Linux distributions that you can use on your older PC.

It's FOSS
While our focus is on older computers, you can also use most of these
lightweight Linux on relatively new hardware. This will give you a better
performance if you use your computer for resource-heavy usage such as video
editing on Linux.

Let’s see which lightweight Linux distro you should use.

Best Lightweight Linux distros for old laptops and desktops

I’ll try to order the list in decreasing order of hardware requirement. Which
means the lightweight Linux distro at the number one position would need the
minimum hardware.

Peppermint is a cloud-focused Linux distribution (https://itsfoss.com/cloud-

focused-linux-distros/) that doesn’t need high-end hardware. It is based on
Ubuntu and uses LXDE desktop environment to give you a smoother
experience.

Originally created with the web-centric approach of netbooks in mind,

Peppermint has developed ICE application (https://peppermintos.com/guide
/ice/) for integrating any website as a desktop app.

It also has a decent getting started guide (https://peppermintos.com/guide/) to

help the new users. A dedicated forum (https://forum.peppermintos.com/) is
also there to help troubleshooting issues and answering your questions.

As the name suggests Linux Lite is a lightweight Linux distro that does not need
high-end hardware to run it. Even a beginner will be able to use it on older
computers easily. Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu LTS (Long Term
Support) releases. The LTS version gives support for 5 years which means once
you install Linux Lite on your computer, it should provide updates for 5 years.

Linux Lite Team says: “ Linux Lite is fully functional out of the box, this means
that you won’t have to install extra software when you boot your computer for
the first time.”   This is pretty helpful for newbies as they don’t need to go for
some basic apps search to install. Most of the basic apps are built in with OS.

Some of the pre-installed apps are Firefox for web browsing, Thunderbird for
emails, Dropbox for Cloud storage, VLC Media Player for Music, LibreOffice for
office, Gimp for image editing and Lite tweaks to tweak your desktop.

Considering that it is an official Ubuntu flavor, you’ll have plenty of support and
resources online.

The good thing is that there are many tutorials or guides provided by the team
itself to help new users. Also, you will need to do a little research about the
applications you want to install on very tiny distributions. Prefer the
application that uses fewer system resources and has a simple user interface. If
you maintain the installations then there will be no problem using any of the
light Linux distro listed above.

Every newbie reading here should follow the advise of this list, based
on their equipment specs. There’s other Linux Distros out there, but
once you become familiar with Linux OS’s (Distros) you’ll realize that
they are minor variations of one another, especially if you adhere to
long-term support (LTS) Ubuntu or its derivatives. Most really old
equipment is 32-bit; in 2003, 64-bit CPUs were introduced to the
(formerly 32-bit) mainstream PC market, but it wasn’t until about 07
before so many laptops were 64-bit. There are limits to 32-bit Distros
(e.g. Chrome browser no longer supports 32-bit, but Chromium still
does, and better than others common on Linux).

My 2009 Asus 32-bit netbook (Google: Asus eee pc 1015pem specs)

has the Intel Atom N550 (Dual Core; 1.5GHz) Processor, which was

processor is what makes any computer fast or not, especially under

heavy loads. It's FOSS

On the 1015pem, I purchased the max 2G of RAM on day-one (yet

another limitation of 32-bit), and in 2016 I replaced the HDD w/a
(2.5″) SSD, loaded Peppermint 32-bit onto it, and it does pretty well. I
purged Firefox, VLC, and a few others, and then (sudo apt-get install)
installed chromium-browser, then handbrake, then xfburn & xplayer.
For the rest I use the browser; after all, it’s a laptop (a portable); not
a PC.

Peppermint, Lubuntu and Linux Lite (32-bit) have long-term support,

which is important for many reasons; research it for yourself. The
very first Linux OS I installed is long gone now. Thus, I stick with LTS
Ubuntu derivatives; they’re all similar to use, run the same programs,
and install the same way. My NUC-PC currently runs Linux Mint 19-C,
and nicely! Finally, there’s another ultra-lite not mentioned here; the
fairly new Phoenix OS is a copycat of the Chrome OS (e.g.
Chromebooks & Boxes); it’s cloud-centric.

So after I tried Bodhi I discovered that even though Midori is

capable to do everything the latest browsers do, google
refuses to believe it is Firefox or Chrome despite that I
identified it as such (must be Chrome, Firefox, or Opera). So
that’s a problem. Fortunately, the Bodhi AppCenter is
bonehead easy to use and it installed the latest Firefox or
Chrome, so I did that and Firefox worked.

I do worry that being a low spec machine that these latest

version browsers will become pigs. I wish there was a solution
