UNFICYP- Solving Conflict Between Greek and Turkish Cypriots

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus(UNFICYP) is one of the longest-

running UN peacekeeping missions. UNFICYP was set up in 1964 trying to avert continued

friction between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot gatherings on the island and come back

to typical settings. In 1974, after an overthrow by components favoring association with Greece

and an ensuing military mediation by Turkey, the Mission's duties extended. (About UNFICYP)

After the Turkish invasion in 1974, Southern Cyprus received substantial endowments

from the worldwide network, while its Northern counterpart received aid from Turkey, causing

less monetary advancement contrasted with the South. The economic embargo set on Northern

Cyprus keeps the improvement of income and the acquiring of outside capital essentially

impossible.

Since the accepted truce in August 1974, UNFICYP has regulated the truce lines; given

helpful humanitarian assistance; and kept up a buffer zone between the Turkish Cypriot powers

in the north and the Greek Cypriot powers in the south. (About UNFICYP) UNFICYP's Chief of

Mission likewise fills in as the Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus and in that

limit drives endeavors to help the gatherings in achieving an extensive settlement. The truce lines

reach out more than 180 kilometers over the island. Without a formal truce understanding,

UNFICYP's 850 or more troops and 60 or more police officers manage several incidents every

year. (About UNFICYP)

UNFICYP underpins the fullest conceivable resumption of ordinary citizen action in the

buffer zone, remembering this is as yet a territory under lasting armed watch by military on each

side. To this end, it encourages the resumption of farming in the buffer zone where safe, and

helps the two communities on issues identified with the supply of power and water over the

lines.

Endeavors to unravel the Cyprus strife and reunify the island have so far been without

result, in spite of the fact that relations among north and south have enhanced throughout the

years. In addition to other things, in April of 2008, this prompted the opening of a few

intersection openings over the buffer zone, most prominently crosswise over Ledra Street in old

Nicosia. As of 2017, there have been plentiful diplomatic efforts to improve different methods of

peace since the beginning of the Cyprus problem.

The division that is still found today is a result of not having come to a settlement

between the Greek and Turkish sides of Cyprus. Yet the difficulty derives from the political

aspect of the division, as many of the Greek and Turkish Cypriots have mutual care for all

Cypriots, being able to bond together.

Through the many years of the division, there has been much speculation as to what

could potentially solve the conflict between the Greek and Turkish on the island, one of the more

popular ideas being the separation of the two, creating two sovereign national governments

which had been pushed by the Clinton Administration. (Bandow)

Despite the fact that there isn't presently an arrangement to end the division in Cyprus,

the option of UN mediation to help lift the financial bar on Northern Cyprus by assuming control

over the organization of its ports and air terminals, enabling merchandise to be sent out without a

Turkish Cypriot Customs stamp. This could maintain a strategic distance from an emergency in

Turkish EU participation talks and help the political atmosphere in Cyprus.

UNFICYP 4

Many view Northern Cyprus as the instigator in the conflict, as their people voted to

launch themselves into the EU, which the Greek Cypriots (Southern Cyprus) rejected as they had

already been guaranteed a place in the EU. This isolated Northern Cyprus, creating a reliance on

trade with Turkey and tourism.

Can an agreement ever be reached between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots? As of right

now, there will not be a deal on reunification. There might be the requirement for bigger

estimates, for example, lifting economic bars on Northern Cyprus as expressed above, alongside

the likelihood of making two sovereign countries of the two Cypriot people group, which makes

an arrangement that the two sides may concur upon.
