METAL DOORS AND FRAMES
1. GENERAL
1.1 Contract Documents
All Work of this Section shall comply with the requirements of the Contract Documents for
the Main Building Works, with the Drawings, Schedules and with all other Contract
Documents.
1.2 Work Included
1.2.1 Furnish metal / aluminium fire doors, frames and transom panels, to have same
rating as doors, having a fire resistance rating of half an hour to four hours at
locations indicated on the Drawings and Schedules.
1.2.2 Furnish metal acoustic doors, frames and transom panels at locations indicated
on the Drawings and Schedules.
1.2.3 Factory installed glazed vision panel in metal fire doors where indicated on the
Drawings.
1.2.4 Furnish hollow metal / aluminium doors and frames of types specified, including
framed hollow metal vision glazed panel openings.
1.2.5 Louvres and glazing openings in hollow metal doors.
1.2.6 Special facings to metal doors
1.2.7 Preparation of metal / aluminium doors and frames for installation of glazing,
ironmongery, weather - stripping, door seal gaskets, neoprene astragals,
adjustable seals, door bottom seals and wall mounted hinge side seals
1.2.8 Shop applied prime painting and site touch-up to match.
1.2.9 Shop drawings, certifications, samples, mock-ups and schedules as specified.
1.2.10 Coordinate the work of this Section with all other related trades and Sections.
1.2.11 Site welding of "Knock down" frames, as specified herein.

1.4 Quality Assurance
1.4.1 Manufacturing Requirements:
Metal / aluminium fire doors, hollow metal / aluminium doors and frames shall be
provided as complete units from a single manufacturer regularly engaged in the
production of such units.
1.4.2 Workmanship
a) Fabrication joints shall be flush, tight, and invisible.
b) Lines and moulded members shall be straight and true, arrises and angles
as sharp as practical for thickness involved, surfaces flat, fastenings
concealed.

1.4.3 Coordination
a) Provide coordination with Related Work Specified Elsewhere including the
requirements for submittals and installation of the metal fire doors, hollow
metal doors and frames.
b) It is the intent of this Work that the frame installation be coordinated with
construction sequences and frame anchorage shall be built into new
construction unless otherwise indicated in the documents.
1.4.4 Metal Work Design
a) The Contractor's particular attention is directed to the door sizes, gauges
of materials, frame profiles, gasket attachments, and the like., which may
be of custom design, and require special attention during fabrication
and/or during installation.
b) Gauges of material for doors and/or frames may be of a higher quality
than the minimum standards set for in SDI 100-83, acceptable to UL, BS,
or the Local Authorities, and shall be as specified herein.
1.4.5 Reference Documents
Refer to Section 01 02 10 Reference Standards to comply with the requirements
of the referenced Standards
1.5 Submittals
1.5.1 Shop Drawings:
Indicate door and frame elevations and sections, materials, gauges and finishes,
fabrication and erection details, location of ironmongery by dimension and
locations and details of glazed vision panels and louvres.
1.5.2 Door Schedule:
Submit a schedule of doors with information on door number, door type, door size,
type of frame, vision panel, louvres, indicating method of operation and the like.
1.5.3 Samples:
Submit three (3) samples for each of the followings:
a) Door : Full size section showing door construction.
Samples shall show glazed or louvred opening,
and the like where applicable.
b) Metal frame : Full size section of typical head and jamb corner
section showing welded corner construction,
anchorage, hinge, and the like.
c) Anchors : Each type appropriate to the wall or partition
construction.
d) Glazed view panels : Each type intended for use.
e) Louvres : Section of each type intended for use.
1.5.4 Submit fire test reports and Certificates of Compliance, ASTM, NFPA and/or UL,
or British Standards, as required for approval and use in Kingdom of Bahrain. All
door construction types and materials will be further subject to the review of the
Architect.
1.5.5 Special details, design and conditions shall be separately detailed and clearly
brought to the attention of the Architect for review prior to fabrication.
1.5.6 Submit Fire Door Certifcates upon completion of fire doors installation in
accordance with NFPA 5000 – Building Construction and Safety Code.

2. PRODUCTS
2.1 Acceptable Manufacturers:
2.1.1 Acceptable manufacturers, subject to compliance with specified requirement.
Other manufacturers providing similar and equal product will be given equal
consideration. Nevertheless, the fire-rated metal doors shall be supplied by an
approved company.

