed wood framing to support plastic
laminate counters, securely fastened to wall and to underside of counters.
2.2.19 Work indicated on drawings to have plastic laminate, shall have plastic laminate shop
applied with tight seams. Plastic laminate shall be pressure laminated to core
construction with approved water resistant adhesive.
2.2.20 Ironmongery:
a) All items of finish ironmongery furnished under this Section shall be carefully
fitted and secured in place as part of the work of this Section. Locations and
positioning of ironmongery shall be subject to the Architect's approval. Care
shall be taken not to mar or damage ironmongery, or other work. Install
ironmongery plumb and true and fitted to assure noiseless operation.
Ironmongery for doors and drawers shall assure operation without forcing.
b) All edging strips and blocking pieces and rails shall be of adequate size to
accept all ironmongery specified and to ensure that fixing screws are driven
into one (1) thickness of timber only.
Lock/latch blocks shall be sized to permit mortise to be recut when
locks/latches are refitted during the lift of the door.
c) After preliminary fitting of ironmongery, the Contractor shall remove trim for
finishing work, after which he shall reinstall the ironmongery in a permanent
manner.
d) Upon completion of the work, before final acceptance by the Employer, the
Contractor shall in the presence of the Architect, show that all ironmongery
is in satisfactory working order; fit all keys in their respective locks and upon
acceptance of the work, shall tag and deliver all keys to the Employer.
e) All locks shall be master keyed to grand master on a facility basis. Mastering
to be separate from facility door mastering. Provide three complete sets of
keys to the Employer, upon completion.

2.3 Finishing
2.3.1 All work shall be shop finished unless otherwise stated. No site finishing will be
permitted, except minor retouching that is necessary after installation to leave work
in perfect condition. Site touch-up shall be accomplished using the same finishes as
originally applied at the shop, subject to the approval.
2.3.2 All finishes shall be free from runs, sags and other visual defects. All wood shall be
thoroughly hand smoothed and hand sanded to remove all traces of machine and tool
marks.
2.3.3 Requirements for surface preparation shall be in accordance with AWI Standards and
is specified for respective finish.
2.3.4 Opaque (Coloured) Lacquered Finish:
a) Apply coloured lacquered finish on exposed and semi-exposed surfaces.
Back prime all other surfaces.
b) General:
Clean all surfaces. Sandpaper all surfaces smooth with grain prior to
finishing. Finish by spray method.
c) Primer Coats:
2 coats lacquer primer. Sandpaper smooth each coat.
d) Spackle:
Fill all graining and pore depressions with suitable wood filler and sand
smooth.
e) Colour Coats:
At least 2 coats coloured lacquer, of colour as selected; hot or cold
applications; sandpaper smooth after each coat. In addition, after
sandpapering last coat, wet-sand all surfaces and rub smooth.
f) Wax coat:
Apply Carnauba Wax or approved equivalent and buff to provide a mirror
lustre.
2.3.5 Priming:
a) Woodwork of this Section indicated to be field painted shall be shop primed
with two coats of wood primer as specified.
i) Sandpaper smooth all surfaces, with grain prior to shop application
of primer.
ii) Apply two coats consisting of undercoat and primer.
b) Backprime interior painted woodwork on surfaces which will be concealed,
with two coats of wood primer. Schedule delivery to allow time for application
and drying of backprime coats before installation of woodwork.
3. EXECUTION
3.1 Preparation
3.1.1 Condition woodwork:
Average prevailing humidity conditions in installation areas prior to installing.

3.2 Installation
3.2.1 Install the Work plumb, level, true and straight with no distortions. Shim as required
using concealed shims. Install to a tolerance of 3mm in 2.5 metres plumb and level
(including countertops), and with 1.5mm maximum offset in flush adjoining surfaces,
1.5mm maximum offsets in revealed adjoining surfaces.
3.2.2 Provide all wood ground, blocking, nailers, furring and the like for work of this Section,
where shown and where required, dressed to the size indicated or required to suit the
condition. Install grounds, blocking, nailers, furring, etc., rigidly and in proper
alignment.
3.2.3 Provide all rough hardware, such as nails, screws, bolts, anchors, hangers, clips and
similar items. Hardware shall be of the proper size and kind to adequately secure the
work together and in place, in a rigid and substantial manner.
3.2.4 Connections and fastenings shall be made in such manner as will compensate for
swelling and shrinkage and as will permit the Work to remain permanently in place
without any splitting or opening of joints.
3.2.5 Secure woodwork to anchors or blocking built-in or directly attached to substrates.
Secure to grounds, stripping and blocking with countersunk, concealed fasteners and
blind nailing as required for a complete installation.
3.2.6 Scribe and cut work to fit adjoining work, and refinish cut surfaces or repair damaged
finish at cuts.
3.2.7 File Drawers, Cabinets and Countertops:
a) Install items of Work at locations shown on Drawings. Adjust for level and
position.
b) Adjust units and hardware so that doors and drawers operate smoothly and
with tolerances as established by Standards. Lubricate operating hardware
as recommended by manufacturer.
c) Coordinate work of this Section with work to be provided by others.
d) Install panels with joint between panels as detailed.
3.2.8 Install sinks, cooker hobs, cooker hoods, etc to the kitchen cabinets and counters in
accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Liaise with the suppliers to
obtain all necessary information to ensure proper fixing and fitting.
3.2.9 Co-ordinate with plumbing sub-contractor for all sink fittings and sanitary and gas
pipework and connections. Co-ordinate with electrical sub-contractor for all electrical
wiring and connections.
3.3 Clean-Up And Protection
3.3.1 Clean Up:
At regular intervals during the course of the work, all debris and excess material shall
be cleaned up and removed from the site. upon completion of installation, clean all
spaces of debris caused by woodwork installation.
3.3.2 Protection:
Protect all woodwork from marring, defacement or other damage until final completion
and acceptance of the project by the Employer. Repair or replace all defective units
prior to final inspection as directed . Any unit that cannot be satisfactorily repaired
shall be replaced with a new unit of same original design, at no additional cost to the
Employer.

3.4 Final Inspection
3.4.1 General
Prior to final inspection and acceptance of the Works by the Architect, the Contractor
shall check all items of the works to ensure that they are adjusted for proper
operations and to attend to all defects diligently from time to time.
3.4.2 Compliance
The Architect reserves the right to inspect any item of the Works at any time to
determine whether the Works are or have been performed or constructed in
accordance with this Specification, the Contract Documents and/or approved shop
drawings.
In the event such inspection determines that any of the Works do not comply with this
Specification or with the Contract Drawings and/or approved shop drawings, the
Contractor shall pay all costs of the initial inspection and subsequent re-inspections
and shall forthwith make good all of such works which do not comply at no additional
cost to the Employer.
The Architect shall be the sole judge as to the quality of acceptable workmanship.
The approval of shop drawings does not constitute approval of extra claims unless
highlighted in writing by the Contractor at the time of submitting the shop drawings.