2.2 Materials
2.2.1 Ratings and Approvals:
a) Refer to "Quality Assurance" previously specified as identified in
Referenced Standards and Section 1.4 above.
b) All doors and frames supplied must bear labels of approval and
certification by local authorities, for the fire ratings specified herein.
2.2.2 Material:
Hot dip galvanised steel sheet meeting requirements of specified standards for
interior and exterior locations (stainless steel sheet for door cladding will be
acceptable where use of the material is a standard process of a particular
manufacture, and required to achieve the fire resistance rating).
For aluminium fire rated doors, the door leaf construction shall be formed from
1.2mm thick aluminium sheet on both sides for doors with nominal thickness of
42mm.
All external doors and frames shall be aluminium.
2.2.3 Finish:
One coat of zinc chromate factory applied primer, or other approved and suitable
priming coat. Provide chemical pre-treatment of zinc-coated or galvanised
surfaces for proper paint adhesion.
Aluminium doors and frames shall be in metallic powder coated finish (min. 60
microns thick), colours to be selected by Architect.
2.2.4 Door Construction:
a) Metal Fire Doors shall consist of fire resistant core material, with flush,
seamless steel sheet facing of gauge required to meet fire resistant rating
and the Local Fire Authority’s approval. Top and bottom of doors shall
have metal closure strip of same gauge as door faces.
b) Aluminium Fire Doors shall consist of incombustible light weight core with
a density of 335kg/m3 and reinforced with C-profiled steel stiffeners. Door
shall meet fire resistant rating and the Local Fire Authority’s approval shall
be tested to comply with NFPA 5000 - Building Construction and Safety
Code and/or BS 476 Part 22.
b) Fire doors shall have approved intumescent smoke seals.
c) Infill of honeycomb core (impregnated with phenolic resin) bonding both
panels by adhesive.
d) The hollow metal doors shall be full flush heavy duty, 45mm thick with
one-piece face panels; with interlocking seam on vertical edges only.
e) Face Sheet Minimum: 1.5mm thick steel (Provide heavier gauges where
required for UL, BS or Local Authorities' approval).

f) Core Insulation: Sound deaden and insulate entire core of all doors (full
height, width and thickness of door) with rigid inorganic honeycombed
core bonded to both faces.
g) Ironmongery Reinforcements
i) Mortise, reinforce, drill and tap doors at factory for fully templated
mortised ironmongery, in accordance with approved ironmongery
schedule and templates provided by the ironmongery suppliers.
ii) Minimum thicknesses for ironmongery reinforcing shall be as
follows:
For butt hinges, pivot hinges, 4.76mm steel plate. At least
stops, concealed overhead 150mm longer than butt at butt
holders, push and pulls, hinges. Provide tubular stiffener
and exit bolts. between reinforcing plates for
push and pulls.
For closers (concealed 4.76mm steel channel, at least
and surface mounted) 350mm long.
For lock face, latch face, 2.5mm sheet steel (interior
and flush bolts. doors), 2.8mm sheet steel
(exterior doors). Lock and
latch reinforcement at least
38mm x 75mm.
For all other surface- 2.5mm sheet steel
mounted ironmongery.
(Provide heavier gauges where required for UL, BS or local
building department approval.)
h) Door Louvres, where shown on the drawings, shall be provided as follows:
i) Stationary type, 1.6 mm sheet steel, closely spaced inverted "V"
blade design (or light proof type as indicated on Drawings), flush
with interior sides of face sheets of door, integral with welded to
door.
ii) Provide with 50% free area, unless indicated otherwise on
drawings.
iii) For doors indicated to have fire-resistive rating, provide louvres
of the automatically self-closing type with concealed fusible link,
lead weight, level mechanism and other working parts in metal
housing.
i) Glass Moulding and Stops: Fixed mouldings, 1.2mm minimum sheet
steel, integral with and welded to door. Loose stops, 1.2mm minimum
sheet steel, with mitred corners, on non-security side of door, secured to
framed opening with countersunk cadmium of zinc-coated Jackson head
machine screws uniformly spaced 225mm o.c. maximum.
j) Fire-rated doors with or without vision panels:
All fire-rated doors with or without vision panels shall be supplied by an
approved company having the fire-resistance rating as required and
constructed in strict compliance with specified standards. The Contractor
shall submit the manufacturer’s literature, technical data to the Architect
for approval.
k) Site Welding
i) The Contractor shall set up a properly equipped shop to perform
site welding of "knock down" frames.

ii) Welding shall include all mitres at face of jambs and head and
return bends at jambs and head.
iii) Perform all welding, grinding, filling and priming in accordance
with approved mock-up.
2.2.5 Frame Construction:
a) Pressed steel frames for fire doors shall be formed from not less than
1.5mm thick sheets, having a rebate depth of 19mm unless otherwise
shown on Drawings. All joints shall be welded without visible seams.
Fabricate as required to meet fire resistance rating.
b) Aluminium frames for aluminium fire doors shall be fromed from 1.8mm
thick aluminium extrusion with a rebate depth of 20mm. All visible corners
of the frame shall have a maximum radius of 0.5mm so as to achieve a
clean and sharp profile. The frames shall be complete with mortar boxes
in preparation for hinges, door closer and strike plate.
b) Frame for hollow metal doors shall be custom-made, shop welded type
for all exterior doors. Provide set-up arc welded, knock-down type for all
interior doors, all of which shall be site welded. All with integral trim,
formed to profiles and sizes shown on drawings. Grind welds smooth and
flush to provide invisible joint, for all exterior and interior doors.
c) Metal Gauge of Frames: 1.5mm thick minimum. (Provide heavier gauges
where required for UL, or BS or Local Authorities' approval.)
d) Floor Anchors: 2.0mm minimum, sheet steel, securely welded inside
each jamb.
e) Temporary Spreader: Provide removable temporary steel angle spreader
attached to feet of both jambs to serve as a brace during shipping and
handling.
f) Head Reinforcing: Reinforce heads of frames wider than 1050mm with,
2.5mm minimum , steel angles or channel, full width of frame; factory
welded inside frame. Reinforcing shall not act as lintel or load-carrying
member.
g) Ironmongery Reinforcements
i) Mortise, reinforce, drill and tap frames at the factory for fully
templated mortised ironmongery, in accordance with approved
ironmongery schedule and templates provided by the
ironmongery suppliers.
ii) Minimum thickness for ironmongery reinforcing shall be as
follows, unless heavier gauges are required for UL, BS or Local
Authorities' approvals.
For butt hinges and pivot hinges 4.76mm steel plate,
31mm
x 250mm minimum size.
For closers, overhead holders 4.76mm steel plate (on
and stops both sides of frame so

ironmongery
h) Door Stops: Minimum depth shall be 19mm. Provide holes in door stops
for silencers and install plastic plugs in silencer holes to keep holes clear
during installation. Provide black, rubber silencers, 3 per door leaf.
i) Mullions: Closed tubular shapes having no visible seams or joints, same
gauge as frame. Reinforce mullions bars as required or detailed with,
2.5mm minimum, steel channels, factory welded inside mullion.
j) Glass Mouldings and Stops: Fixed mouldings integrally formed as part of
frame. Loose stops, 1.2mm minimum sheet steel, with mitred corners.
k) Fire-rated door frames:
i) All fire-rated door frames shall be supplied by an approved
company having the fire-resistance rating as required and
constructed in strict compliance with the specified standards. The
Contractor shall submit the manufacturer’s literature and
technical data to the Architect for approval.

2.2.6 Frames Anchors


a) Provide 25 x 5mm thick tie straps with approved anchors welded to 6mm
diameter steel bracing for building into mortar joints and concrete to at
least 75mm depth or as shown on Drawings. Provide not less than five
anchors at each jamb and at spacings not exceeding 430mm vertically.
b) Provide an adjustable clip angle base anchor at the bottom of each jamb,
attached to floor with expansion bolt fasteners.
c) At in-place masonry or concrete walls the frame anchorage shall consist
of 9mm diameter countersunk flat head bolts in expansion shields spaced
150mm from top and bottom of frame and 430mm maximum on centres
in between.
2.2.7 Glazed Vision Panels:
a) Provide glazed vision panels in doors where indicated on the drawings.
b) Glazing shall be 6mm wire mesh pattern clear Georgian plate glass in
approved pattern, fitted to doors in steel frames, fabricated and fixed as
required. Glazed vision panel incorporated in fire doors shall be located
in compliance with specified standards.
c) Panels shall be fabricated in a manner to permit replacement of glass.
d) Panels for aluminium fire doors shall be designed such that the beading
for the vision panel shall be fully flush with the door face. The face that is
visible to be public shall have concealed beadings.
2.2.8 Preparation for Ironmongery:
a) Provide 4mm thick hinge reinforcement plates to the hinge jamb of door
frame so as to allow the proper installation of suitable approved hinges.
The hinge leaf is to be flush on the hinge jamb and door leaf so as to
minimize the door panel and frame gap. Hinges are to be screwed into
door and frame and not welded for easier maintenance and replacement.

b) Internally reinforce doors and frames as required for the support and
attachment of all other ironmongery which will be supplied under the
provisions of Section 08 80 00 - Hardware.
c) Provide mortar guards at ironmongery mortises in door frames.
d) Apply primer paint to all cut edges for ironmongery installations in doors
and frames.
NB All fasteners used - i.e. screws, nuts and bolts, including washers must
be compatible with the ironmongery specified (e.g. brass screws with
brass hinges, and the like.).
2.2.9 Door Closers:
Door closers used on side-hung fire doors shall be subject to the requirements
and pass the cyclic movement endurance test as described in specified standards.
2.3 Delivery, Storage and Handling
2.3.1 Deliver doors and frames in factory wrapped protective film and cartoned or
otherwise crated for easy handling and stacking.
2.3.2 Inspect the goods upon delivery for damage. Reject damaged items.
2.3.3 Store in a dry location and in vertical position. Provide appropriate storage racks
to prevent warpage and twisting of doors and frames.
2.3.4 Tag the doors and frames properly for identification and easy retrieval.
3. EXECUTION
3.1 Setting Frames
3.1.1 Install frames in strict accordance with the manufacturer's printed
recommendations and to achieve the required fire rating.
3.1.2 Set frames in position prior to beginning partition work. Brace frames temporarily
until permanent anchors are set. The manufacturer must have the Local Fire
Authority’s approvals for dry wall applications.
3.1.3 Install base anchors at the bottoms of frames.
3.1.4 Set jamb anchors as masonry work progresses. Install an anchor at each hinge
and strike location and within 150mm of the top and bottom of each jamb.
3.1.5 Pressure grout door frames fully and solidly with approved grouting compound.
3.1.6 When necessary to install frames in prepared openings in concrete or masonry
wall construction, attach with hairpin anchors, threaded anchors or expansion
anchors. In such cases, the frames shall be fully pressure grouted through
suitable access holes in the adjoining wall construction, all in accordance with
specified standards.
3.1.7 Provide temporary claddings around the installed door frames to protect against
physical and chemical damage during adjacent construction activities.
3.2 Door Installation
3.2.1 Install doors in strict accordance with the manufacturer's printed
recommendations. Fire-rated doors shall be installed in strict compliance with
specified standards and fixed as in the tested prototypes to achieve the required
fire rating.

3.2.2 Install doors in their respective frames, by attaching to hinges in place at the jamb
frame members. As far as possible, install doors only after all construction works
to adjacent walls and floors are completed. Fire door identification tags with
required information in accordance with specified standards and permanent
protection shall be firmly fixed to the trailing edge of the hinge stile of the door leaf
and the jamb of the door frame.
3.2.3 Install all other ironmongery such as lock or latch sets, closers, panic exit devices,
metal thresholds and the like, and specified in Section 08 70 00 - Ironmongery.
3.2.4 Adjust all ironmongery and doors according to the following:
a) Door & Frame Gap not more than 3mm
b) Door & Floor Clearance not less than 3mm and not more than
10mm
c) Door Closing Force frictional force required:
a) to move the door leaf from fully closed
position to the fully open position and
b) to bring the door leaf to the fully
latched condition shall be not more than 20N
3.2.5 Completion:
a) Remove all surplus grout and point joint between frame and wall
construction as shown in Drawings.
b) Touch up all abraded surfaces with priming paint to match factory applied
priming coat.
c) Clean all surfaces of doors and frames for the application of finish painting
which will be performed under the provisions of Section 09 80 00 -
Painting.
d) Leave all items of ironmongery oiled and properly adjusted.
